Can you set the MHL/HDMI output resolution?

I've just started playing around with an MHL adapter, and it works, but I've noticed a problem. When I connect it to my 1080p tv, it outputs at 1080p, but the output can be choppy, like for games or video. But when I connect it to my old 720p tv, everything runs as smooth as on the phone. So is this an issue with the phone or the 1080p tv? I can't find any settings in either the phone or the tv to lower the resolution to 720p. Does anyone else have this problem, or does it automatically output at 720p on your 1080p tvs?

Figured I'd bump this up, in case anyone had any info to share. I still haven't figured it out. I can only think of getting some sort of adapter, which kind of defeats the purpose.

I do have the mhl adapter and it works flawlessly, on my 1080p tv. No lag or choppines. I got the mhl adapter a t-mobile with a coupon for 10 bucks. You might want to try on a different 1080p tv to see if is the tv or it might be the adapter itself. Just try and let me know if that works. Also if the adapter is bad you might want to get the one on monoprice. Com my friend has that one and it works flawlessly also. Take care budy and good luck.

Well, it's working now! Not sure why. Actually, when I plugged it in this last time, my tv wouldn't get any signal, even though the phone was showing it was in mhl mode (notification logo and it went into landscape mode). So after unplugging and re-plugging a few times, my phone locked up and I had to reboot. I checked it on my older, 720p tv first, to see if the cable and mhl adapter (both monoprice, btw) were working. So I plugged it into the 1080p tv, and success! Everything I display runs as smooth as it does on the phone's screen. The tv does still indicate it's outputting at 1080p, too, like it did before. Maybe the reboot did something, I don't know. Maybe there was some issue with background apps or something that was fixed in the last update that needed a reboot to start working. Hopefully, it'll keep working. Thanks for the advice, though!

I've noticed it too, on my 1080p tv it's choppy. The phone is too weak to handle 1080. On 720p tv's it works smoothly.

I aslo have t mobile MHL it works flawlessly on my 720p in dash 8" unit in my car, at home I use HTC media link hd with my 1080p tv and it works flawlessly, my favorite feature on this phone.

Hi,
new to this forum and fairly new to android. I have a HTC one, I purchased a cheap MHL to HDMI cable and find that the resolution, when streaming live video is terrible... Would the media link solve this issue??
Furthermore, content directly STORED ON MY PHONE is fine, it's the live part that gets blurry...
I've looked at rooting, thought that seemed a little out of my depth, and am considering just purchasing a smaller screen. But my main purpose for doing this was to stream a live video to my TV...
As I said, I'm new, be kind! But ANY help would be so much appreciated!

FIX!!!!!
I know this post is about 3 years old, but I found this post now while browsing in 2016 so I hope this helps someone out.

To change the resolution and make games and all apps lag free (with the method I found) you MUST be rooted.

If rooted, download a root terminal/cmd and type ru in prompt and hit enter. Then type wm size 720x1280. ***Will stay on indefinitely until reverted back with command ru then wm size 1080x1920***

Now your device will be 720p, but you will notice that your icons are huge. To fix that in CM12.1 go to setting/look and feel/DPI and change from 440 to 320. If you don't have CM12.1 download a DPI changer and change to 320, or find corresponding root cmd to change DPI... I don't know it because CM12.1 has one stock.

Now everything should be lag free and awesome for gaming! I use sixasis and screen standby and have been playing Zelda on the couch the last few evening.

Hope this helps at least one person.

Side note: I'm not sure about the aspect ratio for Samsungs or any other device... But these resolution are 16:9. I know my original note was something weird like 16:10. Most likely all devices now are 16:9, just wanted to make sure everyone was aware of that before changing screen res..... IF for some reason their aspect ratio is different.

hey man thanks for the updatw eventhough its an old thread, it is useful for me.now need to figure out how to root with my screen not responding. right now im controlling it with a BT keyboard.it was a sony repurposed as media center (and im typing this on my tv). my solution was kill all the apps before running a video but the lag is still there
