Bottom Button Light Leak?

UPDATE: Walked into the Verizon store, showed it to the sales Rep. Rep says "yup, that ain't right". He walked it over to a manager. Manager stuck his fingernail between the glass and the body and said "yup, that ain't right. DOA it." Walked out with a new TB. So far this one doesn't have that problem.

I did notice the leakage when looking down at an angle. I can see the two lights. But those lights are showing through the glass. There is no gap. My problem was I had a gap on the bottom of the glass, which you could see light leakage when looking from the bottom up. That was the glass not adhering to the body.

Anyways, can't wait to root and do a nandroid backup. Resetting the phone up again is a pita!

Well if anyone is still follow along here's my final report.
To recap first, TB #1 order from Tele sales and had light leakage. Returned in store.
TB #2 even worse light leakage plus display was separated from housing. Returned in store with managers approval needed. Cool guy but thought I was being a bit picky.
Got home with TB #3 and realized this one was worst of the bunch and sales rep also managed to put a severe scratch on the display with his long a$$ finger nails.

At this point I'm ready to cry lol. Called cs and explained the situation and was accused of scratching the device and looking for a new one. Now the guys at the store were very cool and technically did me a favor in the first place because all damaged phones need to be deemed replaceable by a tech which this location doesn't have. They could have easily sent me packing and I would have been forced to go to a repair center. I really didn't want to go back in there store but CS refused to ship out another phone without a techs approval.

I decided to go back and close the line, get a refund and simply re open a new line and but a new TB, instead of asking them to open yet another device plus they would get a sale out of the deal. Turned out the manager was super, super cool and while he still thought I wad being a tad picky, looked at it and agreed it really is a cause for concern and allowed me to get a new one rather than closing the line and re opening. He easily could have made a sale but I would have lost my number.

TB #4 has absolutely no problems besides those 2 pin holes we all seem to have under the buttons. Any second thoughts I was having were replaced by the gratitude I have for the stores reps treating me with such professionalism. I called CS and gave them the names of the employees and the stores location just to give some positive feedback because its a brand new store and they're taking very good care of customers. As for the few reps over the phone who gave me a hard time, I guess in they're eyes 3 brands new phones all with the same issue probably seemed impossible so I can't really blame them.

Glad you got it figured out. Are the home and menu soft keys still partially lit like on other phones?

LOL you think thats bad? take a look at what some of the early Evos looked like. Gotta love HTC quality!

So already went into the store on the 18th and went through my initial phone and 3 others before I thought I had walked out with working version. Now after taking really close look I have light leaking out of bottom left edge of the glass and one point directly under the right side of home button SIGH.

Is this just a large scale issue do I even bother having to resetup my phone againd and probably have same light leaking issue? See few people have got phone with nothing coming out far as the light leak but after 5 phones and power buttons not pressing down properly I'm to say the least questioning if I need to wait out a updated version of the device?

I would say its normal. As long as it doesn’t look like that Evo or the OP photo I would call it good. I have it but I have to hold the phone horizontal at eye lvl to see it from the side of the phone. Just chalk it up to manufacturing. This seems to be a thing in the design of the Evo-like phones. I wouldnt stress about it unless you are looking at the phone head on and see light.

I just did the silicone fix, it worked like a charm :D don't bother exchanging your TB, they all have the same issue, I've been through three already. +1 on the silicone, if I can do it anyone can do it

Hello Guy,

I’m new to the forum and the Thunderbolt is also my first Android device. I have been following this thread. I am one of the people who have the light leak, which seems to be quite common on this device. I know about the front leak you are all talking about but how about if you look down on your phone from top to bottom? Do you see the 2 led's back there? Below are 2 pictures. I would have never thought to hold my phone like that to look until I started reading this stuff lol. Are these normal? I’m actually more curious about the 2nd picture. The front leak I know how to fix (thanks to a member on a previous page)

Picture 1 (front view). It is just a tiny leak on the right and barely a dot of light more to the left if you can possibly see it. Not bad at all

Picture 2 (top view) if you hold this thing and look extremely down on it, you can see the led’s behind the screen but is that normal for all of you? You cannot see these with normal viewing. no leak or anything just if you look over the top. I just wanted to know if that is normal on all of them. Id appreciate any input.

Thanks for any input in advance

I always thought that was a moto only issue....I can't stand light leaks. Got used to it with my X....

The second one is normal. Every TB has them.

Thanks a lot for responding so quickly. Like I mentioned, I'm new to this stuff and feel better if it is the norm ya know.

Thanks again!

The store rep that I spoke to said it was "normal" since the display phones did this...

Im going to the store I bought it at tomorrow...

Here is HTC's response to me asking why I had to go through 1 phone by mail and 4 in store that all same issue and what they had heard about this "Light leaking" issue.

I understand your Thunderbolt has light leakage appearing from the bottom of your device and you had a few checked at Verizon and those devices had it as well. This has not become a known issue as of yet. This is the first I have heard about. For it to become a known issue we do have to have a lot of calls and emails to come in about a particular problem and then we look into further. At this time, the best thing to do is exchange your device with Verizon again or you may send your device in to HTC Repair. If you choose to have the device repaired you may do so by calling 1-800-229-1235 (8:30 AM - 5 PM EST M-F).
Sincerely,

Lisa
