After doing some digging, I have compiled a list of thoughts on the random rebooting (Or more accurately, "power cycling") issue:
Many users (myself included) have noticed that rebooting stops when plugged in to a charger.
Reboots can and DO HAPPEN during phone calls - when they happen, you can continue to hear the other caller all the way up to the 4g screen.
I have been in a very strong signal area and a very weak signal area when these reboots have occurred, I also have never had less than 75% battery when they do. (coincidence.. I'm rarely "unplugged" with this phone until my spare batteries arrive)
13 out of 14 reboots were when I wasn't even near the phone. I didn't move it (there have been posts related to whether or not it's related to an accelerometer issue)
Many users have related the issue to "Always on" data setting. There is NOTHING to back this up, from what I've read (but I'm game, I'm trying it right now) - and I've seen many posts that seem to be a simple coincidence with checking/unchecking this option causing/fixing the random reboots. I, personally, had the "Always on" unchecked since the day I got the phone and after 9 days, I started getting the random reboots. I had 14 yesterday in a 3 hour period of time. Once I plugged in to power, they stopped. Today, they started again (at almost the same time of day) - which I find interesting. I'm wondering if there's something the phone is attempting at a certain time of day, that's causing this.
A user on the HTC forum posted the following:
This could be the issue:
"The HTC Evo could have a serious defect in the included storage department.
Evo user, MG Siegler, has been using this device ever since Google handed them out to attendees at this years Google I/O. The rumored defect is that the 8gb microSD card that ships with this device, randomly stops working and would then appear corrupt or empty. While a simple reboot would fix this issue temporarily, the problem would happen again. Siegler stated that it all started occurring on day 2 of using this device and has almost everyday since he has been heavily testing , and using the phone as a camera, camcorder, browser, and other features."
Many users have attempted restoring the phone to factory and have had good results "for a few days". My concern is that this is app or software related, and those users are simply reinstalling the same problem-causing apps, therefore, not seeing a true result of a factory reset.
Some users have mentioned and questioned the use of GPS or Google MAPS with relation to these reboots. (Incidentally, after a random reboot, I checked the apps that were running on my device, and MAPS was running although I hadn't started it for days)
Many users have rooted their devices or have task killers installed. I have not rooted my phone and I do not run a task killer, HOWEVER, I did have "Quick System Info" installed which included a task killer. I uninstalled it on day 3 because of the information I read here. I also had a power cycle that day (5 times in a row, I thought it was in a loop) - so I uninstalled it immediately. I wouldn't consider a rooted phone or a phone with task killers installed, to be a good judge of what's causing these power cycles since those two activities seem to be risky anyway. (JMHO!)
Anyone want to add to this, or better yet - can someone please recommend a fix? I hope I've been thorough in the findings - I'm kind of tired of reading all of these posts about this issue! I come from a Tour (which was REBOOT HELL) and I was REALLY hoping to not have to deal with that anymore, but I'm right back where I was - no matter how cool the phone is, it does me NO GOOD if it's constantly resetting itself.
Thanks in advance all you Android freaks!
