Can't send text messages

My wife and I decided to join the 21st Century so our grandchildren can text to us and we purchased two Samsung Galazy S4 on Verizon network These are our first smart phones. . Neither phone is able to send or receive text messages. The phones spin for awhile and then finally displays a failure message. Is there anything simple that "newbies" can try to solve this problem? I read one suggestion to turn off WiFi but that didn't help. No other problems have been found so far.

they should work right out of the box. i would visit a Verizon retail store and ask one of their "experts".

Thanks. I traveled to a Verizon store earlier today but they told me It would be a 30-45 minute wait. I couldn't wait that long. I'll try to call the store tomorrow and get an appointment for a specific time.
Hope they can get it working.

If it's an MMS text (includes an attachment like a picture), make sure to turn data on.
