Clockworkmod Recovery

So could someone explain what odin is and why I need to use that rather than just downloading rom manager and flashing clockwork? Also what is double flashing as someone mentioned earlier. Thanks in advance!

You have to use Odin in order to flash CWM. You can't just install it via ROM Manager (even though it gives the option)

Help

Don't know what I did wrong, followed all the instructions but the phone would never reboot. I unplugged the phone and put in the battery and now after the splash screen I get

Android system recovery <2e>

Samsung Recovery Utils
-for BML-

reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition

#MANUAL MODE#

What should I do????

Which part of the instructions are you on? If you've rebooted into recovery (which is what that menu is, it's the stock recovery) you can try applying update.zip, and if all was installed correctly you should see CWM recovery (green text menu). Then you're done.

The very first parts..

1 - Load odin (make sure it detects your device. You should get one yellow "Com" port box). (You should obviously have the USB cable connected by now.)
2 - apply .tar file via odin (use the PDA box) - link below (CWM recovery) (DO NOT EVER, EVER USE THE PHONE BOX!)

After I checked "PDA" and clicked start their was a green box in the top left of the screen that said "Pass! 0:9" but the phone never rebooted. I waited about 15 minuets, should I have waited longer?

No, it should reboot almost immediately after flashing is done, no more than 90 seconds max, from when you hit start and when it's done flashing. I'd try reflashing once more, unless you have tested and confirmed you have CWM recovery working?

No, I haven't tested for CWM, I was too chicken. So what should I do first test for CWM or try flashing again? Sorry for noob questions, I just don't want to screw up my phone anymore than I already have.

I just tried this for the first time after rooting a couple of weeks ago and everything worked like a charm! All I have to say to anyone considering it is make sure you read the whole thread and make sure you fully understand what you are doing before you try.

If you follow the directions on the FIRST PAGE, you should be golden. If you get lost in a step or don't fully understand it, check out the rest of the thread as there are some valuable clarifications along the way.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed!

I got it! In the end it was actually pretty straight forward. Most of the difficulty I had was in making sure I understood what was actually happening. The original post should include some of the questions repeated in the thread plus some screenshots if possible.

Hi All,

I'm having a problem with my recovery menu. I had clockwork mod installed and working fine about a month ago. Yesterday, I tried to boot into recovery and I had some error messages and wouldn't let me into the menu. The messages are as follows:

E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
(Invalid argument)

-- Install from package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.

After this I try to 'apply sdcard:update zip' and I get the same message

-- Install from package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

what is Odin?

edit: Ok, I found it for Captivate, but is there a Fascinate version?

Yes there is a Fascinate ver. and it's in this thread. I think it's in namebrandon's first post, and possible a few others. Just go back some pages and look through the post's. That's how i found it.

If you've flashed a kernel other than stock (that has the modified recovery binary), then this is probably due to the update.zip on your SD card not being correct. You have to have at least flashed the initial CWM kernel via Odin. If you have done this, then in the ROM Manager application choose "Flash Clockworkmod recovery", and then try again once it's completed.

Maybe this has been answered, but will the ROM Manager app reboot anyone else's phone itself or do you have to manually boot to recovery mode?

I still have the stock kernel. I tried flashing with rom manager. Still same thing.

It does it for you. One of the first options in the menu

Right. I should have been more specific in my last post. ROM Manager would not automatically reboot into recovery when selecting the option or after downloading a ROM. CWM has been initially flashed via Odin. I found that the function works after fixing permissions.

I was just thinking this was another quirk of the Galaxy phones.

That's because you have the stock kernel. This is why you use Odin to flash the CWMrecovery kernel. Then everything works. It's all in the steps to follow.. :)
