Can anyone link me to more information regarding file permissions?

Tons of games ask to "access photos, media, and files on your device"

This leads me to many questions regarding privacy and security.

Is it because Android cannot give an app access to its own area/sandbox, but instead has to give access to everything?

I would love to give apps access to their own files, but not access my private files, is there any way to achieve this?

Why isn't this a feature already? is this a very hard problem or am i the only one who wants it?
