Buying and selling phones while on contract

We are currently out of contract with Verizon. Have three smart phones and with my company paying for mine it cost me $90/mo total for the other two. Verizon has the only service in my area. And with the company paying for my service it's a no brainer to stay with them. I just hate the idea that even though I'm out of contract i'm still paying subsidized prices. I would love to play around with other phones. If I re up with Verizon and lets say get some Iphone 5's can I just use my phones and sell the Iphones? Use that money for my contract or buy different phones when I need to. Or will i be stuck with them. As long as i pay the bill does it matter?

Not sure what your company's requirements are, but Verizon does allow you to sell the new phones and put the old phones back on the lines

Think the only requirement with Verizon a small time frame the new phone has to be on the account. Its like 3 days to a week.

There is no requirement like that. You can put another phone on the line within minutes of activating a new phone. I would at least make a few phone calls with the new phone and log on to see that the new phone has been fully activated but after that, you can put a different phone on the line right away.

Once you buy any phone from Verizon, its yours. Doesn't matter if it was at a subsided price. You can sell them and buy others. I've switched phones, 4g to 3g and back again countless times over the years.

Thanks for the replies. I hear horror stories about people buying used phones and not being able to activate them. Clean esn? I just thought Verizon phones were tied to a contract till the contract was completed. So I can buy and sell any used Verizon phone and be good?

Clean ESN means the phone has not been reported lost or stolen and the account on which it was purchased on contract is up to date in payments. If the phone was purchased off contract or if the contract has expired, that latter point is irrelevant.

Older 3G and 4G LTE Verizon phones were CDMA only phones so they were functional on Verizon only simply because of how CDMA works. They didn't have GSM radios and in the case of the 3G phones, many didn't have SIM cards either. If the phone only had CDMA radios on it, you could flash another CDMA carrier's firmware on the phone if you had access to the other carrier's firmware, like PagePlus, but that requires some technical know how.

It is only the newer Verizon 4G LTE phones that have SIM cards and GSM radios in them.

Yes, you can buy and sell any used Verizon phone and put it on your Verizon account as long as it has a clean ESN AND is not currently activated on someone else's Verizon line. You can check that here:

It can also get a bad esn if the device was moved to another account after purchase, and that account wasn't up to date on payments or reported it lost or stolen
