considering returning permanently.

I can understand Rule9's situation of this new N7. I had the original N7 just after it was released and was lucky enough to sell it for a very good price with extra accessories a day before I got this N7 2013. I got this new one from BB just because I wanted to be able to return or exchange if needed.

Glad I did this as the first N7 2013 I got on July 28th had the grounding/touch problems. I waited until the last day (15 days) to exchange it. I wanted to test a few apps and try some things I would not normally do because I knew it would be going back anyway.

I returned the second one only because of two small things (but things non the less!)
1. a light bleed area on a small part of the top of the screen....it was confined in a small area about 1.5 inches across the top edge. It only showed up when certain colors or shades were used in that area of the screen. I use the tablet mostly in doors about 80% of the time so my brightness is set way low anyway. When I had reason to turn the brightness up to about 50-60%.....that light bleed became something I would stare at and irritate the OCD out of me. Haaaaaa

2. When I initially setup and ran through the 2 4.3 updates.....there was a glitch or pause during one of them and seem to effect the use after that. Sometimes with closing or opening certain apps or screen changing.....it would hic-up and glitch for a split second. I did a factory reset and tried it again....but something just did not seem right. I think that tablet had some bad memory chips. So it went back within a few days.

So now I am on my 3rd one and it is much much better than the prior 2. It seems slightly quicker and more stable as I swipe, type, open/close, and use the tablet in general. It seems to have a very very faint light bleed across that same top edge (camera edge in portrait). Thought this light bleed is pretty hard to detect unless you turn the brightness up past 60%..... know its still there and it bugs me some. I have not made up my mind if I can live with it or not yet....I have about 13 days left to decide with another exchange from BB.

In summary, The first batch that went to my local BB seems to be part of the bad batch with most of the problems. The 2nd and 3rd units I got weeks later are both from a different batch. Maybe in the next few months the manufacturing process will stabilize with better quality builds? But also what amounts of problems from any software changes could also change things drastically in either direction as we have seen with the first gen. N7. I know my first gen was super solid and fast after the 4.2.2 update. I never got to try the 4.3 that had come out hours before I sold it. It did not have any lag as other had described. I only use them stock and un-rooted as well.

At this point I tell myself.......I was lucky enough to sell my old one for a good price and updated from the old 16gb to the FHD 32gb for less than $100. Now I feel that even with the small minor light bleed that is very hard to see....and the GPS problems .....it is so much better than the first gen or any other choice with the low price factor. I just hope they sort out the GPS deal and its just a software thing. Look at how snappy the 2013 was out of the box prior to the 2 updates. I noticed first thing that when you hold down the power button to turn it on....it booted up within 2-3 seconds. Now with the current JB version....you have to hold the button down for about 6 seconds before it turns on and starts to boot. But with all 3 of these FHD's I never had a single reboot problem like others are reporting.

I think the current 4.3 has its problems and needs a major overhaul. Will google put out a solid update to JB quickly.....or even possibly will we see some pie soon? Either case....I will wait and see. The HD screen and form factor are keeping me here for now. iOS will not be an option no matter what. How about that new NVIDIA tab?

Why do i gave the nagging suspicion that we are being trolled by this guy who make sych a dubious case for the big A and makes such a meanspirited one for the new nexus, a brilliant tablet that is equal to ir even superior to my ipad mini and ipad3. Dude, if you dont like the n7 and have had so many ALLEGED problems return it and buy the beloved ipad and stop whining.

Alleged?
Have you been under a rock?
Just go though topics in this board or at least Google it.
I returned my 4th one after all 4 from 3 different sources had the same screen grounding issue.
It works for you, great. But this is the "buggiest" Nexus device ever released.

Yea, if anyone didn't think there are problems with other devices just check the other sites forums. I guarantee you'll see plenty there.

That's a fair argument to make under normal circumstances but I've been checking iMore off and on since last Fall deliberately watching for evidence because I've been flirting with trying it for that long. While there are definitely issues complained about, the scale and frequency of them over a ten month period appear much lower.

There's nothing proven by that but it's the general perception I've had when compared against typical android flagship devices during the same period of time. I have come to believe Apple do have a higher rate of quality and lower rate of defects than found on products made by Samsung, HTC, Moto, Sony, LG etc. As they should, being in control of both hardware and OS production.

