Explosions ripped through Clelands Gun Shop as it went up in flames Monday afternoon, sending bullets flying and people running.
All people inside were safely evacuated.
The State Fire Marshal and ATF announced the result of their investigation on Tuesday. That report says: "Following interviews with witnesses and first responders and an extensive on-scene investigation, investigators say electrical components, air handling units and wiring can not be eliminated as the cause of the fire. Because a specific cause could not be pinpointed, the cause of the fire will officially be ruled UNDETERMINED. " The report also says: "The fire spread quickly through the roof joists and rapidly vented out of the peaks of the building. As a result of the fire, the building and its contents are deemed a total loss with damage estimates at more than $500,000."
During the blaze, exploding rounds of ammunition could be heard coming from the popular guns and ammo store and shooting range. As a result, it appears a single round is responsible for damaging the front tire of a passing FedEx truck which caused a crash and further collateral damage.
Several witnesses to the incident stated they saw State Troopers race to the FedEx truck to verify the drivers condition. As they arrived a local man was already assisting the driver while screaming and crying, "Somebody help me! My Droid is in there! My Droid! She's unprotected, please help her! My God somebody help her!"
"Certainly there was some concern. Mr. Matthew's (name changed) was irate and hysterical. We kept people back and used aerial devices without people at the top. We used some unmanned lines to keep it from extending over to the patrol post," said Monclova Fire Chief Kevin Bernhard. "After observing his actions, we were concerned for the peoples safety" The chief said he even found shell casings on top of the FedEx truck. Smoke poured from the building for hours after the fire began around 2:30 p.m. Thick black and brown smoke could be seen for miles throughout the afternoon.
Four departments placed between 30 to 40 firefighters on the scene. One firefighter twisted an ankle. Another suffered heat exhaustion. Crews managed to keep the flames from spreading to the front of the building where the majority of the ammo, including kegs of gun powder, was stored.
While the driver of the Fedex truck was uninjured, the few packages that remained on the truck weren't so lucky. "Mr. Matthew's (named changed) is pretty shook up." said Trooper Johnston. "He's taking this whole thing pretty hard. He's been sitting over there with his head in his hands for 3 hours. Apparently his Droid Incredible was on that truck. He was following it home from the FedEx facility after he finally got shipping notification. He said he's been waiting for weeks and weeks... the poor guy. All we can determine is that during the crash a few of the heavier packages on the truck smashed through the Incredible box and scratched the phone up pretty good. It still works, but it looks terrible."
"He's been saying over and over 'If only it shipped with my Siedio case...If only it shipped in my Siedio case...' said Trooper Johnston. "It was very disturbing to watch. Hopefully, he pulls through this tragedy Ok."
Cleland's is a well-known, family-owned business.
Airport Highway is open after being closed for roughly 5 hours Monday afternoon. Fire crews were still on the scene late into the night keeping a close watch to make sure nothing sparked up again. Since the incident, Mr. Matthew's has been unreachable for comment. Friends and family members are very concerned.
