Compilation of RANDOM REBOOTING issue - advanced users, please read and help.

same here, when the phone tries to get a GPS signal, it'll reboot 1-2 seconds later. turning it off fixes the problem.

some people said to check "always mobile data on", well i checked it and unchecked it, happens both ways.

has anyone found a fix for this yet, or is getting a new phone a solution?

Happened to me when i first got my EVO. Google Maps and Sprint Nav would both crash the phone. A factory reset fixed the problem....

Re: Evo Random Reboot?

Interesting because my phone has never rebooted on its own. My wifes has done it three times since she got hers on June 9th. Each time she was in the car and the car was very hot. She had never used the phones navigation since her car has built in navigation.

I used navigation once and did get a phone call during the drive, but the phone did not reboot.

It is interesting that this and the other thread about reboots have gone almost quiet since the update.

Update your apps!

You guys having problems with navigation causing a reboot, make sure to check the apps for updates. My gf's Evo was having this problem so we took it in to Sprint. Turns out there were updates for Google Maps and Sprint Navigation that she had ignored. Apparently something wasn't playing nice with HTC's latest OTA update. She hasn't had any reboots since updating the apps.

Out of date apps isn't the problem. Everything updated. I'm going to uninstall all my apps and I'd that doesn't work try a factory reset.

When you root phones, you will always have more problems like this. I haven't had this happen to my stock EVO. I don't have time to go through erasing my phone that much.

Seems to be a common issue now with the Hero as well and the most recent updates. Mine doesn't do that with ROMs based off of the first 2 versions of 2.1 update-1, but they do with the ones based off of the latest release. It was pissing me off so much, I flashed Froyo until I find a ROM i feel I can live with until the Epic comes out.

who said this was a result of rooting a phone? -_- i'm bone stock with the two official updates.

I had this same exact problem with my EVO. My EVO was NOT rooted and this problem happened before and after the update.I was about to exchange it however I fiddled with some settings and cured it.

I turned off sync for News, stocks, google calendar, and facebook live feed.

Everything else I reduced the frequency of syncs.

Signed out of Google Talk and disabled auto sign in.

Not only has my battery life improved significantly but I have not had a single restart since.

Hopefully this helps out and solves some issues.

EDIT: spelling

No random reboots for me since the last OTA update. I only had the reboots on one of two EVO phones. Not one has occurred since the update. For me, the reboots seem to have been related to MASSIVE background data xfer on the Sprint network, prior to the update.

I used the free Network Monitor app to monitor data usage on the rebooting phone since I didn't believe the data usage statistics on Sprint's website, which was indicated around 1GB of usage per day (yes, per day!!) prior to that update.

Killing apps individidually, I still couldn't identify the culprit (facebook, gmail, who knows...)...Normally, I don't use any app killer on either phone. I just used System Panel Lite to try and kill apps while the realtime Network Monitor showed me sometimes an hour or two straight of high network bandwidth usage when I wasn't doing anything. My personal opinion is that it wasn't any particular app, but possibly the 3G radio itself in some almost endless data xfer loop. No way to know for sure, except that killing apps like Gmail, Facebook, and other "autosyncing" apps had no affect on the realtime data xfer I could see with Network Monitor.

Then, after the OTA, the massive data usage just went away (now at maybe 10MB per day with my same pattern of usage), along with the random reboots...Haven't seen even one since.

Interstingly, Sprint tech support tried to convince me that the HUGE data xfer numbers both I and they could was "normal"...Of course I knew it wasn't since second phone didn't have HUGE bandwidth usage numbers, and it never once reboot on its own. And, ovbisouly, if every EVO user was actually using 1GB per day the network itself would be brought to its knees.

did a factory reset and everything's fixed, for now. i also went ahead and did a hard reset to see what it was like as well.

My phone was also rebooting whenever I tried to use GPS with SprintNav or Google Maps. I did notice that my SprintNav app needed to be updated so I installed the update but that didn't fix the issue. I've never rooted and have had the 'Always on mobile' checked for the past week or so. I decided to try the factory reset but noticed that when I removed my sd card and turned my phone back on, the GPS was working without any issues. So I turned the phone back off, put my sd card back in and booted up again and so far so good. I'm able to use the GPS with both SprintNav and Google Maps without any issue.

Oh the only other thing I tried based on other posts was removing TuneWiki and removing the Mobile widget. Doing these things didn't seem to help but now that everything is working, I'm hesitant to add them back.

Anyway, if anyone else is having the same GPS issue, maybe try removing the sd card and see if the issue goes away. If so, add it back and keep your fingers crossed. It's worth a try before doing the factory reset.

Update 7/13/2010: So a day later and the problem returned. I did the factory reset so I'm hoping that's the end of my gps woes.

