Android Central Question

Just bought new yesterday at Verizon. Phone is running Android 6.0.1 though shows security patch dated 12/1/16. I ran the Software update twice yesterday which says it is installing MMB29M.G900VVRU2DQL1 patch dated 2017-08-01- it also updates numerous apps each time.

Why does it keep wanting to run it again and how do I get it to stop?

If there have been a few updates since the phone was made, and they aren't cumulative, it has to install each one in order. Eventually it's going to catch up to the "present time". (By this time, there are no new versions of Android for an S5 - there are all security patches, and a lot has happened since December, so let it keep updating the system if it wants to. (It shouldn't be able to do a system update more than once every 24 hours.)

As for the apps - developers add and fix things. I'd go into airplane mode (so the updating stops) and use an app like App Backup & Restore to back up all your current apps first, then let it go and update everything. (And turn off automatic updating in Play, while you're at it.) Sometimes an app gets so "fixed" that it becomes useless, so you can uninstall the "fixed" version and install the last good one. (Maps had that happen for a while - really still does. It used to have a little directory of locations you go to. Now if you've gone to a few dozen locations using Maps, you can, as the old joke has it, seek forever. And MyDirections, which made it trivial to keep a "Contacts-like" list of destinations, can't load its own backup in 8.0.1. I hope that can get fixed, I really depend on it.)

Out of curiosity - how were you able to buy an S5 NEW at a Verizon store? Those haven't been sold in probably 3 or 4 years.

Thanks for the suggestion to continue the updates - it appeared that it was showing me the same one each time though and it already ran it twice within one day. But I'll look more closely. Can't answer the why was I able to buy new - the store still offers the S5 and it was not marked as used or previously owned. I didn't want the latest (too big and too expensive) so this was a good choice for me.
