We visit Europe every summer, and we customarily spend 7-10 days of our trip visiting different areas of the UK. For example, last summer, we enjoyed touring Wales (Conwy, Portmeirion, and Fishguard) and Bath; this summer, we spent a week exploring parts of Somerset (Wells and Glastonbury) and Cornwall (Port Isaac, St. Ives, and Marazion); next summer, we hope to visit the Lakes District. It never fails to be a delightful experience for us there (especially once we get out of London). I've always brought my Victorinox penknife in my luggage and then carried it around in my pocket -- mainly because it has a small light, a scissor, and a ball point pen built in, all of which prove useful at some point almost daily. I had no idea that carrying a small penknife was regarded as a criminal offense in the UK, but thanks for the warning!
