There was a lot of discussion recently about photos at a concert, with very difficult lighting. I was at my first concert since then, so I thought I would post my experiments.

(Both photos are zoomed way in.)

Without any adjustments:

You can see the same washed out brightness the person in the other thread was mentioning.

With drastically reduced exposure and increased white balance temperature:

Things are looking much better, with mostly realistic colours and brightness.

I know the guy was a little disappointed but honestly he couldce gotten great results in manual mode no doubt. I can almost guarantee that I could've been stamding right next to him and had highly improved shots over the ones he posted but to each his own.

I agree that not everything works out in auto. Its better in dedicated cameras because they have multiple auto settings. They have auto that lets the camera decide much like a cell camera. Then they have auto aperture priority, auto shutter priority and auto with different scene modes. There is no size fits all.

The V20 tends to overexpose a bit which can easily be adjusted however I can live with most of what it does in auto.

Seems beaten to death already. V20 is great manual shooter, but mediocre tap and shooter.

I've seen a lot of great shots here in auto. Does it get everything right? Of course not.... All auto shooting settings have their weaknesses. Are there phones that take better shots in auto?.... Yes according too many.
It all depends on what your expectations are. I bought the V20 for the total package. In spite of the fact that I bought it primarily for other reasons, the camera was a factor and it performs very well. Its not for everyone but its get a lot of things right and pushes all the right buttons for a lot of people here and there.

Since inevitably every time someone focuses a problem with a pic, someone post a completely unrelated photo to "discount" the issue (a woman outside i dress? How many times does it need proven in some circumstances it takes great pics?

My concert issue was the v20 handling difficult lighting. And ive used the g4 manual, so im not a stranger to manual mode. I achieved very good results on the G4. Average to bad on the V20. My issue stemmed from the (in my eyes) reduced sensor that cant handle the shots the G4 did with ease.

So ill summarize again... The v20 camera is fine for most. Its been proven. It doesn't work as well as the G4 does and standing next to me at the same shows using the same manual modes i use doesn't guarantee you better shots. It doesn't take a master's degree to work it, its not that hard. So its slightly insulting implying how incapable i am to properly use manual

I'm not talking about your initial post. Mine was in regards to the guy that said the V20 doesn't have good auto shots.

These are from back stage at a POD concert. They are ok. Didn't try very hard.. just whipped the phone out, took two and stuck my phone back in my pocket.

So apparently your level of skill in using the manual mode far outweighs my feeble abilities, although ive gotten amazing shots using manual before with other cameras, i guess im just too dense to figure out this really complicated method of using the same.exact feature on the V20?

Goodness, loving a phone is fine. Being obnoxious and honestly thinking whatever is good for you HAS to be for everyone else as well, its silly. I can see why people stop posting in here when they have the slightest negative thing to say about a feature. Its as if some cant accept their wonderful phone might not be the same for the entire universe.

But to each his own...

Took both this weekend. Manual and auto. Wasnt impressed either way. Used another phone, same settings, and got clearer shots. So, it is what it is. I can't see why its the end of the world proving me wrong. But its ok.

The first two photos in this thread, cant say overly impressed with either. The first is obviously washed out, but even the second "good" shot with improved colors still seems quite washed out (esp the girl) and the typical oil painting effect

My shots (the first post) were not meant to be perfections, just an experiment in a lighting situation similar to yours.

My findings were interesting (to me, anyways) that a combination of exposure and white balance seemed to improve things a lot.

(Note: both photos are very zoomed in, so quality took a big hit right from the start.)

I agree that this phone's sensor doesn't handle this light well, while the g4 handled it better.

I would also say that I've seen similar washed out photos (on Facebook from friends who go to the same performances as me) from other phones - I'm just glad that I have the ability to easily improve things using manual controls.

In the meantime, I think we should just drop the whole thing. (When I get to my computer I'm going to notify the moderators.) This forum has rules about respecting each other, and it generally leads to high quality threads.

Ok you are very correct. I have strong opinions about what the V20 can do so I over defend it sometimes. It is not my intention to discourage you or look down on you based on the pictures you submitted. I just find it so hard to believe that the drop off in image quality between the G4 and V20 is that wide. So I certainly went overboard, way overboard and your experience and results are to be respected as your own. Please don't stop sharing on my account. Sincere apologies from me Jamie.

If I may ask, can you show us the pics from the other phone?

I had the G4 and I really enjoyed that camera.

No, its more than ok. Apology accepted, but not needed :)

My issue from the start, and im seeing a pattern...is the heavy concert lights. A few of my past poor examples were purple and blue, and this weekend was again a heavy blue concert light as seen from the examples above I think the combo of the colored lights and a bright spotlight in a dark concert hall throw the sensor off, where it hadnt in the past. That was my main and only frustration. All else works fine and it does get great shots, its this small issue that I have, which in the end isnt a big deal. I thought it was put to bed last thread, and sort of saw this as reopening it again as...look, there is nothing wrong with concert v20 photos, that guy must be dumb" lol, and i got a bit defensive. So i too offer apologies for going off topic
