Browser problem

How to fix the fourm ?

First off I know this is not the place to post this but I cant seem to find the right location to post it.

When I load a forum now my computer locks for about 3-4 sec as it loads this giant damn footer of useless information at the bottom of the forum.. It used to not do this and I find it annoying and a waste of space. Is there anyway besides using the mobile version of the forum to stop this giant footer from loading ??

Thanks guys for your help sorry its in the wrong place.

edit.
Mod please fix the title my go go spellchecker is changing crap that it should not.

Re: AC website bloated!

sorry to resurect an old thread... but...

the footers on the home page and in the forums with the twitter, meet the team, etc.. seem to really slow down and choke my browsing experience using IE or Firefox.

often in Firefox I can see its waiting on cdn.androidcentral.com, twimg.com, and others while trying to render the page. While waiting on these sites, the browser just freezes... You can't scoll the page, or click on anything...

and it does it every page load... click to read an article, and I have to WAIT while its trying to grab all that stuff... Browsing the forums, clicking into and out of thread.. each page change, it does that.

It makes the site unbearable.

Doesn't seem like the forum needs to be fixed. Seems that it's a computer issue.

EDIT: Try to Google your issue. Unlikely that computer help will present itself in the LG Optimistic S roms and hacking section. I have been wrong before though. :p anyway good luck with your issue!

Re: How to fix the fourm ?

I am using Firefox and never had the issue before. What is happening is its loading the whole page just fine but then it loads a bunch of other stuff after the thread on the bottom. Adds Android central forum news and facebook friends of Android Central. Its like its loading the home page or something after this. Also I can rule out your "Computer is the problem" theory as I restored to a known good backup that did not have this issue before and i'm still having it ? any ideas would help

Re: How to fix the fourm ?

Edit.

When I bring up adblocker it see's this area as the "superfooter" any idea rofl ?

Re: How to fix the fourm ?

I'm pretty sure it's not a problem with your computer or your browser, but rather a whole lot of ads and stuff about the site intentionally added to the end of each page. It makes the pages very slow to load, and I hate it. But someone wants it there and carefully put it there.

Re: How to fix the fourm ?

The reason I drew that conclusion is because my computer has not acted differently with any of the updates. So, if it hasn't effected everyone's computer, then its probably specific to your computer/settings programs, etc...

I have never had this problem ever. I use srware Iron( chromium) on my computer. Tapatalk works great as far as the phone goes.

Sent from my Drew Stable CM7/ XioniaRedux lg-ls670 using Tapatalk.

Re: AC website bloated!

I'm experiencing the same thing for the last couple days, I get a 5 second total freeze on Firefox (I.E. seems okay). Each page does it. Load 5 pages and once they hit that item, it's going to take 25 seconds for the browser to unlock and finish loading the page.

I cleared browser cache, Flash cache, and disabled all blockers, no help.

Re: How to fix the fourm ?

Ok, So i'm not confusing anyone with what i'm talking about I took a screen shot so people could see. I'm talking about all the extra Junk that it loads after the end of the thread. I tried IE9, FF5, Chrome all of them seem to give me the same thing. Also I would figure if it was a browser problem it would not affect every browser on the computer, but for crap and giggles I loaded it up on my wife's laptop with the same result.

So ether I confused people about what I was talking about or I have some wonky setting messed up across multiable browsers and computers. :-\

Re: AC website bloated!

What you said in your first post was that your computer freezes. If you are saying that there are now ads and other stuff at the bottom, then yeah, there are ads and other stuff at the bottom.... There are frequent changes to the site.

Well, they don't make my computer freeze, but they make it stutter. I've had real responsiveness issues since the heavy footer was added.

Re: AC website bloated!

Hey guys - I definitely appreciate and hear your frustrations/feedback regarding the footer and have communicated them to those who've been working on it. There were a few hiccups after the footer was originally enabled that resulted in non-responsive and/or crashing IE9 and IE8 browsers. A fix was put in place Sunday that should have addressed the issue.

The mods and I did some testing on our phone web browsers; including Dolphin, Samsung, HTC, and Motorola's. On my desktop PC I tested the most current versions of Chrome, Firefox, and IE. On my Mac I tested Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. I also have laptops running the same browsers. Based on each of these checks passing - and the feedback I was hearing in the other thread - the footer was re-enabled.

