"Cell Standby Issue" is it hardware?

Even having VoLTE disabled the cell standby is quite high on the devices I've used. Wifi scanning off. NFC off. There just has to be something software wise that's killing it. I'm at 75% now with 10% standby. Can only imagine what my battery life would be like without it. It's not terrible now, but its certainly not good.

Turning wifi completely off is not an option as I'm on a 2GB data plan.

It may have to do with your carrier. I'm on T-Mobile and the cell standby for 2 weeks has not been an issue.

I'm doing an extended test. I have had wifi off for a complete day so far at home and work and cell stand by has dissapeared from the battery use list.

Before that I had it on at work and home then went down to just home. I was using about 28% on standby when using it on in both locations. That dropped to about 13% when only sitting at home. Now down to 0% totally off.

There is one more setting and that is for location. However if I turn that off I figure I just created a dumb phone that can't tell me jack so I haven't gone there.

I think you may have uncovered the largest piece of your cell standby issue. If you have location on all the time, that will certainly help the cause. I keep it off unless I need it for maps or yelp, but having lived in NYC for 8 years, I don't have much use for maps or really anything location based. I've had my phone off the charger since 9am, I've taken calls been on wifi, sent texts, listened to music, sent emails and only lost 8%.

what carrier are you on?

I just don't understand this. Some days I have 30-40% cell standby by the time I charge up and today and I only had 17%. My schedule is similar all week long too, I'm a college student so I walk the same paths (location) and charge at the same times. Settings remain all the same too. Weird... Granted this is only my 4th charge cycle, I'm hoping it just gets better from this point on.

Just found out my HTC M8 on Android L has a 32% cell standby and it's nearly about to die. I'm convinced it's not hardware, and it's purely software now. Hopefully a fix is incoming.

My suspicion as well. There are too many phone brands with the same Cell standby issue...just look in the other Forums. It's Lollipop related. The really perplexing thing to me, though, is why it affects some phones but not others!

I think it also has to do with the settings people have. I think some people only have some of the settings switched off. On my phone I have just messed with the wifi portion and shut most of it off and only turn on the wifi at home but will also be starting at work. Those locations I do think car because I can always grab a charger.

I do have so.ething with location on as it is looking for a location as soon as I go some place. However I don't see cell stand by on with that.

Mine is on verizon. If that all matters.

I haven't seen it at all the past couple of days and here's what I think is causing it.

Literally, lack of cell reception. I've known that looking for reception when you have none can drain a battery, but I guess I didn't put the two together until now.

I spend 2 days a week in an old missile building facility (my university bought it from TI). There is hardly any reception.

On the first day last week, I had the reception on, cell standy by 30%. On the second day, I turned it off and there was none. For the last 2 hours, I turned it on and towards the end, I noticed cell standy at like 4%. I never see it anymore and usually always keep wifi on. I never had location on those 2 days and normally don't. I'd assume a low/no reception + location will only make it way worse. I'm going to keep location on all day and see if I get any cell standby.

Does anyone else think it could be because of a bad reception?

Sadly that's not the case for me. I consistently have 4+ bars and have have around 30% standby on both my Android L devices.

I'd just like to step in and ask is this cell standby issue really hurting as much battery as we think it is? And if so, how much better can this battery life get once it's remedied, because I gotta be honest my battery life has been pretty great since I got the edge. The regular s6 battery life was dreadful, but it's a different story all together with the edge for some reason, yet my cell standby percentage is quite high. This is what I got since last charge:

5 hour SOT is quite good. I'm getting around 4 myself with around the same cell standby as you. If/when there is a cell standby fix I'm hoping that SOT will increase.

I think it's hurting my battery quite a bit. If I use gsam battery monitor it says around 30-40% of my drain comes from wifi.

This is the first time I've seen cell standby at almost 50% ... That's exceptionally high. When/if this gets fixed, I'm really hoping for about an extra 6-12 hours off the charger, that'd be fantastic. But I'm happy with where battery life is now as it is. Sucks not everybody can say the same though. Too many people missing out on enjoying a terrific phone due to this issue.

I will say, unlike when I had the s6, right when I got the edge I did a factory reset and disabled a bunch of apps first thing before I restored everything from the backup I made from the s6, and did the other battery saving tricks mentioned previously, with the exception of keeping my screen brightness down low. I usually keep it on auto most of the time. Idk, maybe I just got lucky with a good phone this time around, and unlucky initially with the regular s6 I traded in.

That's crazy that it's so high yet the battery is fine. For me, before cell standby stopped showing up for me it was absolutely rediculus. I could physically see the battery melt down, even with low screen settings.

Don't know why your battery is fine with the standby issue, but yes, it is a very noticeable difference. I was worried I would have to charge my phone fully twice a day. Now with above normal usage, I'm pretty confident I can get it to last at least a day without worry.

I haven't seen cell standby at all to be honest. But I've set my phone up, most likely, very different that most people. I always use power saving mode and wifi is on always when it's available, which is about 90% of the time. I also disabled VoLTE and I don't really ever use location unless I'm on yelp or use maps. I usually go at least 3 hours before my battery drops below 90%. I've ruled out wifi entirely because I have it on literally all day and night.

First full day with my edge today. Battery life has been quite solid with minimal usage. At 9+ hours off the charger, I'm sitting at 70%. According to GSam, though, WiFi Active is accounting for over 30% of that. I've had my wifi on and connected while home, and off for several hours while shopping this afternoon/evening. "Cell standby" is at 6% in the stock Galaxy battery center, but the WiFi and phone radio (12%) numbers are higher than I was used to on my S4.

Even with cell standby I get solid battery life

I'm starting to think that even though cell standby and android system are showing high I'm still getting solid battery life. Sitting around 60% right now with already over 2 hours of screen time. I've left WiFi on all day, I'll test tomorrow with WiFi off all day and see what happens. Overall I have zero regrets getting this phone.

Performance since last full charge. Cell standby at all time high for me... still getting stellar batter life. Can only get better from here folks ;-)
