Camera update? Do US One's really have it?

Are you shooting through a windshield? If so, that's part of the problem with this particular picture. Also, the lighting looks like the worst possible scenario for a camera (in general, not just phone cameras).

Also, it's kind of unrealistic to expect a great picture every single time. If software could get it right every time, then DSLR's wouldn't have manual adjustments.

I second that it looks like it was taken through a windshield, but also, was zoom applied? Because digital zoom sucks.

While I'm no photographer, this is is a smart phone, one shouldn't need to be a photographer to get decent pictures. The One's camera is adequate at best, it's really the one issue that is bothersome. The rest of this device is amazing.

This is really not correct. The One camera is stellar for a phone. There are plenty of pictures around to show that. Unless you got a defective unit, it will take good pictures.

This is really not correct. The One camera is stellar for a phone. There are plenty of pictures around to show that. Unless you got a defective unit, it will take good pictures.

It isn't defective. I'm not saying it's not possible to take good pictures, I'm saying it's inconsistent. Some pictures are great, most aren't. This isn't the case with any other smartphone I've owned. All my iPhones and Treo's were very consistent in what I could expect. They all have their limits, but they weren't inconsistent.

How many pictures have you taken with it?

I have taken plenty of pictures and when they don't turn out, which is often, it wasn't the camera's fault. There is no comparison imo between the one camera and the iphone or treo.

Agreed, it's nowhere near as good as the 4s I came from. I'm sure that the next version will at least step up the megapixel count. They can do all kinds of trickery with software and the sensor and "ultrapixels", but 4mp is just too small.

No you mis-understand. The iphone is not near as good as the One.

If you have only taken 50 or 60 pictures, you really have no idea if the camera is good or not. Try taking a bunch more. You will start to learn what you are doing wrong.

And 4mp is not too small. What do you think more megapixels is going to do for you if you can't get a good shot with the camera? More resolution of a bad photo? That makes no sense at all.

If the next version of the one has more megapixels, it will only be because they couldn't overcome the delusion that people have about the effect of megapixels.

To put more megapixels in the same size sensor, you would have to use smaller pixels and lose all the goodness of the htc one camera. I really hope HTC is successful in getting people past this megapixel fixation.

I just spoke with a T Mobile representative and they told me that they were aware of the camera and the home and back buttons non responsive and that there will be a update in the future but does not know when

Yes, they do. The update was on all versions of the One launched in the US.

Shot in the dark here, but I'm assuming its because the phone comes stock on 1.27, and that's the software build you have? The very first update that was released to international models came built in the NA models, one of which you own. This update fixed some problems that the camera was having, but did not correct all problems that the phone was having. Hense the need for a second update, or in the north American market, first update.

Anyone who cares about photography is running their pics through something as needed. Doesn't matter if you are talking about a phone or a DSLR. Surprisingly, though, many times the One is good to go from the camera.

For example, this is one of mine dead straight from the camera. No edits whatsoever. I tried to process it but the original was always better so I kept it as it came out of the camera. Not even using the phone editing.

And, I assure you it looks much better on my computer than it does uploaded to this site and compressed.

You have the update. No north American One was shipped without it. All of the European versions did.

You may be talking about a different update than what everyone else in this thread is.

As a matter of fact, it is the mark of an amateur photographer if they DON'T post process their pictures. Just like in the good old film days, you need to process your photos in Photoshop or a similar program after you take them.

Yes. Think of the file as your film negative. If you took film to the 1 hour wal-mart for prints you get a different (worse) result than if you took it to a custom printer and discussed what you wanted from the shot.

One thing I like about the one is that the file is pretty flat, especially with sharpness -1. That means that you can better adjust the picture to taste later as opposed to some phones that over process the file by default.

And you don't have to use photoshop, you can get good results from free or pay android apps - though processing on the phone is not as easy. I prefer Adobe Lightroom on the PC.

No windshield here. Perfect sunlight day in Hawaii just blurred picture .
