Custom kernel to fix wifi issues?

I've been searching for the past two hours and my head is starting to spin. I'm having troubles remaining connected to WiFi with my Samsung Epic 4G (Sprint). It will usually connect, and stay connected for anywhere from 2-10 minutes before going back to EVDO or 4G. Sometimes I can't even restart the WiFi radio, either from the power bar widget or from WiFi settings. I've got stock EB13 via the manual update. The former problem existed (but to a lesser extent) on DI28, while the latter problem is new to me under EB13. None of this is anything I can replicate on any device other than the Epic.

Question: Will a custom kernel address this issue? If so, which one? Again, I've really searched like crazy but I don't see anything that directly addresses this issue. Thanks!

There are no kernels out there that address anything with Wifi to my knowledge.

I occasionally get dropped wifi and have to reconnect but not to the point of what your talking about.

Thanks, Paul. I've got to tell you that it's annoying as hell.

In all of my reading I saw lots that you posted regarding rooting, ROMs, kernels, etc. I also see that the new OTA Froyo update comes out this week. Did I understand correctly your posts elsewhere that having a rooted phone but no other changes (i.e., no custom ROMs, kernels, etc.) will still allow me to receive the upgrade OTA? I just now rooted the phone to add wireless tether but nothing else. Maybe I'll get lucky and the upgrade will overwrite whatever is causing my issues?

i'm having the same problem. It started when i upgraded to froyo. When i flashed the ace rom it seemed to have fixed it, but it started acting up the next day. I'm hoping tommorrow's update addresses it.

Yes you should be fine as long as you have no ROMs, kernels or any bloatware removed. 3rd party app installed should not stop you from receiving the update.

It is possible tomorrows update could address some of the ongoing issues. I guess we will find out.

Although I'm still having problems at times restarting the WiFi radio (happened today, for example, after returning home from skiing and I had to reboot the phone to be able to turn it back on) I think that I found the random disconnect problem. I had a while back used Settings Profiles to turn on the WiFi radio when I get home and connect to my home router, based on GPS location. I suspect that when GPS accuracy degraded that it would disconnect. I've deleted that profile and since then, once I connect at home I stay connected.

[fingers crossed]
