Disappointed because not selling from us carriers..

Numbers matter, so I won't make up numbers. I happen to have AT&T. I get a 20% corporate discount. There is no "corporate plan", just a discount on whatever plan you want. I don't even work for that company anymore, but they don't really care. They never asked me for any verification of employment (neither did Sprint). Since this forum is about the Nexus, Dave should not buy the $700 phone, but rather buy a $350 phone. My daily driver is a OnePlus One ($350) - a fantastic phone. AT&T will never carry a phone like that. And then there is carrier bloatware and crapware - god I hate that! The day my last contract was up, I got a $30 discount plus an increase in data of 50%. I now have total freedom to go with an MVNO and drop my costs even more, or just sell my old phone (still in demand), and buy a new one like a Nexus 6P (Aluminum 64GB is on order). I can't tell you how great it feels to be out of the clutches of a carrier. Maybe there is a cost of freedom, but I am willing to pay it...

Capisce?

BTW, who still pays for LD? I stopped that when I got rid of my last rotary dial phone.

Postscript: I bought a new in the box Amazon 64GB Fire Phone for $149. That includes one year of free Amazon Prime. So really, the phone cost me only $50. Very crappy operating system, but I put CM11 on it and now it is a real nice phone. The hardware is actually pretty good. No need to spend $700 on a good phone.

Sounds like you got it figured out :). As for the "should" buy a phone -- that is very opinion based. I could buy a fire phone and do what you did but I would really rather not. Hence why I went with the Moto X Pure -- no carrier bloat and I am good to go. Also pretty much all carriers now a days accept SIM swaps. Sprint may be the only one who is picky sometimes -- but Verizon can't be.

Just like going to an MVNO is a personal choice -- I personally will pay for a network to work versus saving a few bucks if it came down to that. Luckily for me I am on the 2line/$100 a month deal from T-Mobile (fully unlimited everything including data) but if T-Mobile went to crap where I live I would probably go to Verizon. I can't go back to Sprint or an MVNO for them even if it saved me money -- I had very bad experiences with them (about 2 years ago). Maybe in another few years once they beef up my area I would consider them but at this point -- no ty.

Yeah you're right numbers DO matter. The difference is that I'm not cozy telling the general public what the exact numbers of my finances are so I used an example scenario instead. The point you missed is that for my actual plan, my legacy corporate plan does in fact amount to about $500 less over 2 years buying on contract than any current plan on any carrier offering a BYOD discount regardless of whether I posted an example scenario or my actual bill for you to look at.

I don't know which phone you figured the $500 savings on, but I would assume that since you are on this forum it is a high end Android phone. So the full retail price would be in the $600 - $800 range. If you bought a high end phone like the 6P that is not offered by any carrier, your actual savings would only be about $200 - $300. To me, it is worth giving up every penny of that savings to not have any bloatware, get updates that are not dependent on the carrier's good graces, and not be locked into anything. That's why I am so exited about the Nexus 6P. But that's just me...

I pretty much agree with all of that. Good choice on a phone. I actually received a OnePlus Two the day after they announced the 6P. I didn't open the box, and I just sold it on ebay. Now waiting impatiently for my 6P!

Called Verizon yesterday and asked about bringing the 6P over to replace my Note 4. Everything should work out fine. The rep reviewed our plan though (3 lines, 6 gigs shared) and recommended we switch to a 1gb plan that with current promotions for long term customers (we've had Verizon for over 10 years IIRC) includes 4 gb free data per month for a total of 5 gb plan. It saves us over $40 a month. Combined, all three lines rarely go over 1gb combined (we all have WiFi at work and home). Confirmed that making this change did not extend any contracts and that we could revert to our old plan at any time. I have a feeling that this is being done to encourage long term customers to stay with Verizon.

With multiple carriers offering to pay off your current service to switch and get the latest iPhone, I think perhaps they anticipate a lot of people switching over? We get a 17% discount off our monthly bill from employee discounts and Verizon has always had the best service in our location, so it is highly unlikely that we would ever switch.

Did you switch to the new Verizon Plan?

With the new Verizon Plan it says in the details you have to purchase the phone through Verizon, either out right or payments, to receive the $20 per month discount per line... can you still get this discount somehow with the 6P since you can't get it through Verizon... anyone know?

I was wondering how this same thing would work if I purchased any Verizon phone through Best Buy... how would you get the $20 per line discount then.

I believe if you brought your phone from Best Buy and its a carrier phone (i brought my Verizon Note 4 from Best Buy) then you would be eligible for the Verizon plan. If you buy the 6P then I believe you would not be eligible for the Verizon plan. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

If you are correct then I could see this as being really the only big drawback not being able to get the 6P through the carrier... at least on Verizon anyways... otherwise I'd much rather not purchase a 6P through a carrier, considering Verizon's bloat and how slow they are to push out updates.

Just go to a Sprint MVNO. They are a lot cheaper when you bring your own phone. See here: Sprint MVNO's Comparison by Price and Features

I just can't believe anyone would want to be a slave to a carrier...

I'll pass. I've dealt with Boost and Virgin Mobile before. You definitely get what you pay for, especially when it comes to customer service. As for being a "slave to a carrier", how is paying an MVNO any different than paying a post-paid carrier?

No Contract. I use Ting for my wife's phone and it's been great.

$600 is still a lot to drop on a phone. financing is a much better option since i was looking to upgrade every year. look at the price of a nexus 6 now at max u could probably get about $250 for the initial $600 phone. so i would be paying $300 or more to get a new phone if i can find some one to buy my old one as nexus devices aren't as popular. id rather pay my $20 a month trade it in whenever i want and get a new one.

If you buy direct from Huawei they offer financing too, and it's more forgiving than the offer thru Project Fi because I got approved thru one and not the other. Yes, you have to give up the promo offers you get from ordering the phone thru Google but it's another option for those wanting to pay over time.

As much as I am not happy with Sprint in my area, I was willing to pay less for the phone and sign a 2 year contract with my 10 year old Sprint Unlimited plan with 3 lines and employer discount.

Whether I am under contract or not, my bill is $180 for unlimited everything for 3 lines. I'd rather have paid $200 each for two phones (if they would have been $200 each, maybe the 6P would have been $300 each?) and signed a 2 year contract with Sprint, than paid $499 each for two phones and not be on contract paying the exact same monthly price. For my case, not having a carrier sell the phones cost me $600 (or $400 if the 6P would have been $300 each) but have the ability to jump ship to Project Fi at any time if I wanted to give up my Unlimited plan.

It should be easier. These carriers should be nothing but dumb pipe commodities. Instead they all try to "value add" crap to confuse consumers. Too bad only Apple has the power to reign them in.

That's why I love Google voice. I treat my carrier as a dumb pipe and can drop them if they annoy me, and have done so. Pick right up with a new SIM where I left off no problem and none of my friends even notice.
