Captivate Self Shut Down + Fix

Return of the Shutdown bug on official Froyo?

I had an early Captivate that was bedeviled by the random shutdown bug. AT&T replaced it and the bug went away.
Since I updated to (official) 2.2, it's back, but not as bad. Every few days I pick it up and discover it has turned off. Is anyone else experiencing this?

I decided to wait until the 2.2 upgrade to see if that would fix the shut down issue. It did not, so I returned it last Saturday only to be given a refurbished unit from that same batch. Just today, the shut off happened again. I went to the AT&T service center in Dallas and they gave me another Captivate. I specifically asked for one made after 11/6 and she assured me that was all they had. After confirming again when she handed it to me, I got to my car and looked under the hood and sure enough, another pre-11/6 phone with an affected IMEI!
The next time it shuts down again I am calling AT&T demanding a new phone. They just keep recycling the same affected phones!

Same exact story. My first captivate had the random shut down bug, returned it in first 30 days for a new one. No shut downs for two months, updated to Froyo then two shut downs in one day. Called AT&T got a refurb 2 days a go, no shut down so far and the GPS is the best out of my 3 captivates. If this one has the shut down bug I'm going to raise hell until they let me switch to an inspire or an atrix.

This bug is horrible! I had it on the first for, got a new one from at&t, thought I was in the clear for a while and it came back, tried a hacked version of 2.2 and it was still there. I've pretty much figured it out, and would like to see if it works this way on your phones as well. Try to only charge your phone to 84%, anything above this my phone will have the bug multiple times a day as long as its above 84%, anything lower, no bug! Try it, see if it works n let me know.

My captivate is a launch phone and I had the shutdown error when I was running the leaked ucji6 DesignGears first leaked, I had issues with shutdowns. Since I switched over to custom i9000 roms never had a shutdown issue at all. I am currently running supernova 5.2 with firebird v2 kernel voodoo lagfix and kp1 modem. All running solid with no issues.

Since I upgraded my phone I have also seen the random shutdown return. I also exchanged my phone because of it. I am really considering getting an Atrix

I'm on Captivate #8. The last one quit charging all together. It also had the random shut-down bug. Captivate 8 showed up yesterday, and not only does it have the shut-down bug, it requires a battery pull and 20 minutes or more of sitting to get it to come back on.

I'm waiting for AT&T escalations to call me back. The department the supervisor needs isn't open until tomorrow.

Basically, I told them they can either refund the money I paid for the device, and cancel the contract, and I'll return the device to the AT&T store and buy the Atrix with the credit, or they can ship me an Atrix.

The way I look at it is I paid for a certain feature set, and locked myself into a contract. I will not take a lesser device, and this one is obviously defective. They can match my contract price for price and feature for feature, or take the device back and let me out of my contract, with a refund of the purchase price I paid for the defective unit.

Keep in mind, this is on a Premier account, and we spend a LOT of money with AT&T Wireless. Our monthly bill alone is over $275.

There should be a Lemon Law for these things, I swear.

I had gotten a Captivate from someone of Craigslist and it worked fine for almost a month then the random shut downs started happening. Funny thing is the last four of the IMEI was way above the affected batch numbers, but when I check Samsung's website to see when it was made it was before 11/6. It's being fixed now, looks like they replaced two things (says REPLACED TIB AND RCV) so hopefully that'll be my last problem with it *fingers crossed*

Looks like they are shipping me an HTC Surround to replace the Captivate. This may work out ok, since the wife's line is due for upgrade, and she likes the Surround. I'll burn her upgrade for the Atrix or Inspire.

I bought my captivate September. It is unrooted.. and it would periodically shut down on its own. I was in hopes the 2.2 upgrade would fix it and the GPS problems. After the 2.2 upgrade the phone has definitely gotten worse... the GPS is basically unusable... the shut down seems to happen after its removed from the charger on full charge (after over night charge) AT&T has sent me a remanufacturered replacement with IMEI #3518... I kinda hope this number is affected the same way so I can ask to swap to a different phone...and I would be even more happy to go to a different carrier..(cough..Verizon ).. I'll post any problems with the "NEW" phone..

my captivate began to randomly shut down maybe once every few days after the 2.2 upgrade, it never did prior... then it began to lock up too. i did the wipe user data thing after holding the power button and both volume buttons, and it fixed the problem. no more shut downs.

number 5

I recently got number five back from the repair center, this one has not shutdown and I updated it asap to the 2.2, still have no problems....seems really solid......so far.

I have received my second phone and I am still experiencing the random shutdowns. This is really becoming annoying.

I still have 2.1, but I also experienced random shut downs at night about every 7=9 days. I put CAPTIVATE STAY ALIVE and to date its been 31 days since it last turned off. I don't want to send my phone in unless I am forced to because I have a 25$ screen protector, that I would have to replace and frankly thats BS. Also this is not just a defect with Captivate, I have spoken to other droid owners aka: Motorola Droid X, my friend has had 5 of them, she is so fed up with the shut downs, she just got the reg. droid, however of course your not rembursed for your screen protector, or phone covers etc. They just keep giving refurbished crap.
If I only have one shutdown once a month, I can live with that.

Does anyone have an IMEI number that is higher than the number listed in the internal service bulletin? The bulletin is here in case you haven't seen it: Service Bulletin: Random Shutdown Issues on AT&T Captivate
I don't, but I called because my phone fits in the defective product description. They say if they determine your phone to not be in warranty (including and damage or water exposure) after they recieve it, you may be charged $409 for the new phone and they wont return your old phone to you. I'm not crazy about that... anyone have any thoughts regarding that?

I would like to make a hypothesis. The problem is the batteries... at least some batteries and probably some glitch in the phone/software relating to power.

I've owned a Captivate for a year now a don't remember ever having this problem... until now, when I got a new OEM battery to replace my original battery that was failing. In fact, I got two batteries; one is the normal 1500mAh and one is the 3500mAh behemoth mega-battery. With both of these batteries, I immediately started experiencing phone shut downs during idle while unplugged. I loaded Captivate Keep Alive last night and the phone stayed alive with a setting of 85%. I will fiddle with the setting to see if I can set it higher.

Phone info. IMEI 8780. Froyo'd, rooted and lagfixed practically out of the box.