Mine is rebooting a couple of times a day. Always when I play a "tower defense" game, also has happened regularly when viewing u-tube or u-stream. Has happened once when accessing google nav ap, and sometimes it is just sitting there and reboots. I don't have a task killer, data is always on, and sometimes it gets caught in a rebooting loop and I have to take the battery out for a minute or two. I just sent Htc an e-mail about the problem and will let you all know what they say.

Still happening

Got a reply from HTC and they said to do a hard reset. Did that and it got better, but still rebooted some. I have started reinstalling some app and I got to Dogcatcher and it go worse and then to Appbrain and now it is unusable.
Will probably take it back to sprint and see what they can do for me.

Random reboots

I too have only noticed them when on phone calls. I've probably noticed about 8 in the month I've had my phone. I can't say if it's rebooting in my pocket and I'm just not hearing it. I have had it reboot on and off the charger and with WiFi on and off.

my Evo went CRAZY today, but now its fine

It was the weirdest thing, today at around 4pm my Eco started rebooting constantly, again and again, each time only staying on for 1 minute before restarting again. I tried everything I could think of, turned off the wireless, gps, 4g, uninstalled everything recent, nothing helped.

So I took the battery out, and let it sit there for 20 minutes. Now everything is fine!

Running the latest Baked Snack ...

Happened to me running baked snack also. I did a couple battery pulls and haven't had the issue in 3 days.

Battery Temp > 105 and Redlined Processsor = Reboot

After doing some digging, I have compiled a list of thoughts on the random rebooting (Or more accurately, "power cycling") issue:

Many users (myself included) have noticed that rebooting stops when plugged in to a charger.

Reboots can and DO HAPPEN during phone calls - when they happen, you can continue to hear the other caller all the way up to the 4g screen.

I have been in a very strong signal area and a very weak signal area when these reboots have occurred, I also have never had less than 75% battery when they do. (coincidence.. I'm rarely "unplugged" with this phone until my spare batteries arrive)

13 out of 14 reboots were when I wasn't even near the phone. I didn't move it (there have been posts related to whether or not it's related to an accelerometer issue)

Many users have related the issue to "Always on" data setting. There is NOTHING to back this up, from what I've read (but I'm game, I'm trying it right now) - and I've seen many posts that seem to be a simple coincidence with checking/unchecking this option causing/fixing the random reboots. I, personally, had the "Always on" unchecked since the day I got the phone and after 9 days, I started getting the random reboots. I had 14 yesterday in a 3 hour period of time. Once I plugged in to power, they stopped. Today, they started again (at almost the same time of day) - which I find interesting. I'm wondering if there's something the phone is attempting at a certain time of day, that's causing this.

A user on the HTC forum posted the following:
This could be the issue:
"The HTC Evo could have a serious defect in the included storage department.
Evo user, MG Siegler, has been using this device ever since Google handed them out to attendees at this years Google I/O. The rumored defect is that the 8gb microSD card that ships with this device, randomly stops working and would then appear corrupt or empty. While a simple reboot would fix this issue temporarily, the problem would happen again. Siegler stated that it all started occurring on day 2 of using this device and has almost everyday since he has been heavily testing , and using the phone as a camera, camcorder, browser, and other features."

Many users have attempted restoring the phone to factory and have had good results "for a few days". My concern is that this is app or software related, and those users are simply reinstalling the same problem-causing apps, therefore, not seeing a true result of a factory reset.

Some users have mentioned and questioned the use of GPS or Google MAPS with relation to these reboots. (Incidentally, after a random reboot, I checked the apps that were running on my device, and MAPS was running although I hadn't started it for days)

Many users have rooted their devices or have task killers installed. I have not rooted my phone and I do not run a task killer, HOWEVER, I did have "Quick System Info" installed which included a task killer. I uninstalled it on day 3 because of the information I read here. I also had a power cycle that day (5 times in a row, I thought it was in a loop) - so I uninstalled it immediately. I wouldn't consider a rooted phone or a phone with task killers installed, to be a good judge of what's causing these power cycles since those two activities seem to be risky anyway. (JMHO!)

Anyone want to add to this, or better yet - can someone please recommend a fix? I hope I've been thorough in the findings - I'm kind of tired of reading all of these posts about this issue! I come from a Tour (which was REBOOT HELL) and I was REALLY hoping to not have to deal with that anymore, but I'm right back where I was - no matter how cool the phone is, it does me NO GOOD if it's constantly resetting itself.

Thanks in advance all you Android freaks!

Thanks for the comprehensive post. As near as I can tell, all my reboot loops have occurred in an environment where two things happen:

1. The phone's processor redlines due to multiple apps running simultaneously;and
2. The battery temp exceeds 105 degrees.

It could very welll be related to the memory card, since the card is located directly underneath the battery and flash memory can malfunction at higher temperatures.

My phone has never been rooted and my "Always On Data" has always been checked. I have performed a factory reset following Froyo update and still had a reboot loop yesterday while charging the phone in a hot car.
