Can someone explain how I would use 2 SIMS (1 sim from ATT and other Esim)

I was just reading about people having 2 SIMS in their phones.

I already have an ATT SIM in my phone which I use for personal, and I would like to explore the option of adding an eSIM for my work phone (number) so I do not need to carry 2 phones.

1) Would all text messages go to Google Messages? Or would I have 2 messaging apps (one fore each)?
2) How would I make phone calls when I have 2 different numbers?

Any cons to going this route?

Thank you in advance.

Good questions. The only thing I know about it is that you'll have two signal bar indicators if you're running them simultaneously.

For Pixels (other phones may have different functionality) there will be settings in the Internet & Network section to pick which SIM to use for 1) calls and SMS and 2)Data. If I remember correctly from my limited time with 2 SIMS, you'll receive calls from both sims with the incoming sim's number displayed; texts from both sims will be in the messages app sorted by incoming sim. Only one sim can be active for data. Outgoing calls can default to one sim, or be set to ask which to use.

Does my phone need to be unlocked to do this? I bought it from ATT.

I'm pretty sure it would have to be if one of the sims is non-AT&T. My phone was unlocked when I had two sims, so no experience trying this on a locked phone.
