Confirmed, we have the worst still camera...

This thread is funny. OP posts actual proof that the Evo 3D has a lower quality camera (note that I didn't say BAD, I said lower quality) than most current smartphones, and the forum blows up. Does the Evo 3D take decent pictures? Yes, but only in certain circumstances. Smartphones are supposed to be the kind of phone that you have on you 24/7 and therefore used in that split-second moment where you don't have time for adjusting settings. And what about that green tint thing? Where are the settings to fix that? HTC had to release an OTA update a month and a half later that fixed it for some, but for many like myself still had the blasted green tint issue, something that you couldn't fix with any settings on the phone.

Indoors and low lighting for many are conditions in which many people take pictures with their smart phones. It's not unreasonable for someone to expect that their camera perform better in conditions where they take pictures the most often in. It's also infuriating when other cameras are much more well-rounded in terms of quality conditions when this phone is supposed to be one of the best phones released to date. The Evo 3D has beastly internals only to be short-handed with a lower quality camera that was supposed to be the main selling point for the phone. Someone post some good quality indoor, lowlighting pictures and I might change my mind.

I switched to the Epic 4g Touch and the quality is noticeable. Hardly any graininess, colors are crisp and clear. I loved the Evo but I can't stand the lag and camera quality.

I love the high resolution of the 3d. How is it going from qhd to VGA? People need to understand that adjusting settings isn't always feasible and that's where the frustration comes from.

I'll say it again, once you change the the default settings to the ones I've laid out in post #15, YOU LEAVE THEN ALONE AND NEVER TOUCH THEM.

you then only need to change something (like white balance or ISO ) if needed due to extreems.
I understand that this sounds like a pain in the rear, but you need to do the same on the SGS2 phone I checked out yesterday at the mall. do people here really think that on the SGS2 that you can keep it on full auto and default settings and never have to change this? wow, good luck with that folks.

I've followed the SGS2 phone for the last 6 months or so as it was to be my phone of choice. all the best pictures taken on that phone was due to people who understood photography and yes, changed some settings. the rest of the photos from it I like to compare to the picture taken from that bestbuy staff that sold it as new. it was soft, flat and out of focus. but the hype of the phone is so great that I'm the only one seeing it huh? yep, the best full auto you can get, the SGS2, prize winning shots in all light conditions, even in infra-red and ultra-violet or of your baby sleeping in pitch blackness.

as for the green tint issue, is a blue tint issue you'll get with many other phone cameras any better? just relook at the tests and you'll see that many of them have this issue. - this reply was more aimed at the above post and not you Vick.

trust me, I understand your frustrations Vick. I see it all the time in photoraphy forums. but the question isn't why in this day and age can't we the consumer just use our cameras on full auto, but why are we expecting the best photos when set on full auto. it's 2012, not 4012. by then our children will have camera implants in our eyes and each time we blink a photo is taken. the best part is that shooting on full auto will be fixed by then. untill then, the person behind the lens has to have some understanding of photography and be willing to make some adjustments. it's just what we real photographers had to do for the past 100 years...and without an AUTO setting on our cameras.

the answer really is that we as a people have not invented an AUTO exposure feature for any camera made today that works 100% of the time. in fact, for the most part, such full auto produces good at best on even the top cameras today. it's our expectations that are way too high.
I have also learned over the years that the default settings on our cameras (for the past 10 years or so) have to have some tweeks done to them in order for our camers to do better then what the factory set it at.

the factory also just can't tweek the settings and sell it to me...and then have everything perfect for my lighting in my house with my kids and still will work for YOU in YOUR HOUSE and with YOUR LIGHTING with YOUR KIDS.
so WE have to tweak our own cameras just a bit for OUR world. but once tweeked, you can now just leave the settings alone unless you wana shoot some "ART".

Lol, I typed the above post last night during a bout of insomnia. Just one more point and then I'm done. How many of you installed car stereos and didn't tweak the settings? How many of you just leave them as they are regardless of the type of music you are listening to (i.e. Rap vs Rock)? I don't believe I'm the only one who changes theirs. Heck, I use an equalizer on my EVO 3D to achieve the best music experience I can when listening using headphones or plugged into the cassette tape adapter in my 2001 Xterra. IMHO adjusting the camera settings is no different. Regardless of which phone you use you just aren't going to get the best results using the settings right out of the box.

OK, 'nuff said. If one feels justified in getting a different phone because it has better default settings then that is that person's prerogative. I'm done now.

