Blueant Q2 headset and my Evo

OK, you guys sold me. Taking the Jabra Extreme back to Best Buy and ordered the Q2 off the website using the code "colony." I drive a Mini Convertible, and it would be great to be able to use it with the top down... I've not found a headset that will work so far doing that.

haha, me too! I just bought a Plantronic 510 from Amazon.com, but it's too bulky! I love the idea to have AD2P and listen to music while wearing the headset. Thanks to the code, I just ordered one for $99 with $4 shipping!

Can't wait!

but, the Q2 app won't have anything UNIQUE, that you cant get elsewhere, correct?

I mean, once the phone is paired, its paired, and, the manual is online, and comes with the unit, right?

Its useless to clutter up your phone with Apps that have no unique attributes, don't you agree?

wase4711,
This comes down to personal preference, if you want the information on your phone then install the app once it's ready, if not then the manual is available online.

Had Q2 and returned it... twice!

I got the Q2 on July 31st, and had nothing but problems maintaining a connection to my Moto Droid. I was rooted with BB v 0.4 at the time and thought that could of been the issue. So I reverted back to stock Froyo 2.2, and still the problems occurred. I even thought the issue might be my venerable Droid, so I tested it out on my friend's D2... still the same problem.

I then exchanged my Q2 (thinking it could of been faulty) for another one at AT&T. Still the same issues arise. Not to mention that the anti-wind tech wasn't working all that well with both devices.
Blue Ant states that this tech can withstand winds up to 22mph. But the winds that I encountered were no more than 10mph. at the most.

Don't get me wrong... I truly love this device (clarity, form, fit, ease of use... ), but was rather disappointed in the connection/wind noise issues I was having. So I returned it.

I have been an avid Blue Ant user since the Z9 first came on the scene, and have used the following:Z9, Z9i, and V1 with outstanding results. I even gave the T1 a shot, but was rather disappointed in the cheesy ear gels that came with it.... they just sucked at keeping the T1 in the ear.

I'm hoping that in the very near future a firmware update will be available to fix the problems that I was having with the Q2.
And hopefully by that time there will be other brick and mortar providers selling this device (had a really bad experience with the two AT&T stores I went to... bad people skills and customer service in a big way).

Just a quick question though.... are there any Moto Droid owners out there with a Q2 having the same issues like me, or was my experience just a fluke?

Guys, I can't thank you enough for this thread. I bought an Icon and am having lots of problems with it. I thought it would be near perfect because I had my other Jawbone for 3plus years.

I really just needed to upgrade to something that did A2DP. I'm now going to do some searching on this Q2 headset

I think someone else mentioned this, but the icon has a web app you can download that will let you get a2dp as well as a bunch of custom features. YOu can also change the voice you hear. I just tried it and a2dp works flawlessly and as an added bonus, I can connect MUCh easier with my evo 4g now. Q2 may be a better headset (never tried) but probably worth the 5 minute software upgrade on the icon before you give up on it.

I'm sorry to say that my Q2 came today and it's going back. It has difficulty staying connected to my Evo (really annoying) and any wifi signal totally knocks it off and makes any podcast I'm playing stutter badly. The volume controls sometimes work, sometimes don't, and the ear gels are all uncomfortable.

I have a much cheaper and lighter (and smaller) Jabra Extreme to compare it to. The Jabra maintains a connection perfectly, the volume controls are less fiddly, though none of the cool voice commands that lose their cool in a few hours (at least they did for me).

What was more astounding to me was that the Q2 had a shrill treble sound with little bass, and the Jabra sounds way better to my ears.

Glad I bought from Blueant, and they have a 30-day return policy. Hoping they honor it. I'm keepign the Jabra Extreme and will be satisfied with it.

After some more testing, I have come to the conclusion that there is a very weak Bluetooth antenna in the Q2 when compared to other devices. When holding my hand over the top of my Evo, the Q2 disconnects, but the other Bluetooth devices I have continue to work. Simply putting the Evo in my pocket causes stuttering or disconnection when I sit down. Not good.

I am going to give tech support a try to see if they have a solution, but otherwise, this nice device is going back.

unfortunately, I am experience the same thing on my new Q2. I received it on Friday, after 3 days of testing, reset, pair, unpair the device, I think I will give up on this device.

My problem is with A2DP audio streaming. The good part about this headset is the audio quality, it's the best I have heard on any bluetooth device, but the breakup and disconnect is very annoying. I can hold it in my hand, put in pants pocket, even shirt pocket, the audio streaming will breakup every 10-20sec. It's very short, but very annoying.

The bluetooth phone portion seems to be fine, not suffering from the audio streaming breakup. Like Cubfan said, it's probably weak bluetooth antenna or something.. I can hold my hand over the bluetooth headset, and it will disconnect the audio streaming instantly.

Maybe I'll try Q3 in the future :)

Btw, the update software is very buggy. I tried it on my Win7 32-bit, not working. Tried it on one of my WinXP 32-bit laptop, had trouble installing driver and software crashed. Finally tried it on my WinXP 32-bit desktop, and it works just ok. The software would crash when checking online for update, and then I have to restart the software at least 3 times. The latest version is 1.1 (I reflashed and didn't fix the above stream problem).

I'm having the same problem with my evo. I used it today for a prolonged period, for the first time. After working perfectly for the first part of the day, the Q2 began disconnecting and reconnecting. It would do this continually, even after I turned off the bluetooth and turned it back on and unpaired and re-paired the device. I even reset the phone. In addition, it kills my wifi. I wasn't able to use the wifi in my house while on the Q2.

