Carrier IQ

You know I deleted all the files you mentioned (except the files in the lib folder) and the program doesn't seem to run. I reboot, however, and the IQAgent service runs on boot every time and has to be closed. Is there another file somewhere that can be deleted maybe? It doesn't seem to start back up once closed though.

Same for me.

Check again - maybe you missed some files?

Once I deleted all files and directories specified - EXCEPT for the ones in /system/lib

IQ Agent is completely gone, reboot - nothing listed in Manage Applications.

The phone does seem a little faster & more responsive without it.

Have to watch it a couple days though to verify improvement on battery life.

I think what people are saying is under
Menu->Settings->Applications->Running services

There is an entry for

Android System
Process: android.iqd
IQ Agent Service
Started by application: touch to stop

This service comes back upon reboot even if you stop it and remove the files listed.

I had to put it back in the system because Google Voice started to lag the phone sometimes. The only way I could tell that was to look at Spare Parts battery usage. Could be just coincidence but I never had this problem before and nothing else was changed.

IQ Agent Service is from Google. It is not the same as carrier IQ.

Sorry then (about android.iqd), our phones have too much IQ, too smart. too confusing.

So iqmsd is still starting up after removing the files posted earlier. That one is likely carrieriq based on what it is dynamically linked with.

It is started in /init.thunderc.rc based on the "service.iq.active" property

Thats something for Beezy & KSmith to fix ;)

And its not running on my phone...hmm....

Ok, even with
service iqmsd /system/bin/iqmsd
disabled

on property:service.iq.active=1
start iqmsd

on property:service.iq.active=0
stop iqmsd
commented out, it still starts :(

Are you sure the init.thunderc.rc changes are sticking? When I made changes, they got reset on reboot.

If you type in the shell

setprop service.iq.active 0

It does stop the service for that session, until you reboot, after which everything gets reset.

So, did you guys figure out what all must be removed to kill this service? (so it doesn't boot on start?)

(I'm using the stock rom - albeit deodexed...)

The init.thunderc.rc is part of the boot image ramdisk. You can change it, but need to regenerate the boot image. For most people, easier to do as part of rom upgrade. If you try to edit it after startup, it'll be good for that session, then reset to what is was before after reboot.

Hey guys - I'm the developer of SyndicateROM Frozen on the Epic 4G, and I'm the one who removed CIQ.

IQ Agent Service is from Google. It is not the same as carrier IQ.
Very wrong. The IQ Agent service has absolutely nothing to do with Google - it is Carrier IQ. The IQ Agent service starts as android.iqd as others pointed out in this thread.

Disabling iqmsd in the kernel is not enough, as another user noticed, to disable Carrier IQ - it is a start, but only a very limited one. I can't speak for you folks on the Optimus S, but on the Epic 4G, Carrier IQ and its calls are located in ext.jar, services.jar, framework.jar, libiq_client.so, libiq_service.so, and iqmsd. More information on what CIQ does, and how it was removed, is available here (see bottom of second, and third, posts).

Keep in mind that I and my team (the Android Creative Syndicate) are in the process of updating SyndicateROM Frozen to 1.0.1, and refining the removal process. For other devices, we currently have confirmation of the software being on the Moment, Intercept, Evo, Hero, and the Optimus S. The removal process is different per-device, so for all you devs and users, YMMV.

If any of you would like to contact me or my team directly, feel free to join us at irc.fossnet.info #acs-users.

I searched my entire phone and could not find any of the files listed or anything to delete yet I can find the process running on my phone. What am I doing wrong?

1. Welcome to AC!

2. Are you rooted? What ROM are you running?

I am not rooted running a stock LG Optimus Kernel version 2.6.35.7 Not sure if that is what you are looking for. If its not tell me where to find the info you want

Then you will not be able to remove any part of this and I doubt that you are even able to access the directories where this stuff is found. For example, there is a big difference between /sdcard/data (where you are most likely looking) and /data (the system's directory where some of this is found).

For what it's worth, I list getting completely rid of or at least stopping this process among my top 3 reasons to root.

Wish I'd found this thread yesterday after reading the stories at Gizmodo and Lifehacker. Ran the automated CIQ removal tool, which gave me an endless reboot loop.

Glad for the walkthroughs here. Was able to fairly quickly and easily reflash. I'm running gROM now since I have ZVH and didn't want to mess with reverting last night until I knew I could get the phone booting again. As gROM is a tweaked version of the stock ROM, it looks to me like most or all of the CIQ bits that are in stock are still in gROM. Hopefully someone with greater knowledge of it can confirm or correct me on that.
