Contact Syncing/Exporting

For quite some time now when I've added contacts on my phone, they never show up in by Gmail account so its clear the syncing went away years ago. Since these phones are now antique, I'm looking to upgrade soon and want to be able to import the contacts rather than having to add them manually. Does anyone here know how to do that or find a way to sync from phone to Google account? Thanks
