Bottom Button Light Leak?

This is how mine look I had to actually angle it for it to show, just like you I would not have noticed if I did not go looking for it, here is a pic of the menu home and other keys dim and also the light leakage, the way I angled it make it look worse than it is, was going to take it back but after hearing all these problems mine is light work..I mean that literally smh lol

Everyone is going to have a light leak at extreme angles, that is the way LED's are. LED tv's do the same thing, the home and menu button look fine honestly. The bigger problems are the people who have light leaking between the soft keys and the plastic spacer. There are holes, and in the dark it looks like someone took a pin and jammed it b/w the softkeys and the spacer and now light comes out.

Thank you for explaining to me Im so new to all of this never experienced any type of light problems and when you say soft keys exactly what do you mean sorry for being such a noob, I see like a lil hole in the dark but its very tiny maybe im being completely anal because if it wasn't pointed out I would not have noticed. And your right i feel sorry for all the people with major probs with this phone, so sad to spend all of this money and on top of it wait forever not "for your dream phone but the one after" smh and to go through this.

My first tbolt had light leaks under the back button but my replacement doesn't.

Sent from my Thunderbolt.

Ya thats exactly how it was on my first one.. Ugh. Now I am cursed with dust under the screen, seriously get it together htc :(

There is a picture in the first page of this thread i think

I have it too but dont notice it when I am looking at it straight. I have to tilt it a little to notice it leaking under the bottom, but its not as bad as the picture someone posted. It is only visible at a certain angle. I am not too bothered by it. I love the phone otherwise.

After reading all of this, and seeing the light leakage on the phone myself, I am not really concerned for the most part, probably because now I know mine isn't especially faulty.

Actually, if the light "dots" in between the bottom of the screen and the plastic were more symmetrical, I think it would look cool. I really don't like that the home and menu buttons are half-lit, though.

Funny, cause it took me over a half hour to put on the screen protector just the way i wanted. Now my pickiness rears it ugly head again.

I'll just let it go

Just wanted to update my minor light leak issue. Thanks to Cory linking to this thread, I decided to try the black silicone fix. it worked like a charm for me. :)

I went to AutoZone and got a tiny tube of Permatex Ultra Black Gasket Silicone. I then got a toothpick and a slightly damp paper towel and sat down under a bright light. Put a small dab of the silicone on a paper plate and then ever so slightly dipped the very tip of the toothpick in the silicone and then kinda twisted it as I brought it out. This caused a tiny little string of silicone to hang from the toothpick which I then laid in the crack where the glass meets the frame. I did this repeatedly, constantly getting up and going into a dark room to check my results. then I would wipe any excess with the damp paper towel. Now I cannot see ANY light leak :) Cannot tell I did ANYTHING at all...literally invisible that I added silicone in there.. If you want to try this just take your time and remember less is more.:)

It wasn't the light leak that bothered me, it was the threat of any easy way for dust to make it under the screen. Now I feel a little more comfortable pocketing this device. Dust might still get under there someday, but it won't be from that area that it gets it. :)

Thanks for the link Cory!!!:):)

Went to my local VZW to get some accessories and explained the few issues such as light leakage and to my surprise they offered an exchange without me even asking so I figured why not? Well TB #2 still has the poorly lit buttons plus two little lines of light above the buttons just before the display area. Definitely better off with TB #1 lol. At this point I don't know what to do. I kinda feel like when were picky we end up with worse replacements and how many brand new devices can we return without feeling a little guilty that were acting a bit spoiled. On the other hand, I am picky, I am spoiled and I want a pristine TB for my $250. I also think it may be best to get a replacement in a month or so when us early adapters all have all the faulty units and the second and third batches start hitting shelves.

Great post! this is why I chose to keep my little light leaks because what I noticed that others are going through when they switch is worse, and yes Im pick ocd- ish lol but this time I will stay with door #1 lol.

