Confused bout whether I should root or not

Hey guys,
I'm really Confused bout whether I should root or not. I have already rooted before (no rom) but odined back to stock in anticiation for gingerbread. The only reason I want to root is for better battery life. I don't know whether to wait for a gingerbread rom or root now an flash srf. The only reason I'm scared to root now is that when I used Odin I was fine, but the one time I tried to flash a rom I got stuck on a booting loop. I'm in high school and he last thing I wanna do is tell my parents I caused my phone to be a paperweight
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

If you followed all the instructions correctly then you shouldn't have problems trying any rom you want. You can try a few and see which one fits your taste better. If not, then you can always flash back to fatctory following the instructions.

yea i guess i probably did something wrong.
i decided that im going to wait for gingerbread roms to come out then ill root
i also have a few questions about odin if anyone could answer them:
1. my family is getting a mac and would odin work on it?
2. If i start doing something on odin and something doesnt work, i wait for 5 minutes. Now last time this happened i rebooted my phone and my epic was the way it was before attempting to odin. Does this mean if something goes wrong with odin the old setup still works?