I'll let you in on a little secret.
{wispers in ear} I'm lauphing my rear off because I'm on an android website that is known to have people willing to change the settings on them to such a degree and also use things like "go launcher" and custom roms. root and all that. but the same people wont change a few little adjustments on the camera located on thier phone to see if it will help them take better pictures.

maybe it's just me, but I find it funny as hell.

I agree 100% with you. There's never a blanket-sweep setting for the Evo 3D that just allows you to take excellent quality photos in virtually every common situation. The phone just wasn't meant for that kind of use. People need to accept this and move on. There are other phones geared less towards how to tweak a camera for a 3D effect and more about getting the most out of normal stills like the Epic 4g Touch.

To answer your question about the resolution, it was painful at first, a lot of icons are big, and text gets really blocky and unreadable when it's zoomed out. You get over it pretty quickly though. I personally like it since I have a hard time reading any kind of text that small anyways. Also, the viewing angles are a nice touch that I didn't think I would really come to appreciate. Playing games with the accelerometer really sucked on the Evo 3d, but on the Epic 4g Touch, I totally forgot about that frustration since I was having fun playing the game without being distracted by the colors washing out. One more negative about the phone was that it's super slick in the hands, and can easily drop if you don't hold it right. But I bought a kickstand case and a TPU case, and both do the trick without adding any bulkiness.

If you are considering the E4GT, go try one out at the store. What I did was get my friend to open an account so that I could try out the phone. Had 14 days to decide if I wanted to return it, made up my mind in 3. You get a truly fast phone, a completely sexy form factor, larger and better screen, better battery life, and an amazing camera.

As for you warpdrive, your Best Buy example is totally flawed. You can easily tell by the photo that the camera was moving while the picture was taken. Of course it's going to mess with colors when the photo is taking in mid shift between ISO balance going from his shirt to the wall. And seriously, chill the f*** out. You're not the only photographer in the whole world. The camera sucks for daily use. Deal with it. The fact that the Sensation takes drastically better pictures than the Evo 3D should say something about the 3D's camera.

Apples to oranges. You're talking about people having hours to burn in their leisure rooting and hacking and customizing at home, to people with a 30 second window to whip out their phone and take a picture of their dog doing something hilarious. You're a photographer, you should know better than anyone that the Evo 3D takes TERRIBLE pics when the subject is moving. Where's the stabilizer setting for that? Just chill out dude, it is widely known that the camera is sub par by both customer experience and with statistical studies like the one posted by the op. Maybe you have a better experience with the camera because, um, I dunno, YOU'RE A PHOTOGRAPHER? lol

I literally laughed out loud when I read your post. So true!

I took a little jaunt over to the SGS2 forum to check out camera shots posted over there and to be quite honest, I didn't see ANYTHING that is better than photos I've seen posted from an EVO 3D.

You totally missed the point. Once you change the blankety-blank settings you don't have to change them every time you take a picture. I'm by no means a photographer and I take some pretty kick butt pictures with mine. Have you looked in the 2 and 3D picture sticky in this forum? There are some great pictures in there taken by average people like me.

<D*mmit warpdrive, I said I was done...> :p

that's why Carrie who posted two great shots with such a horrable camera can do it and she's not a photographer. one of them an action shot.

yet I agree, the evo3d has a poor camera. I've never said it wasn't. but yes, a person could wip out the evo3d a take a pic of their dog doing something hilarious. Carrie proved this already. I'm not sure what your point is now?

By both you and warpdrive's own admission, you DO change settings, maybe not for EVERY single shot, but whenever your surroundings aren't optimal. By warpdrive's own words, he says he DOES change them, whenever he goes from indoors to outdoors, low light to a lot of light, etc. And like I said, show me a picture with low light that the Evo 3D can do well, and THEN I'll change my mind. Outdoor pictures are of course going to be good, I never said that you couldn't take good pictures. I'm saying comparatively to other modern 2011 smartphones, the camera doesn't compare as far as versatility goes, especially in auto default settings. I guarantee the settings you used for those really nice pics you took would destroy the quality of any picture that doesn't have moderate to low lighting. It's more you like you guys are missing the point: its perfectly okay for people to complain that auto settings on a $600 camera meant to be used quickly without much user tampering performs subjectively much worse to a mass majority of users than most other 2011 super phones. Why is that so hard to accept?

Getting tired of the circlejerking going on here. You only get liked or thanked if someone says something you want to hear. You only get praised if you praise your idol- I mean your phone. OP posted a valid article with reasonable proof. Many many users state the same frustration. In blogs, phone reviews, photographers, Android veterans, and former iPhone/Blackberry/Palm/Nokia/Evo 3D users. Just accept it. If you have found a way to make your camera work better than most other people, quit looking down your noses on people who don't get it and aren't "at your level". Disagree if you want, but the circle jerking needs to stop. This post is for both you and warpdrive.