Lol, thanks. From the look of things it seems a lot of us are having the exact same issues so replacements are unlikely to be 100% free of any trouble. If you look on the AC homepage right now there's an article about TB problems and solutions and in the image you'll notice there unit has crappy buttons too. I did call CS just to get my issues documented incase I have bigger problems down the road and the rep insists I return this one. I doubt the store will allow me to open a new one, check it out and if there is still problems, let me open yet another one so I think I'm gonna leave well enough alone for now and roll the dice. Plus I already installed a screen protector and it came out perfect which never happens.

Yea Im just working through battery issues that are getting better so Ill deal with the rest. Not as bad as it seems. :)

I was just in my pitch black bedroom and boy is this light leak noticeable. Not only do I have the same leakage as everyone else but the left hand corner of the display is separated from the housing. My EVO was is 100% mint, I mean mint condition when I sold it for the TB, I am feeling sad.... Very very sad. Also beginning to notice a pinkish hue while viewing pics and webpages. I remember one time with my first EVO there was a very slight yellow tint to the screen and after 2/3 charging cycles it completely disappeared. As if the warming of the display from being on the charger sort of cured the adhesive or something. Here's to hoping the pink hue does the same. Also this should be noted guys, 2 reps said the policy on returns had gotten more strict and if you exchange yours for something such as the poorly lit buttons, the tech who eventually evaluates the unit may determine it to be in proper working order and you'll be charged "up to full retail". I doubt that'll happen but the $35/75 restocking fee might. I'm leaning towards keeping this one but instead of the cs reps giving me a hard time there actually recommending exchanging till satisfied so I'm really on the fence.

I have it too! Very minute, gotta look for it.

And if you look top down you see light shining from it, you don't notice it when using normally though.

The problem with the lighting on the screen at the bottom is that it bleeds onto a dark screen. I can see 2 light leaks on the bottom of my screen while I have a dark image up, and its really distracting.

Don't have a light leak but the light is less than consistent on the bottom buttons. Not enough to complain about though.

I have the leakage but in my case it seems like the bottom right of the glass has become separated from the phone. If I push down the leakage goes away, but the glass doesn't stay down for long.

My wife and I bought two TBs on launch day and hers is perfect. I don't see why I should accept what is obviously a manufacturing defect and a possible cause of future problems. I could wait until it becomes a real problem, or I can have it taken care of now. I don't know if it costs Verizon anything other than processing costs to return defective units to HTC, but I would think keeping a subscriber happy is more important to them. I've gotten nothing but great service from them in the 12 months I've been with them, including a replacement Droid 1 that had unresponsive buttons 6 months in. I'm headed over to the store tomorrow and see what they say.

The EVO did have this issue too , it also shipped with bad SD cards. It's just one of those things. Many people here in the forums refuse to purchase the first batch of handsets and wait while us early adapters make these problems know and they get corrected. Personally, I would rather have a slightly defective unit and do an exchange it a month it so rather than not having one at all. The days of manually carrying over data ate gone so its no big deal to swap handsets later on. I generally do feel bad though because someone is getting screwed. If light leak is really the only issue than we are wasting major dollars by returning countless units. Again though, we should get what we pay for and in this case $250 is $50 more than average. I still can't understand the bump in price but I guess if there not taking on any premium data fees , than a $50 one payment is better than the $10 you'll pay every single month for ANY smartphone on Sprint(some exceptions but basically every smartphone).

I think most would agree that at this point the light leak is annoying cosmetically but the real concern is dust and other debris getting under the display down the road. The rep on the phone last night did say if they ship another one I can simply send back whichever look to be in better shape. So the gamble of getting a worse off phone is now eliminated but still it feels wrong to blow through 3 in 3 days. Even wasting all the packaging and paperwork leaves a bad taste in my mouth plus if you read my posts in the EVO forums, my account went south because of a replacement that wasnt returned and processed on time which totally knocked my account out if whack ever since.

Hey this is totally off topic but since your Sig says you own the TB and Inspire, I have a question. With both sitting next to each other does it look like a screen protector for the Inspire will fit the TBolt? My local radio shack has a zagg for the Inspire that's been opened but never purchase, they'll give it to me for $7. Before everyone says just buy it for that price, money is not the issue I'd just prefer not to pack up my 15 month old daughter and drive over there for no reason.
