Constantly losing data connection

I swear i put a reply to this thread earlier today... this happens on both my S and V optimus. with stock and custom ROMs. I don't think its network issues I think its sprint persecuting heavy data use phones. (I.E. Android) I'd like to know if black berry users are experiencing these same issues.
I never had it happen to me on my BB and I doubt I use more than 300 megs a week. It still happened to me
I have been running great for the last 2 days now after dealing with the above problems.

I've had similar intermittent but frequent loss of data connectivity on the Optimus V.
I'm running aosp CyanogenMod 7 (gingerbread).
I stumbled on an apparent fix for this particular ROM, at least:
Under "Settings/Wireless & Network Settings/Mobile Networks", make sure "National Data Roaming" is enabled and under "System Select", choose "Home Only".
With these settings, 3G has now been solid for me for the last 2-3 days

Yeah but there's other bugs in the cm7 rom that meed to be worked out before I'd call it a fix.

So far I have nailed down 3 things happening... (yes, I posted this in a few places to help people with the problem, and yes, I experienced all 3)

1. Phone loses activation. This is rare and resetting your connection does not fix it, try the Activate button. I had a bad rom flash do this to me, but others have had it at random.

2. 3g drops due to loss of connection and using an app or setting to increase battery. There is speculation that the menu is labeled wrong on our phones, creating problems. personally, I wiped and got rid of all connection manager type of stuff and leave it stock, it works fine. Fix the other things robbing your battery like Twidroid and Gallery running in the background.

3. The browser.
Dolphin mini has been reported to have connection issues, and I confirmed last night that HD has the same problem. Everything worked on the phone, except for it. I reset data, and it came to life. Do NOT use Dolphin to check for connectivity. If it's your default browser, change the home page to a more reliable site like Google or Yahoo, it may help at least some.
Okay I looked at this and reset everything on my phone to stock and....same problem. I lose connection a few times a day with the 3G symbol still showing and data connection times out. It's almost like it's a DNS problem, or a problem with the data provisioning for Virgin. Surely the Sprint phones can't have an issue this annoying.

they do. I have a sprint Optimus S and it doesn't do it quite as often but it dose happen. I'm thinking sprint is giving priority to contract users. I'd be willing to pay an extra 10$ a month to ensure my data doesn't mess up..its very annoying. but it seems to happen the most to me when I'm trying to dl larger files. they have to be throttling the bandwidth and their system just messes up and cuts the connection.

I'm starting to fear there is no fix short of sprint upgrading the network to handle more users.

Use the Activation button, there may be an issue with your provisioning causing this. After I did that, my connection became more stable than it was.

I lost the activate button with my current rom. suppose i'll flash back to stock and then activate again, then flash back to custom.. or would that break the activation?

It won't break it.
Someone here has a link to the app, maybe they can post it instead of going through all of that.

Thank you for the help with this. I have tried the activation button a few times to no luck. At this point I really think that it is a Sprint problem and nothing at all with our phones. I don't really want to root my phone, but if the suggestion of selecting "Home Only" seems to work for rooted phones, I may have to go with that.

Selecting Home I believe is only for those running Cyanogen roms.

You may just have a spotty signal (there are apps to check it), or it may be one of the problems I listed earlier, or something new. Yes, it could be the phone, or a Sprint issue, but those should be more rare.

If you list out the apps you have installed, and had at prior times, that may help. Some apps don't cleanly uninstall. So any battery saving, or radio controllers previously installed could be the problem now.

This happens to me regularly between 6PM and 8 PM EST - doesn't matter if at work or at home.

its common. turning the airplane mode on and off usually fixes it.

to me it SEEMS to be a problem with the phone radio getting stuck during some part of the hand shaking process that allows the phone to use the 3G data connection. turning the radio off and on again forces it to try once more, usually working.

I BET that the reason it fails to fully connect is lack of a 100% signal in the first place. some data packet gets lost somewhere and the rest of the hand shaking between the phone and network hangs
This makes the most amount of sense to me. I wonder if this is something that VM can fix with a software update? Do they even care I guess is the question.

I'am running stock rom and my data was disconnecting too. I call Virgin Mobile and I told them i just purchaced you new "Android phone" and was having problems with my data. They said problems with the sys, but i believe there is a sprint code they use when setting up phones so when i told him Android phone he said he would start a ticket. after the call my data connection does not dropout and seems much fasted , hope this helps

Same issue too. Reset data connection at 2230 while getting ready for work and by the time I got to work at 2345 it had lost it again. Seems okay for now but its getting old fast.

Same problem here. I've tried the cynogen mod fix but that doesn't work. No idea what to do at this point. I was gonna return the phone for a new one... I did call vm and they supposedly fixed a data setting.. my 3g is faster now but still cuts out.
