I've had it work 2.5 times out of 3 now.
Worked: paying a cab fare, paying at CVS.
Half worked: at another CVS. GW detected the terminal fine, initiated the transaction, but apparently I moved the phone away too fast. The terminal just sat there looking dumb and unimpressed, while GW threw a "the transaction may not have completed, try again" type error. I held the phone up again but no response from either GW or the terminal, and with 473 people behind me in line (all scowling at the idiot up front waving his phone around) I didn't exactly feel like hitting Home, closing GW, reopening GW, reentering my PIN, waiting for it to initialize again, etc...
As far as getting the scan to recognize, I've had to have the phone unlocked and GW open and ready before tapping the terminal each time. (Second two attempts, I actually entered my PIN while waiting in line, too, since I knew that would be necessary anyway.)
For now, I've killed off the balance on my prepaid card and don't plan to refill it. (If you don't want to leave a balance remaining, Paypass terminals will let you "top up" the remainder of your bill with another card if the prepaid GW card comes up short.) GW will be convenient when it supports all my credit/debit cards so it actually acts as a replacement wallet. Until then, it's just too much extra hassle/embarrassment.
Still, the fact that I could use it if I wanted to makes my inner geek happy.
