ARCHIVED: [DEAD ROM] ThundeROM V1.8.3 4/5/2011

Just upgraded from 1.3 to 1.4 and I have to say it is very an improvement. I have one suggestion, however, or maybe I'm just ignorant of the option: the new animations to me are very distracting, especially where a window will rush in from left to right and bounce off the right hand side of the screen. It slows me down when I'm trying to do something quickly on the phone, and also it prevents use of the keyboard until it's done doing it's little bouncy animation. In the next iteration of the ROM could you provide an option to disable these zany animations? I really like the windows fades and the pop in from the corner for certain menus, but those bouncy ones affect my productivity in a big way. Just a suggestion. Again, great ROM and I look forward to the new releases!

As nick7 stated in post #447

Menu -> Settings -> Display -> Animation -> No Animation.

Theres also an option for some animations.

@KSmithInNY, Thanks for pointing that out for me, and please excuse my ignorance. I try to keep up with this thread but I sometimes miss stuff. Thanks again for your awesome work.

EDIT: The "Some animations" setting is exactly what I was looking for. The keyboard still does the little bounce animation, but that wasn't nearly as distracting as the window one.

Coming from my CM6 Hero this phone kicks ass. I decided I would pick one up on craigslist and give it a try. The Optimus S kicks ass :)

Any way you will ever develop a drop down menu power widget thing like in CM6? Thats what I miss most. Any way to incorporate the Circle Battery mod like I've seen as addons to most Roms out there That would be awesome.

Thanks for the hard work Dev's!

Just flashed the ROM last night, and loving it so far (aside from the "bounce" animations in some places).

The problem I have with setting it to "some animations" is that this also disables the nice "fade in" effect that was included with the stock ROM as well. Would be nice to JUST be able to disable the bounciness, without disabling that too. Without the fade, apps just suddenly "appear" a bit jarringly if you're used to the fade.

Like I said though, fantastic work all around despite this niggling issue on the animations. Bravo.

What most impressed me is the HUGE amount of internal space I've gained as a result. Prior to flashing, I'd rooted and was religiously using both Cachemate and Cache Cleaner NG, yet I was still always hovering around 52-58MB free internal. After flashing, with all apps back installed, I've now got 115MB free at the time of this writing. Dunno how you did that bit of magic... but wow, MUCH appreciated.

Wow, sounds like no one likes the new animations... :)

This is sort of what I was saying earlier about changing things "for the sake of change" rather than because they are actually better in any way. Then again, Beezy and Ksmith did say they made this rom for THEM, they can't really cater to everyone.

Still, I'd bet the next update removes them like they did stagefright this time... heh

Hey, so what i did was open your old 1.3 in 7-zip, and copied the old framework-res.apk from there, to the current update, toggled off verification, and voila no error or anything. Just curious is this practice safe? I mean so far it doesn't seem to have harmed anything at all? System works great without the new animations.

Sure but if/when we make changes to the frame work (and we will be soon) you will not get those changes doing that.

Also, the animations won't impact system performance so i think a more fair statement would be "system works great, with or without the animations" ;)

@dishe: It may not be too fair to say that no one likes them. Personally I didn't feel that I need that much flair in my OS transitions, but I can definitely see the "wow" factor for people who want to show off their phones to others and demonstrate how well the interface performs given the modest hardware in this model of phone. Personally I'm looking for a no-nonsense productivity device, so I felt the animations were a bit much, but the fact that I get the choice to turn them on or off is why Android is great!

I'm someone who doesn't like any sort of fancy transitions, whether it's in Powerpoint, on Windows/Ubuntu/Macintosh, or on my phones. One of the first things I did when I installed ThundeROM v1.3 was to disable animations. Since mine were already disabled when I upgraded to 1.4 I didn't know what folks were talking about. I just enabled them to see what all the buzz was about, and I've got to say, I kind of like them. Almost enough to keep them turned on. I have no idea what stock Android animations look like so I'm not sure how much was customized for this ROM and how much is stock, but wherever they came from, they look pretty sharp. My one complaint is that I felt a bit like an iPhone user when they were enabled, and that makes me feel a little icky.

Perhaps. But the stock animation is subtle enough to be there, not enough to be in the way.
From what I understand, you can disable the new ones, but not go back to subtle stock ones. That's what I think people are complaining about. Again, I'm not the one complaining... I'm still on the previous ROM, and everything has been running well enough for me that I didn't update. I haven't even seen the new animations, honestly. Just judging from what others have said.

thumbs up

Used stock for a few days, then flashed 1.4. Came from 2.2 on the hero.

Killed most animations from settings and then killed the rest with adw.launcher. No overshoot, super fast screen changes. Adw.launcher is best found on appbrain.

Developers- question. Is it difficult to incorporate wired tether? I miss wired tether a lot.

This rom he been great so far but I am just curious on why the browser has no progress bar while loading websites. Is there a way to get that back?

I love having no warning for updates....it's just like, BAM, surprise fun.

Thanks Beezy and Ksmith!!! (lots of cool updates in this one too, it looks like....don't get me wrong, bugfixes are NECESSARY, but craptons of widgets and apps are FUN).

What bugfixes are you refering to? Just wondering cause we are completely unaware of any bug this ROM introduces. Thanks in advance for any clarification.

EDIT - Maybe i read that wrong? Are there bugs we introduced that should be focused on? We're more than happy to fix LG/Sprint bugs but want to include our own fun first :p

Also we charge $1,000 to fix a LG/Sprint bug .... thats our standard rate. Ha ha j/k

None in this one necessarily....I was just saying that 1.5 looks like it has lots of cool new goodies, which is cool. Then I was trying to say that your hard work in fixing bugs, (in past updates), is also appreciated, so it didn't seem like I was all about the flashy goodies. I'm betting it takes more time to fix bugs than to add goodies, so was trying to emphasize that too....

I've probably confused myself more than you now. :o

On a completely unrelated note, would it be possible for you to post up md5sum's along with your releases? I'd like to be confident that a bit wasn't switched for a byte during download when then flashing that onto my phone.

Edit: While I'm nitpicking, post two of this thread probably doesn't need this anymore:
Known Bugs specific to this ROM:
- "Note To Self" in voice search does not work.