You took my words out of context and shuffled them around. I don't appreciate that. Apples = people who have time to sit down and customize their phone. Oranges = people with 30 second windows to pull their phone out and take a photo before they miss their opportunity. Warpdrive was talking down this community for their complacency having to change settings in their camera since they are willing to spend so much time customizing the UI of their phone. Moving pictures was a vague point I was trying to make, in that settings aren't the holy grail for photo quality; there are simply some things you just can't adjust with settings. Like the green tint, or motion blur. Settings won't fix every single problem you have with the camera.

Who in the hell are you to tell me what to post? I could care less what you are getting tired of. While there are users who post their frustration, there are also many who post their satisfaction, and yet many others out there who are satisfied. This is an EVO 3D forum and there is NOTHING wrong with posting tips on how to maximize the use of your device, whether it is an app to install or settings to change. Get over yourself.

My *phone* works fantastic! My*camera* works pretty good! The premise of this thread (article posted by OP,not the OP himself) sucks!!! I read all 4 pages. Every pic in the article looks worse than pics I've taken with my E3D. Is it the best still camera, no.......Is it the worst still camera, no. :D

First of all, I didn't tell you what you could post. I said to show a little more respect and maturity. Did my post hit close to home that you have to react so rashly? You addressed not a single point, but resorted to attacking me instead. There's a difference between posting tips and then just going back and forth laughing at people who disagree with you and looking down on those who don't share the same experience. There is a simple point being made here, and all of this needless fighting is caused by the Evo 3D squad coming in to muscle out the opposing opinion. BOTTOM LINE: Evo takes good pics under optimal settings. Everything else = crap. Sorry.

I change more settings then most because I'm anal, and also know it will turn out better for me if I do so. leaving your white balance on auto will be fine too in my examples. your flash will go off if indoors, wont go off if outdoors. you will still have to change your ISO on a SGS2 in ultra low light or you'll get the same results as an evo3d, good to poor depending on your subject and your skills.
so on a SGS2 phone it will know that my subject is being back lit by the sun and she wont turn out dark? I won't have to change the exposure setting to +1 on the SGS2? really? the phone just "knows" that she is being back lit? cool, I'm running out and getting one now....yeah, right.

I should chill out when I'm giving out some damn good advice on how to take better pictures on any camera phone? really? I should chill?
I'm not looking down anyone's nose who is at least willing to understand that with any camera you need to understand the basics of photography. the more you know and understand the less you'll stop blaming a camera and look in the mirror.

we might dissagree on some things but I still think you are a great person. so here is some thanks and likes from me. :)

Fair enough, and thanks for the Thanks, lol. I don't really care about getting any but I appreciate the gesture. Anyways I'm not saying the GS2 will not need tweaking either, I know ANY camera requires some modification if you're really looking for that sweet shot. If I really want that sweet shot of that sunset, yeah I'll take my time and experiment with a couple different settings, but like I said, I am talking about auto for those shots where you don't have the time to set up and you just really need a good shot that can still look good whether or not lighting conditions are optimal. Also, if you don't want your subject to turn out dark in front of a sunset, just set the focus to her instead of the sunset. Bam, no tweaking required.

And for the chilling out part, I mean the aggressiveness and some-what abrasive presentation of your knowledge. Don't get me wrong, I truly appreciate what you have to offer, but we're talking auto settings here, so while I agree the settings help, it's not quite solving the issue that we're talking about. Maybe the fix is a slight change in default settings every time lighting fluctuates, or maybe the fix is to just switch to a different phone with a better sensor.

Since you know so much about camera settings though, I'm really curious to see what you can do with an SGS2 camera :)

We must get our fruit from different stores. :p This thread seems to have turned into a discussion between "Glass Half Full" and "Glass Half Empty" opinions. Personally I've never seen a post by Warpdrive that wasn't about trying to *HELP* somebody out of their predicament, with a positive attitude!! And Carrie also!! :D

I don't look down at anyone and do try to help people, as those who post here often can attest. I, nor warpdrive, have never laughed at anyone. You have quite the nerve suggesting that I unjustly attacked you when clearly you were telling warpdrive and I what we "need" to do like someone died and made you Moderator. You are entitled to your opinion and I am entitled to mine. If you don't like the camera or anything else about this phone then you have the freedom to purchase a different device.