It's a shame I really enjoyed using it, when it works it's the best bluetooth headset that I've had.

So basically, what you good people are saying is that the Q2 is the master of voice quality and the Icon is the master of noise management. Both have some issues with Froyo,... notably, stable connectivity with the Q2. BlueAnt's software doesn't work or isn't stable in the latest windows environment, and Jawbone's software isn't even out of Beta yet and hit-or-miss when it comes to availability. Both are about equal when comes to comfort, with a slight edge to the Q2,... about the same outcome with style. Both A2DP! About sums it up?

So I guess it comes down to what's most important,... good sound on the user's end, or good sound on the receiving end (the person you're talking to). On the surface, that decision seems simply, but in reality, a little complicated. By the end of the day, I'm landing on one of these two!

Wifi does seem to affect this device terribly. If you hit a strong wifi signal anywhere it will disconnect. Tried emailing support and got no response. Guess I have to call to return this thing.

But other than that,... you'd give it a nods up? You have any experience with the Icon?

FYI, Blueant customer svc sucks. I've been trying to contact them 3 times already, and not successful. All I want to do is get an RMA, but the tech support line keep saying "Thank you for your patient, an agent will be with you as soon as possible." Each time I waited about 30min, but no one answer the phone. Due to other task, I had to hang up and try again.

I also tried their sales dept, which answers right away (imagine that?), and she said they cannot issue RMA, and has to be done via Tech Support line.

I just hope I can get through today, and get my RMA and send the item back... geesh!!

2:00pmcst - Finally got through, talked to Les from customer support. Requested RMA refund, will get an email in 2-3 days. If not, call them back.

Nope, but I'm using the Jabra Extreme, which is much smaller and quite good. I almost took it back to Best Buy when I ordered the Q2, and now I'm glad I didn't.

Looks like it will be a chore to return this. What fun.

strange, I get almost no break ups of streaming music using my HTC EVO; occasionally, for some reason, when I am NOT streaming music, the headset says its "disconnected", then immediately is reconnected, but that doesnt happen often.
what many of you are forgetting is that this is a WIRELESS BLUETOOTH device, NOT a wired one, and, there will be occasions, where EVERY wireless device will stutter or disconnect, due to all the ambient wireless/bluetooth/3g/4g/etc. signals we are bombarded with every where is our houses, our cars, and outside..
I guess the trick is to find a device that does this as little as possible, but, after at least 20 BT headsets, I am yet to find that device..
The Jawbone ICON was close, but the sound just isn't up to par with the Q2, so I will deal with the occasional drop offs when streaming audio, which is more than made up for by the strong call quality and the BING 411 feature, which is way cool.
When I want to listen to music, through a headset, it ALWAYS better to use a wired headset, without question...

Now see,... the first half of this thread talked about the Q2 like the second coming of the Lord. Somewhere around the middle it kinda balanced itself,... now the last couple posts are forcing me into re-think mode.

Well, it's 5:14 my time here, and in 16 minutes, I'm outta here and headed for the store. Luckily, there's an AT&T shop not far from the Best Buy. At least I'll get a chance to eyeball both, doubt if I buy either tonite,... not paying 99 for the Icon. They have them on line for 79 new in retail packaging and 59 in OEM form. Not paying 129 for the Q2 when I can get it for 99. But I will decide this evening.

I don't mean to argue with you since you're wanting to forgive this device for its shortcomings. Still, I have two similar devices that I'm able to compare.

I have 3 places in my neighborhood where the Q2 disconnects every time. The Jabra Extreme does not even stutter. If I cup my hand over the top of my Evo, the Q2 loses connection every time, but the Jabra keeps going strong. If I cup my hand over my ear, the Q2 loses connection, but not the Jabra. My strong wifi at work causes the Jabra to stutter slightly until it seems to adjust, but the Q2 disconnects and I can't reestablish connection with it until I'm at my desk.

Now, I'm no expert, but I'm not willing to live with the shortcomings of a device that costs twice as much as one that works properly. And the sound quality is not dramatically different. Noise cancellation seems to be about the same, too.

As for the Bing feature, I simply set up my Evo with Choice Dialer Plus Free. Now when I press the button on the Jabra, I say "Bing" and it dials the same number that the Q2 does. I can say "Google" and it dials Google-411. And the voice dialing works great, though it does not announce callers' names (the only feature I sorta miss on the Q2).

So if you're willing to live with some of these issues, go for it. Otherwise, do what I did and settle on something closer to flawless. For that money, it should do much better, IMO.

Hey, you're a cubfan; its your nature to argue..

Anyways, I just tried your two tests on my EVO; cupping my hand over the top of the EVO did NOT disconnect the headset; cupping my hand over my Q2 on my ear did cause the signal to drop, but really, who cups their hand over their headset when its on their ear?

I had a jabra extreme when they first came out, and couldnt get it to fit right in my ear..

And, the announcing of the incoming caller by name is a really strong feature, for me; are there any other headsets that do this that you know of?
Life is a series of trade-offs, and, for now, I still haven't found a PERFECT headset that has all these features, and NO downsides...
The Jawbone icon was close, but poor sound quality, and no name announcing was enough for me to send it to ebay..

Newegg has the Jawbone Icon:The Thinker OEM for $48.99 right now (free ship).
Maybe that will sway some of you..
