Cases and screen protectors?

Also making a new case decision. I have a Seidio Innocase on my Thunderbolt.. it looks great, but after about a year (~10 drops), one day a drop randomly caused the screen to crack. So yeah, it's hard to have faith in Seidio..

I'm in New Zealand and there is no sign of any accessories yet so I ordered the above from the UK. It looks like the screen will be protected when lying face down and the are a heap of colour options from that seller. I like that its a genuine Samsung product, and I'm pleased to find it in red. Will look good with the white I reckon!

What's the general opinion on screen protectors? Do they compromise function and looks all that much? This is my first smart phone and I want to look after it but not if it's going to spoil it.

I think I'm gonna go this route too. One clear case if the blue looks good and one colored in case it doesn't.

Gonna go with some cheap TPU case. As others have said, easy to remove and protect the phone well. As for the screen protector, I saw that SGP already have the ultra crystal up on amazon so I'll probably go for that since I loved it for my now aging Droid X.

AT&T sold the OBI Defender for my wife's i4s so it would surprise me to find one in the store when I pick up my SG3 at the store when it arrives.

Yup. Same here. Ultra crystal is still going strong on my DX. Even if the phone isn't.

Right, the case isnt ugly, it should look well with pebble blue, it has a kickstand, and most of all... its cheap! Cant beat that for now.

I have used the otterbox defender on my other phones and actually have it for my GN but not currently using it . I am using a slim style case just because need a holster for this phone doesnt feel right in my pocket unless when I am have a big side pocket on jeans/shorts to place it in .Also back on otterbox topic,,,I like the protection it offers but does turn any phone into a tank ha.Good to see they are starting to come in different colors tho .
As far a screen protectors goes I have used the wet aplication type but prefer the dry application ones .Still havent gotten either a case or screen protector ordered yet ,reviewing options on those still

I wonder if any studies have been conducted on the potential health risks having a cell phone in the pocket verses at the hip. I know years ago the countries state troopers had a large number of reports of prostate cancer. Some study claimed these occurrences we due to officers keeping radar detectors on their laps for speed trap surveillance while sit tng in their cars for a few hours during shifts . I would also think that your phone in your pocket could pose a similar risk that being your cell phone is closer in proximity. It's my thinking that some cases provide a shield like protection versus not using a case at all. Just saying....

So I understand the need for a case but I was wondering about a screen protector. I have had my droid x for close to 2 years now. I removed the screen protector after a year. I just didn't like the quality of the screen with it on. Granted it was probably a crappy screen protector. But since than I have accidentally put it in my pocket with my keys and god knows how many times I have dropped it. There isn't a single mark on the screen. This is just my personal opinion but do we think screens are more fragile than they actually are?

I'm sorry but I don't understand why any of you guys would purchase cheap (made and looking) accessories for a high end phone!! Really baffles me! Sure if it was a cheap to mid-tier phone but a high end phone?!?! Thats like putting cheap parts/upgrades on a lamborghini....lol! To each is own I guess!

So just a warning to anyone getting screen protectors. The hard plastic ones, like the Spigen SGP Steinheil Ultra Crystal/Fine/Oleophobic/Optics are going to be smaller then the actual glass due to the curved screen corners. However, if you get a flexible one, like the Spigen SGP Steinheil Ultra Flex HD, it will cover the whole screen as it can conform to the curves of the glass.

Here is a comparison chart directly from Spigen comparing their different protectors for the S3. In the "Coverage" description is where it warns of this.

I would also assume that this is true for other hard plastic screen protectors.

I've had this on my DX for the past 10 months. It works perfectly.

It's not cheap at all. TPU is a thing of beauty. No bulk, slides in and out of the pocket easily, feels nice in the hand, protects well, and doesn't get lint stuck all over it.

As long as you are careful handling your phone then what case you have on it isn't a big deal.

And your analogy is all wrong. If I were putting crappy RAM in the phone then it would make sense. Your analogy should be it's like not buying a mink lined car cover for your lamborghini and just buying something from pep boys.

Also, you don't have to buy the $100 HDMI cables for your 3D TV. The $5 ones work just as well.
