Bought the LapDock!

Re: Will the Lapdock run Java?

Yeah, as soon as it becomes even remotely safe to do so, i'm right there with ya :) I could care less about MOST things in Ubuntu though it'd be nice to have. I really mainly just want a very simple RDP client. lol Its not asking so much, is it ?!? :)

Agreed. I'm sure that having a real OS on webtop instead of just a browser would open up some options I am not even thinking about at the moment - but pushing the limits of what is possible is fun anyway! :)

I have it. Tomorrow I'll buy the phone itself from Costco.

Opted to pick up the LapDock tonight to have one secured. The employees at the local corporate store seemed impressed. I can confirm that there is no tethering required!

I went to 2 corporate stores today to get on and was EXTREMELY disappointed. I know it's capabilities are limited but for what it does I'm a fan.

Only problem is you have to have the $50 or $80 data plan... the $30 unlimited plan does not qualify for it. I confirmed this at both corporate stores (only went to the 2nd because the 1st didn't have the extended battery I wanted which was 50% off btw) and even had the managers read the fine print to confirm. They wouldn't even sell it to me with out adding the more expensive data plans. They also confirmed that you need no special plan to use the Webtop feature, which is odd. Bummer, I really could of used this when I'm in the field and what not.

So, now we're back to the "I'll use the data I already pay for how I want it" argument, lol.

I love the mis-information you even get at corp stores. You do not have to change your data plan to get the lapdock, you can keep the unlimited plan.

I completely agree. There is absolutely no extra charge and they were merely trying to get you to sign up for an additional plan. That, or they were complete idiots. Or, maybe both.

They were idiots. The girl just returned form vacation and knew nothing about the Bionic so I asked for the manager. It seemed that he couldn't even read the policy on the computer. That's why I told them that I would ask the real experts, which prompted a puzzled look. I told them I would ask on this forum and they just laughed like I was crazy... that is until the guy helping a customer next to them looked over and agreed by saying that most corporate Verizon employees only know what's on the display card and nothing else, haha.

I'm going to go back tomorrow and get it. They said they could sell it to me for $200 so I'm going to use their misinformation as leverage, lol.

Well that is actually them giving you correct information then. You can buy it for $200, but you have to change your plan to the $50 tiered plan. If you want to keep your unlimited you have to pay the $299.

What lembowski said is correct. The Lapdock is $299 but you can get a $100 rebate if:

(according to the rebate form)

1. You have to have either the $50/5GB or $80/10GB data plan
2. Data packages less than $50 and data package combinations are not eligible
3. Eligible data package must remain active for at least 30 consecutive days
4. Lapdock and Droid Bionic must appear on the same receipt.

But the reps are not that bright(ok in their defense VZW does not want them to know anything until immediately before a new phone goes on sale, so they do throw a lot of info at them.)

My rep wanted to sell it to me for $199 when I bought my phone and I told him "No. your wrong, I am keeping my unlimited data" He told me I was wrong and that it was $199 and I could keep my unlimited data. I said OK i'll take it, he went to ring it up and said "Oops" and said I was right, the manager was there and just discounted it to $199 and told the rep not to do that again.LOL (It actually turned out it was the managers fault, he had mis-trained them)

I bet if you try hard enough, try a few stores or keep calling til you get the right phone rep you'll get it for $199, lol.

Good Luck! :)

Ok, got the lapdock, here's what I found:

1. it is light, easy to carry around. I had an Ipad 2 i was using to take notes, tethered to my Droid Incredible. This has replaced it.
2. it's easier and more functional than a tablet. I have an unlimited data plan, so i like being able to use that available bandwidth. The touchpad is AWESOME when you are using a remote computer. i can use this device to connect to the Citrix server at work. i can then do everything from this lapdock that I can do from my desktop.
3. It's better than a laptop: Lighter, 4G connection, and almost instant on. other than that, it's very comparable to a laptop.

I did get this from my company's customer store, and they gave me $70 off. (not sure if that was an error or not) but I'm very happy with it.

