Contacts are gone-should I reinstall Gmail?

I have a stock 16Gb N7 about a year old. Got the OTA a couple of weeks ago. Apps have been updating and all is well generally. Then I wanted to look up a phone number and all my contacts are gone in the old People app that was original. I tried to enter my primary contact in the old People app, but it stopped working and would not enter it. I still have the names and email addresses pop up in Gmail if I enter a first letter, but can't get any other info like addresses, phone numbers, etc. I thought all this syncs through my Google contacts on all my devices.
As far as I can tell all sync options are properly selected.
I did a search on this forum, and it does not seem to be a general problem now. Can I install and reinstall Gmail? I assume I would have to clear all data first. I don't see the People or Contacts app in the Play store and I can't find an option in Gmail to see a full contact.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Go to Settings/Accounts-Google, tap your Google account, and make sure Contacts and People details are both checked on. I'm not sure which one of those is the important one for the People app (Contacts might be used more for a phone dialer), but it's reasonable to make sure they're both checked to sync.

If they're both checked to sync and you're still having problems, go to Settings/Apps/All, scroll down to Contacts Storage, then Clear Data. This will erase all contacts locally on your N7, but assuming they're all Google Contacts, they should all repopulate from the cloud the next time you sync.

Thanks, but it did not work, although i got to change other things on 2 other gmail addresses to not sync with Google Currents.
I did clear the data for both Contacts and Contact Data. Contacts went from 280kb to 36kb and Contacts is now at 3.83 mb, but nothing shows in the People app although I synced my gmail account again and restarted.
Both Contacts and Contact Data show version 4.3-737493.
Any other suggestions?

Hmm. Try wiping the cache partition, which temporarily stores various system log files and other data:

1. Reboot your tablet into the bootloader by turning it off, and then pushing the power, vol up, AND vol down buttons all at the same time.
2. Use your volume buttons to select Recovery.
3. If you?re on a stock recovery, wait until you see the Android with the red exclamation point, and press volume up + power at the same time, then release. You should see the Recovery Menu appear.
4. Using your volume buttons, select the option to clear your tablet?s cache.
5. After that is complete, select Reboot.

Alas, clearing the cache did not work either. Should I uninstall and reinstall Gmail? Does that have the contacts (People) app?

Sorry, I'm a bit stuck. If you're not rooted, you can't uninstall Gmail completely--all you can do is uninstall all updates so that it reverts back to the factory version. I'm also not sure how the Gmail app interfaces with the People app.

When you open People, tap the menu icon at the upper right, then tap "Contacts to display." Do you see your Google account listed there? Also tap Accounts--do you see your Google account listed there as well?

One more thing to try. Go to Settings/Apps/All, and Force Stop both Contacts and Contacts Storage, then try opening the People app again and see what happens.

I saw import and export and my 3 gmail accounts were listed. So I tried import and a box popped up saying "vCard missing". So.......

Wait, so are you saying you saw your 3 Gmail accounts listed when you tapped "Contacts to display"? Does it say "All contacts" right above your Gmail accounts? Are any of these options selected (i.e., are any of the circles to the right filled)?

When I push "contacts to display" on the right I see all 3 of my gmail accounts, one yahoo account and facebook listed. when I go to any of them it says no contacts in any of them, including facebook. If I try to add a contact, it says the app stopped after I enter the info and try to save it. I guess this is because the vCard, what ever that is, can't be found. I learned that when I tried to import contacts. How can I get anew vCard? Where would it be?

Your Gmail contacts should sync automatically. Your Yahoo and Facebook contacts should be syncable in the settings of the Yahoo Mail app and the Facebook app. You shouldn't have to import those particular accounts. I'm scratching my head here--not sure why even you Gmail contacts aren't showing up.

Don't get too into this. I appreciate all your help, but if you wake up at 3am etc. with the answer, let me know. I guess in the meantime I can get another contact app and import into it. Any suggestions?
Again, for some reason the names and emails still pop up in Gmail when I compose an email. Makes no sense.

Installed Contacts+ and it should work fine for what I need. As I recall, right after one of the earlier OTA's (got this N7 in Aug 2012) the icon for the Google contacts disappeared. I was able to get something back with one contact and could scroll thru others, but it never worked right after that. Maybe for some reason that app file is corrupt on my N7. Not worth a factory reset.
I really appreciate all your help on this. THANKS!!!
