My default thread subscription mode in settings is "Instantly using Email, Push", and when creating a thread I leave "Subscribe to this thread and notify me of changes" enabled, but after the thread is created, when I check later I find I have not received email notifications of new replies as I am unsubscribed and have to subscribe manually.

What app are you using? The Android Central app is very buggy. Some say they don't have any problems with it but many say it barely works. It could be device related or OS or who knows. Tapatalk is the one I use and I don't have any subscribe issues when posting original content or replying to threads. It offers push notifications but on my device it is capped at 24 notifications. They still go to my email but the app will only push 24 unread notifications.

Of course I never have any issues when posting from a PC or laptop, and Tapatalk pushes those notifications up to the limit previously mentioned.

I'm using Chrome on Android to access the site. The thread I just created ("Photos: deletes duplicate without permission") also had the same issue: after creating it, I saw I was not automatically subscribed despite my settings so had to manually subscribe.

It may be as simple as a setting that you're overlooking or there may be some issue with your account. While this seems like the place to post such issues and get help within the site, there doesn't appear to be anyone looking in to it or at least not posting back a reply saying they are looking or offering advice. I've seen @B. Diddy mention a name or whom to send such site related issues to so perhaps he could offer some direction in this case. After all subscribing to threads, especially ones you've created, seems pretty basic.

A new thread I created not only wasn't automatically added to my subscriptions but seems to be missing a subscribe button entirely! I'll email them.

Edit: now the subscribe button is there...

It seems when creating a thread now, at least on mobile, there is no option to specify subscription. I have to edit the thread to see this option at which point I can see I'm not subscribed. So I'm not being automatically subscribed. I reported the issue to the email address above in November and followed up just now.
