Computer thinks SD Card is CD ROM Drive

Hi,

I just got an Incredible, and love it, except that my computer won't recognize either the phone itself or the SD card as drives.

When I plug the phone in, I get the standard options (charge, sync, use as drive, and use as modem). If I select Use as Drive, the phone shows up in My Computer as a CD Rom drive.

I've done some digging and found this trouble-shooting action:

dial ##7764726
Hit Call
Type Password 000000 (that's 6 zeros)
Hit Feature Settings
Choose CD ROM
Click Disable
Hit menu, commit modifications (it will say no item changed)

I've done this (multiple times), but it hasn't helped, though at least it doesn't try to start VCast any longer. I've tried to do it with debugging enabled and without debugging enabled, but nothing seems to work.

The SD card functions for apps, etc., so it's not a defective card, as far as I can tell.

Any suggestions?

The usb debugging box might be enabled. Go to menu>settings>applications>development, if the usb debugging box is checked, uncheck it, then try to hook the phone back up and see if your computer recognizes it. Hope this solves your issue.

If only it were that simple. USB Debugging is not enabled. When it is enabled, I don't see anything at all in My Computer. When it's not, I just see the CD ROM drive.

Thanks for the response, though...

See if these instructions work:

On my computer (Windows XP), I right clicked on the CD drive (your SD card) and selected properties. then select hardware. you will see a list that should have a couple HTC Android Phone USB Device options. I had two that said Disk Drives and one that said DVD/CD ROM Drives. I selected the HTC Android Phone USB Device that was a DVD/CD ROM drive and clicked properties. at the bottom you will see a drop down box for Device Usage: select "Do not use this device (disable). then click OK all the way back out and you should now have access to your SD card.

I have Windows 7, so the interface is a little different. Here's what I did, though:

I selected:

"HTC Android Phone USB Device" (type DVD/CD). I clicked on Properties. This opened another dialog box with 4 tabs. On the general tab, I clicked "Change Settings." That took me to another window where I could disable the device, so I did.

I "OK'ed" my way out, tried to reconnect my phone as a Disk Drive, and got nothing, not even the CD icon anymore.

When you plug the phone up does it ask what usb connection type you want(in the notification bar)?
If so, select mount as disk drive. If that's not it, try power then phone off then back on.

Yes, it gives me the choice of Charge, HTC Sync, Disk Drive, or Mobile Broadband Connect. I've been selecting Disk Drive each time. And I've powered off and on more times than I can count at this point... :/

Make sure that your usb ports are working on your computer (maybe try a flash drive), and if that doesn't work try a factory reset on the phone.

Un-checking the Debugging check box worked for me - Thanks!

The usb debugging box might be enabled. Go to menu>settings>applications>development, if the usb debugging box is checked, uncheck it, then try to hook the phone back up and see if your computer recognizes it.

I have an HTC Incredible and this problem stymied me for months - until today.

I tried adamm_44 's fix of disabling the DVD/CD-ROM device hardware type under Start > Devices and Printers > Android Phone > Right click Properties > Hardware tab (on my Windows 7 PC). Like for seattlecubsfan, this made the CD drive icon disappear, but the phone SD Card still did not appear as a removable drive.

In the Device Functions section of the same Hardware tab described above, I noticed two items titled "HTC Android Phone USB Device" with type "Disk drives", and two other items titled "F:/" and "G:/". This gave me a hint that my computer was trying to map the HTC SD Card to the F: and G: drives. However, those two drive letters were already occupied on my machine by two office network drives!

To solve the problem, with my HTC Incredible still hooked up to my PC (as a disk drive), I simply disconnected from my office network (by unplugging my Ethernet cable). This caused my F: and G: drives to appear disconnected (red X symbol) in Windows Explorer. However, when I clicked on those drives in Explorer, the contents of my SD Card magically appeared! The problem was that my HTC phone storage was mapping to drive letters already taken.

I'm not sure if this is your problem, but thought I'd share as this problem has been bugging me for a long time and I was sick of having to e-mail myself photos to get them off of my phone.