For a more statistical approach, Square Trade publishes a list of the percentage of warranty claims made on mobile devices from all the major manufacturers for defects. Apple scores the best by a significant margin every single year.

Try addressing me like and adult in a civilized manner, minus the attitude and I'll answer you.

I'll gladly follow your rules. I wouldn't keep any product that I had to return 3 times. If you're an international traveler and make purchases regularly from an "app" store, then apparently Apple is a better choice.

I have no clue why you posted or what information/opinions you are looking for.

I don't know if MS can afford to wait for low cost tablet hardware to get to the point of running Windows 8 well. I would not be surprised to see them exit from the tablet market soon.

Lol. There is NO chance MS will be exiting from the tablet market. They definitely have issues with RT, but Surface Pro is a nice machine, and will get better with subsequent generations. Follow the leader.

I went through four iphone5 in as many months. No manufacturer is perfect.

I have both a nexus 7 and iPad mini. I think the iPad is a better tablet. N7 screen is just a little too small. My kids love it though.

Most people I know over 40 have no chance of seeing the print on this (N7) screen without some serious reading glasses.
No doubt this screen is for young people eyes.
The only reason I can use it is because I'm very near sighted and have freaky good vision at about 6-12 in. from my face.

I check multiple Android and Apple tech sites daily, particularly following major launches as I consider new purchases. Almost all forums end up looking like this one for at least a short period of time. Filled with complaints and people who have traded devices multiple times. When I had my iPad 2, it was all about light bleed issues which were widespread. I've seen Wi-Fi issues on both iOS and Mac devices, Antenna gate, weird screen blush issues (which I personally experienced and for which I had friends receive replacement computers), battery issues, and charging bricks and cords that created sparks and were fire risks (had that with one of my computers, sent pictures to Apple of the charred charger, which they quickly replaced).

All of this is not to bash Apple. I happen to be a fan. And I do think that one thing that distinguishes them is that they are easy to deal with when there are problems. But, don't be deceived into thinking that Apple launches or devices aren't as plagued with issues as other device launches.

The good thing about the N7 issues is that they are likely software so fixable with an update. For those willing to wait for said updated to come, they will likely have a great N7 experience. That can't always be said for a lot of problems with device launches (and my Apple list above proves this out).

As stated before, you should get what works for you and makes you happy.

There appears to be 4 common issues being reported with the new n7: quirky multi touch, GPS lock, random reboots, and some with distortion at lower volumes. In before "mine is working fine": OK cool. But I had to return mine 3x and there are enough people having problems that it's made tech news. So I must ask myself if I want to stay with a device that Asus has clearly not done a proper job with, or buy the iPad Mini 2 in a couple of months which if Apple's track record continues won't be this problematic and will in all likelihood be on par with specs and display.

So are you specifically experiencing the four "common issues" youve listed? What specifically are you experiencing that leads you to want to return your N7?

That's a crazy statement. LOL

I will be keeping mine for the long haul even it results in a million exchanges (30 days exchange and 1 warranty resets with each new device received). Lets hope android 5.0 comes with a whole new framework for smoothness because the stutter in apps needs to be rectified and its the only real advantage ios has over android apart from great customer service and more quality apps. My mantra is nexus or go apple. I'm no fanboy and equally admires each efforts. Also after seeing the difference a larger screen makes when it comes to gaming, doing it on a smaller screen is a no-no. With asphalt 8 and KR frontiers coming out its going to be great.

I actually toyed with waiting another 6 months or so for a fanless tablet running full windows with enough guts to run more powerful programs along with the battery life of an ARM based tab but I don't really need a device that size or have any serious need for a $1000 plus tablet either. It'll be pretty cool when they can do that though

What tablet runs full Windows and is fanless? Are you serious with your posts?

Ah so what? The OP makes a good point. Love or hate Apple their customer service stomps everybody else. Microsoft is stepping up with their full service stores. Google has improved since the first Nexus 7 but I go to Best Buy after experiencing the first launch problems. I picked my new Nexus 7 up Today and am experiencing the touch issues having to press several times to have it work.
I'm going to wait and see.

