Charging takes a very long time after upgrading to KitKat

Now that you have indicator app, start swapping around chargers and cords and see what results you get (be sure to document combinations) ... Only problem is with your app is it does not measure voltage also.... Current (amperage) is relevant to voltage...

Thanks, that shows both current and voltage. When I plug my tablet into the Samsung 5.3V/2.0A charger, the battery monitor widget shows that I'm getting 3.9V and 300mA. That doesn't seem right at all. I tried a shorter but thinner micro USB cable and it showed 3.7V and 308mA.

Could cable loss/resistance really account for this much of a drop? What voltage should I expect to see at the tablet with a decent cable and a 5.3V charger?

Does it look like my charger is defective?

Thanks,

If I might add my two cents as I work for Samsung :) You must notice your cord should be 3 feet for the Note tablet, all phones come with 5 ft cords. The length is VERY important to how fast the device charges and how long it takes those amps to reach the device. Make sure you are using a cable 3 feet in length If you want optimal charging for your device. I now mark all of my chargers and cords so I do not get them mixed up. FYI your phone on a tab charger pack or cord will charge incredibly quick but I don't recommend it as you can burn the battery.

Since you work for Sammy maybe you can tell me why my fully charged note 3 gets hot using the stock charge yet stays cool on a generic usb 2 charger? I leave phone plugged in at night to charge so I'm not going to wake up to unplug phone when fully charged. I find it annoying that a cheap generic charger is safer left plugged in than oem cable. Imo phone should not get hot plugged into a charger when phone is sleeping.

Yes cable loss and use of incorrect transformer (wall wart) can account for drops you experience, it is what I was trying to explain earlier why the need to use proper charger and proper cable designed for unit... Only thing I question is actual values app may be displaying... Also the science behind the measurements (Ohms law) dictates as voltage goes up, current flow goes down as long as load (battery) is a constant...

Would bet if you loaded 5 different apps, you will get 5 different sets of numbers....

So how do I get a replacement charger or cord? Even looking at the Samsung site, the charger recommended as an accessory for this tablet seems to be the wrong one (it is black and says it is the 11-pin model).

All the sales lit I can find on these chargers show the amperage (2.0A), but not the voltage - as I understand it, this tablet requires the 5.3V charger rather than the 5.0V one.

How do I get these?

Thanks,

Here is what I found online but I know some of the Samsung stores in BestBuy carry the chargers but for much more. The cord does not really matter too much as long as it is 3' or less like I previously stated. About the 5.3 V that always drops to 5.0 anyway as a safety precaution no matter the charger. You can read about that in xda forums too if you need more info.

While i work sales and marketing I will give your technical issue a shot. First i will point out the obvious the generic does not heat up bc of the usb 2.0 cord, it allows less voltage to be carried to the device. Might I ask are the cords the same in length?
I have very little to go off of so I would say try charging it off with the oem cord and see if that makes a diff. You would be surprised at how busy your phone is all night while you are sleeping, this of course depends on your apps. Everything from app updates, synching accounts, back ups, background apps, wifi, BT, and cell antennas running.
Give this a shot turn off bluetooth and wifi, put device in power saving mode before bed, choose to limit the cpu. You might even benefit from in to the recovery mode and wishing the cache partition clean. Hope this helps.

The generic cord is a little shorter than the white Samsung usb 3 oem cord. Both charge the battery however the Sammy cord is much faster. I like my phone fully on because I have settings for specific emergency contacts that will make alert sound even with other sounds off. I clear phone cache weekly.

Only the Sammy cord/charger make my phone hot when screen is off and phone is fully charged. Regardless of the excuse it is unacceptable in my mind. The charger should automatically reduce to a trickle at 100%.

Fortunately the cheap 2.0 charger solves the problem. Phone charges to 100% but never gets hot. Even in airplane mode sammy charger makes phone hot but only after phone is 100% charged.

Interesting that the top-level description for that part read 5.3V but when you read the item description, it says 5.0V.
At that price, I have to wonder if it is authentic. I've read a lot of comments from people who have received knock-offs and been very disappointed. I guess the design of these Samsung products makes them very finicky.

You say the voltage doesn't matter, while others have said it does. You didn't reference any specific XDA forum post, so I guess I'll just search for them.

Did not ever say voltage does not matter....... Always stated use 5.3 volt charger.... All I stated was as voltage goes up current goes down, when load is constant...

Dale,

I understand Ohm's law. I was not referring to you. In fact, I quoted SAMmarked1 who said "About the 5.3 V that always drops to 5.0 anyway as a safety precaution no matter the charger.".

However, I would expect any reasonably designed device to have some tolerance to voltages and regulate the incoming voltage down to what is actually needed. I also know that most modern batteries charge using a constant current method, wherein the current delivered to the battery is monitored and adjusted as necessary to bring the battery to full charge.

What this charger (or the electronics within the tablet) does I can only speculate, which is why I'm asking questions here.

Could your 3.0 cord maybe have a short? That would explain why it continues to get hot.

I also have the note 10.1 2014 that no longer charges after the kit Kat update. It's ridiculous to claim you need a specific cable and length to charge your device because of a software update. My guess is Samsung attempted to fix the issue with the USB noise interfering with the digitizer, and bricked it.

Personally, I'm glad this update has killed my note 10.1. I'm looking forward to trying the Asus padphone. Bought the At&t note 12.2 not realizing At&t had crippled the phone app. So I got the note 10.1 which still makes calls. note 10.1 has been very disappointing. Both the 10.1 and 12.2 have crappy digitizers. I can't use either one for any real work. Erratic cursor behavior as it reads random places on the screen. I've tried every possible combo of cable, charger, etc. If that's what samsung considers acceptable then it's more evidence for me to try another vendor.
Just now getting the KitKat update is embarrassing. This thing isn't even a year old. Probably my last Samsung device.

All Samsungs new chargers are white color and just old ones are black. So the black one u got is wrong and u need 5.3V/2A one for faster charging and it also depends on quality/length of microusb charging cable.

This helps. It is bad that the T-Mobile tablet comes with a black charger. I bought the tablet a few months ago.