I probably would not have gotten this if I didn't have unlimited data plan. I'm sucking up some serious bandwidth. I know it has 2 USB ports on the back, but I haven't used them yet. Not sure what to use it for...yet.

But they said that they could not sell it to me without upgrading my data plan. They said that I absolutely could not use it with my unlimited plan. I'm going to go correct them on lunch lol.

That is the best part. It is an accessory they do not charge anything more, you could buy it with out having service at all as a gift for somebody. What is the difference

Ok.. i'm SOOOOO Effing close. I got Citrix working on the phone itself.. Was able to pull up a Desktop session, run IE, etc... all from the phone. Couldn't ever get that working before either... well, I thought for SURE if it worked on the phone, it'd work in the 'webtop' on the Lapdock. Boy was I wrong. still giving me fits about me not having trusted 'CERT' which is what I named my Root Certificate Authority at home. GRRR. How can they not share the same information!! If it works on my phone the webtop should too!!!

EDIT: WOHOO!!! I got it!!! Citrix, using a Self-Signed Root CA, is now working on my Lapdock. It did require root privileges, but using ADB SHELL, I copied the CERT.cer to the ICA folder in a protected area, which is why I had to have root so i could 'su' on the terminal/shell session. I had downloaded my 'CERT.cer' to my sdcard (internal memory) on the Bionic. The destination file needs to be a .crt file though, not .cer so during my copy i change the name to .crt

Code:
su
cp /sdcard/CERT.cer” “/usr/lib/ICAClient/keystore/cacerts/CERT.crt”

I'm starting to wish after reading some reviews on the lapdock that you have the ability to choose either operating in Webtop or having the phones screen and controls mirrored over to the lapdock. That would be nice since the only thing I would want to do with it is browse on a bigger screen and watch netflix/zumocast movies.

You just click a button and your 'phone' goes full screen. I'm happy to demonstrate and post a video using my OG Droid as the camera, if you'd like. Its 'using' the webtop, but your phone screen does go full screen if you want it to be for exactly what you're talking about.

Really I'm liking that, so basically its the lapdock running 2.3.4 right? I'm not a fan at all of the Firefox browser. Even if they gave you the option of installing chrome or something I think that would be a huge step forward.

Inregards to the video I would love that! Just a couple minutes showing things you can do, showing the speed at which it operates and such would be great!

I agree. And, the more tabs you have open the more noticibly slow the webtop runs. I just verified.. I made my phone go full screen and then launched netflix, when the video started playing, it went landscape and full screen. Note, Netflix on the bionic still suffers from that clicking/popping noise slightly along with a minor stutter every now 'n then. netflix does believe this is a software issue with their stream on the Bionic and are working on it.

Congratulations! I;m glad to see you got it working! Yeah, when I accessed your computer yesterday There were "untrusted site" and "unsigned certificate" warnings popping up, lol.

Hope it works well for you. :_

I am still trying to figure out where they are at with the Atrix webtop. On XDA there are dozens of threads and different methods and approaches - I'll just keep reading a little at a time til I see where they are at.

Here ya go. REALLY crappy video from my Original Moto Droid, but its all I had haha.

BIONIC Lapdock - Netflix and Citrix - YouTube

Wow, I sound all stuffed up or something, 'must' be the phone. lol

EDIT: If there's anything anyone wants to see, even though the video quality will suck, let me know. I'm more than happy to add additional videos.

Ahh, really think this thing is cool if I don't want to tether or mobile hotspot. Decisions, decisions.

@SnydersWeb. I use the PhoneMyPC app on the Bionic (also used it on the original Droid - really small screen! - but it zooms) to access my Win 7 and XP computers. It works great! On the phone, you toggle mouse cursor movement with panning. I wonder if this app would work with the LapDock?

I have the HD Station and the Webtop Travel adapter and am waiting for my micro HDMI cable to arrive from MonoPrice tomorrow to see how it works on the HD TV.

But maybe that is a solution to accessing your PC. In the past, I have moved files remotely by emailing them to myself from the PC using PhoneMyPC, but since the Bionic supports file transfer, that should be transparent.