Leslie is probably reading this and saying "it just happened to me yesterday!" :p If anyone is still experiencing browser lockups - or what you would consider unacceptable page load times - do not hesitate to post here. Please provide as much detail as you can regarding your browser/version and whether you're on a PC or Mac. Listing any plug-ins you might be using would also be helpful.

Regarding feedback specific to content and/or value of the footer. Every single feature we've added and/or aesthetic change that's made is done for one single reason: to enhance and provide a unique user experience. If you ever see something that doesn't pass that test - anywhere in the forums - then we want to hear from you. I can tell you that the guys behind the scenes have been and continue to work really hard on the footer and are passionate about making the site better for our members. I know they aren't finished working on it yet, and adjustments will continue to be made to optimize performance and content.

As for the everything between the header and footer -- I have more direct control (aka blame me) over these areas, so if you see anything in these areas that doesn't look right - or isn't performing well - be sure and let me know. I can usually address these issues quickly. If you see something that needs urgent attention, feel free to hit the contact us link or email me directly: cory.streater@androidcentral.com. I am also emailed every time a new thread is started in this forum, so no feedback is ignored.

Also, if you're not registered and/or logged in, be sure and do so. Logged in members do not see the side bar and will benefit from a reduction in flash ad's - which by the way isn't some evil thing sites do to torture their visitors - it's how sites generate revenue for the infrastructure and bandwidth required to provide content to those who visit. That said, we have one flash ad at the top of the forums and an occasional pop-under, but overall I think we have fewer ads than any of the Android specific forums I've visited.

Re: AC website bloated!

Cory, thanks for your detailed reply.

The footer still stutters on my screen (a PC running IE 7 with generally fast corporate internet access), especially if I scroll down far enough for it to be visible. A more general problem with having a large footer is that if I find I have seen a page before, I used to quickly scroll to the bottom to reach the "next page" buttons. Now I am apt to over-shoot, and end up in molassas-land in the footer.

I am sympathetic to your need for paying ads. I am less enamoured of all the blurbs and news links and whatnot down there. Isn't there some more central place (that I don't bump into by mistake over and over again) where it could live? Perhaps as a side-bar to the news area or something?

Again, thanks for your excellent service.

Re: AC website bloated!

Cory,

Thanks!

Some details...

Right now, I'm at work, using my Thinkpad T410 (core i5 M520), 4gig ram, running 64bit Win 7 Professional. Firefox 3.6.18 as well as IE 8.0.7601.17544. It did the same at home using my comcast cable and this laptop as it does here in the office (large corporate complex's network and internet access).

Same symptoms on my home PC (core i7-860), 8gig ram, running 64bit Win 7 Ultimate. Not sure the exact Firefox version (I think its 3.6.18 or 3.6.20) or IE8 version. (I'll post those later tonight when I get home.

It happens on the androidcentral.com home page, as well as the forums, whether I'm signed in or not.

In firefox I see "Reading..." or "transferring data from..." or "waiting for..." and a URL when it pauses...

examples include:
cdn.androidcentral.com
widgets.twimg.com
api.twitter.com
profile.ak.fbcdn.net
quantserve.com
www.facebook.com

It happens when I switch pages (like click on an article on the home page, or a thread title in the forums) or even if I just hit "refresh" buton.

The page renders fine, and everything is visible after the pauses stop.

hope that helps.

Re: AC website bloated!

For me, it's not so much that it's taking too long to load (Well, it is, but manageable time frames- like 5 seconds), but rather all the ads.

The ads on the right hand side of the page, under the forums, on the top, etc. They make this site almost unbearable. I've started coming on here less since the increase in the number of ads.

Like right now, this quick reply box is about 2/3rds down the page. That means 1/3rd of the page is filled with ads (Under the box). I mean, okay, sure, they're all AndroidCentral related, but still. Just put a simple 1" x 4" rectangular box with a link...

And then with the ads on the top of the page, I can easily say that half of every forum page is dedicated to advertisements. THAT, to me, is unacceptable. Maybe one banner on top, one banner on the bottom. That should be enough. Focus on the content of the forums, not generating revenue, and revenue will find it's way to you.
