Coronavirus Crushing S20 Launch - Sales Down 50%

I just picked up a Pixel 4 thru T-Mobile for $435(inc. tax) I'll just wait six months and pick up a Ultra for half price.

As consumers, not having to upgrade every year because the improvements aren't worth the price is a good problem to have. However it is going to bite us all eventually when it comes time to buy a new device. Samsung is only beginning to realize what pricing its flagship line into the stratosphere is going to have on its bottom line. And it has nothing to do with coronavirus. People are not only going to upgrade less often, but are going to spend less money when they do.

Apple has already taken the hint and will be releasing a very competitive "mid-ranger" with internals shared with iPhone 11. Not exactly the kind of midrange device you get from Android. In the short term I would expect to see some very deep discounts coming from Samsung for the S20 line, as they battle it out with Apple for sales...discounts not unlike how the Pixel 4 went on sale barely a month into its release.

I also picked up a pixel 4 for $399 from T-Mobile....aren't you a little tempted to trade it in for $600 and get an S20? I'm not going to lie. Its across my mind

Like what?

How about those made by the likes of Google, Huawei, OnePlus, LG, Redmi, Sony, Asus, etc. If it came with the fastest SOC for the time it usually was considered "that" manufactures flagship. And I did not specify "latest-n-greatest" either so people may opt into buying an older flagship.

No....more people worldwide buy mid-rangers overall than high end phones is what I'm trying to say.

Yes you are right. I meant those wanting something with flagship status, but w/o the hefty price tag, will look at another manufacture and/or, choose last years flagships that had their pricing reduced.

That is really very sad. It is affecting a lot of smartphone manufacturers and other markets.

There are definitely more important things happening in the world than upgrading a phone right now.

The S20 series isn't going anywhere,(people can buy the phone all spring/summer) nor is Samsung in trouble. But that won't stop the click bait.

Yes, a virus that kills less people than the usual seasonal flu is the reason for the lower than expected sales.

What happened to Mobile World Congress? I guess they should have carried on, since this no big deal really...

I see alot of people with midrange devices, Samsung and otherwise. You'd never notice the difference if your eye wasn't trained for it, they look almost exactly like their high end counterparts, and that isn't by accident.

People say phones are too expensive. No, the phones YOU want are too expensive. People want all the latest specs, but don't want to pay for it. Otherwise, there are all sorts of midrange devices by every manufacturer that all almost just as good.

As for Samsung, the biggest misfires imo, was not including a non 5G variant. They're forcing customers to pay for something that isn't a necessity right now. The other, is not supporting older devices. That alone really decreases resale value.

Well some smartphones have gotten way too expensive when you consider the average lifespan. In 2015 it was like 4.7 years (user replaceable batteries were more the norm) and now we're down to 2.5 years for devices that cost considerably more. Then there's the level of support that really hasn't improved all that much making a device kinda passe within 2-3 years not to mention less secure. And sealed batteries w/limited longevity. Dunno but the picture being painted here seems all wrong.

When it comes to Samsung yeah probably an oopsie on their part for not offering a non G5 variant. Personally, that don't bother me as their "A" Series intrigues me hugely more than any flagship they offered since the S8 days.

It’s true that the flu kills many people but we don’t know yet how deadly this will be. In places where it’s spreading it’s wise to take precautions. No need to panic at this time though.

Oh, of course there are. Case in point: the Corona Virus. But since the thread was purely regarding sales of the Samsung S20 line, my post was merely staying on topic. :)

I refuse to exceed the 1k (CAD) mark which leaves even the base S20 completely out of the question, Ultra's base model nears 2K (CAD) with it being a definite nope.

In my opinion 8K at this point is somewhat of a useless addition to be paying extra for. Won't be of much use at this point, only 24fps (because of the processing power required will probably be less due to frame drops), and it doesn't utilize stabilization. 120Hz refresh rate might be cool for some yet don't see it as being a real necessity either, it's not like my present devices with their 60Hz displays leave me gasping every time we scroll LOL. And QHD displays (which can't utilize the 120Hz on S20 Series any ways) were never a thing for me as 1080p always sufficed.

The thing is manufactures have to toss out a few carrots (as small as they are) otherwise they risk losing their consumer base... Believe those w/aggressive pricing will see an adverse affect in due course anyway. At the going rate though we'll be seeing 3K flagships in two years time which is crazy to think about, even more crazy is their level of support won't likely be much better than devices a quarter of that price.
I agree with you on the 8k recording, it's pretty much useless for most. I equate that to the note 10+ 3D scanner, pretty much useless.
