Charging works intermittently

I usually charge my phone at night so that it's fully charged when I wake up. However, sometimes the charger shows that it's connected and the red charging light goes on, but the battery percentage remains constant. I don't know what's causing it. I have fast charging on due to slow charging taking many hours to charge. Could that be a factor? I also use the original Samsung charger, if that affects it.

Check the connections on both the cable (both ends) and phone... is it loose or damaged? Does it wiggle a bit? Micro USB is notorious for loosening up a bit and leaving a flaky connection. It could be wonky just enough to allow for it to charge, but not fully enough connected to allow for the full fast charge.

The cord is a little split, but no wires are showing. I usually just have to reinsert the charger, and it will charge fine.

I would say it's your cord. If the coating is split that's never a good thing.

If you see any sort of damage on the cable, especially near the brick, no matter how superficial it might look, replace. It could have stretched a bit, frayed, etc.