He replied like that because he was being sassed for his opinion. This is a tech forum. The new Nexus 7 is just that, new. He is one of many who have had multiple faulty units and is sharing his experience to those looking to purchase one. I don't think he's trying to seek the opinions of others, but rather trying to share what he has had to go through with his purchase.

I love the Nexus 7, but in both generations I've had issues. In just this generation, I had to return my first one because of non-stop restarts. Now, the one I got in exchange is having touch issues. I understand the idea of people with issues being more vocal about them as opposed to those who have none, but people do need to know about these issues prior to purchasing to see if their resolve is strong enough to possibly go through the process that OP and I and many others have gone through. I, on the other hand, am sticking with Nexus. I'm willing to tough it out because I prefer Android over iOS. It's just my preference. Everyone has their own.

Thank you, that sums it up well. It's good to have mature and intelligent feedback.

I've spent a lot of hours putting this tablet through the paces over the last couple of weeks and I'm 99.9% made up my mind to keep it for several reasons. While I stand by my earlier statement that Apple's easy customer service simply can't be beat, it just didn't end up outweighing the advantages of the 2013 N7 for me.

1. Value. I'm a self admitted cheapskate when it comes to electronics. I try to get the most value for the lowest cost and there's nothing out there that beats it in this category. I'm also possibly over-cautious about spending the least I can get away with because I've just never been confident of the longevity of modern day electronics (which is why I was considering an iPad for the basic peace of mind I could walk into the Apple Store near me at any time for hassle free replacements under warranty). Yes I'm so cheap that I wouldn't even spend the extra $40 for the 32GB because I'd only end up loading those extra movies once/year at the most. But I have found an elegant solution to that in case anyone is interested - If you only very rarely would load up on movies on special occasions like me, you can cram a whole bunch on your phone and stream them directly to your tablet using the WiFi File Explorer app. You don't even need your phone connected to data to do it. (also works for moving around any file types in general). I just tested it all out and it works great!

2. This Article really reminded me the reason I never wanted to switch to iOS is because of just how heavily I've grown accustomed to using many of the points discussed there. It's worth your time to click this link and read this short article, it will remind you why we prefer android in well presented points. This article was what finally drove home my decision with clarity.

3. Apps. Two of the biggest reasons given as iPad advantages are that the apps look more tablet oriented, and the quality of apps is somewhat better. While I'm not going to belabor those points, here's my feelings on it. The N7's screen size and aspect ratio are very similar to what a phablet would be. So an app designed for large android phones scaling in size for the Nexus 7 really isn't something I would call a disadvantage. On a 10" screen sure, point taken. But not on this device. Quality of apps also depends IMO. I usually only install from well rated developers so app quality hasn't been lacking in that regard.

4. The future. I'm not overly confident in Tim Cook's ability to wow us. Google on the other hand has been pleasantly surprising me non stop for the last year. The crowning achievement in more recent smartphone history IMO is Google Now which I use extensively. That was absolutely brilliant. Love or hate the Moto X, I also think the Active Notifications idea combined with the already existing and well done notification shade on Android is also exceedingly well done, and now thanks to developers everyone can use them. I also think the idea of using separate dedicated cores to power certain tasks on that phone was very efficient and clever engineering.

5. After being on my 3rd device this one appears to be mostly trouble free. Although this unit also has the 2-finger multi-touch behaviour that shows up in tester apps, it's not manifesting itself in regular use, and is so slight it barely shows up even in the tester app.

Lastly there's been some good feedback here. A small number of hostile responses as well, but that's to be expected on an all-ages forum (and most were from habitual repeat offenders anyway). But hopefully newcomers to the thread will realize that my intentions were sincere, just as the more mature responders have.

I strongly agree with points 1, 2, and 3. I'm not even considering returning mine because in everyday use, none of the issues manifest themselves. I already have an iPad and just really prefer Android over iOS and tablet apps are less of a big deal at this screen size. At 10", most phone apps are awful. I have a Xoom and I can't stand many of the apps because they aren't tablet specific. At this size phone apps work fine. I can't see any reason to spend $100 more on an iPad mini and I'm not a cheapskate.
