Critiques for Pixel 3 and Android P

You indicated you agreed with a previous poster that you trust Anandtech for their reviews. I'm just showing their recommendations and what they consider are the best phones to get now. The point was that we were talking about the value of reviews and since Anandtech seems to be credible why not show it?

Yes Anandtech is one of the precious few objective review sites left. Their process is fair. While, I think a holiday rec list is a bit different than a review as that's more of a shopper's insight piece. Their reviews are much deeper than that.

If Anand says the note 9 is among the best phones to get this holiday season, it's because they think there are good reasons to think that. If Android Central agrees, it's because they also think there are good reasons to think so. The difference is that Anand can reasonably explain how they arrived at that decision, whole AC can't. AC will do a fluffy review for a device and then spend the next few weeks trashing it on Twitter... for things they never mentioned in the review.

The article goes into explanations for their recommendations and those would be based on their deeper reviews.

I agree with you about the AC flip-flopping. They have been Pixel 3 honks since it came out but once the results were in they changed their tune about the Note 9 and are now saying how great it is and that the Pixel 3 suffers from a less-than-amazing screen. It's rather hilarious.

I read Anadtech regularly, so I already read their piece. But thanks for posting for others who may have an interest. Their review of the Pixel 3 was probably the most objective, most balanced of the device I've read. They weren't raging fans and I actually completely agree with their assessment and conclusion of the Pixel 3.

Again, criticisms are okay. Other devices are okay too. I mean, if someone were to ask me what Android to get right now, I'd point them to a 6T. Solid device that covers a lot of bases at a good price point.

I agree with 6t

Good point, that's not right to view a phone and then go bash it elsewhere.

That is crazy..

I have rarely put much faith in reviewers. Give me the spec sheet, a price, and I am usually good.

Especially since the commentary about the display is untrue. The 3 is good to very good, while the 3XL is in the "amazing" club.

+1
I spent a good bit of time at the local stores comparing the 3 and 3 XL side-by-side. So for me it's not just a vote for what I own. Although I do own a Pixel 3 XL 128.

So who do you guys trust as good reviewers? Ones that put the Pixel 3 and 3XL ahead of all others based on them subjectively having the best cameras even if they lack other hardware features other OEMs are implementing and are overpriced? The big YouTube reviewers also placed other phones ahead of it as their POYs as well (MKBHD, AA, Mr. Mobile, Dave Lee, etc.) such as the Note 9, Mate 20 Pro, and OP 6T. Pixel wins some awards for having the best camera but rarely best overall package.

Most people in these types of nerd forums vote with their wallets as most cannot buy more than one phone anyway to do proper long-term comparisons. So they are always partial to their own phones.

The Reader's Choice poll done by AC (not the editors which others have already said are non-credible) also have the Note 9 first for what it's worth and sure you can poo-poo the validity of that poll too.

Andantech, Arstechnica, The Verge, Android Police, MKBHD, David Lee are a few that I enjoy.

I'd agree that the Note 9 would be the best overall android phone in 2018. Then maybe the Mate 20 Pro, OnePlus 6T and a few others.

I wouldn't put the Pixel 3/3XL in the top 5 phones of the year, maybe not even in the top 10. IMO it's the worst Pixel phone released relative to its competition.

The 3XL has a substantially better screen than the 3. No doubt because of the Samsung panel vs the LG panel.

Even still, I feel like the Pixel 3 XL got lower binned screens or something as it doesn't look as good as the Galaxy/Note 9.

I'm never swayed by reviewers, especially those on YouTube that depend on clicks for income, thus the importance for them of coming up with a "Click Bait" review.

The most important reviewer for me is ME! :) If it passes my review for what I want my phone to do, I keep it. I kept my Pixel 3 XL 128 for all the reasons that are important to me! Obviously, Your Mileage May Vary!

Of course, but we (or at least I) don't have the luxury of testing out every phone on the market, so having a completely objective opinion is impossible if I don't get to use the phones. If I'm buying a product, I'd like to get opinions of those who have used a range of products and can review them. That's where reviewers come in handy - they can discuss the phone and their experience using it, the pros the cons and then you get to decide what you think is valid/not valid and whether the phone will suit your needs.

I really don't think it's necessary to, as you say, test every phone on the market. Since I'm only interested in the best flagship of my trusted manufacturers, for me it is quite easy to eliminate all but a few phones. Now it becomes very easy to physically examine each of these phones and then make a choice. I have my personal criteria, as I see you do too. I buy it, and if it meets all my personal criteria, I keep it. I seriously couldn't care less what someone else thinks.
