Disappointed (S20 ultra)

Both Apple and Google are much better at laying out exactly what they will be fixing when any patches are sent out. Communication is the key. Let customers know that you have heard the complaints, and will address them asap.

With Samsung, you don't know what they will be fixing and on what model featuring which processor. It's a more complex process that usually takes more than one update to cover.

Base your decision on the phone you have in front of you right now. Don't wait on updates to decide because you'll lose your 14 day window.

turn off beauty mode and scene optimizer then try. I have s20+ and I can safely say its better than my s10+. I can even see all my zits on front camera which I could not on s10+

Well I'm not disappointed. The phone works very well. Fastest phone I've had. The battery life is great, love that big battery. The 120 refresh rate, loving that, sure Apple will have that feature after they perfect it, lol. Far as I'm concerned, the camera works good for a phone camera, you want professional pictures then might want to invest in a stand alone camera made for that. Then again I don't buy phones for the camera, that's just a bonus for me. If quality pictures were important to me I would buy the appropriate equipment needed, not a combo device such as a phone.

I question whether I should have upgraded from the note 10+, but then again I say that every time I upgrade. The 120 refresh rate keeps showing me every day why I'm glad I did upgrade.

Also, let's discuss the price a little. Everyone is comparing the price to the note 10's, the S20's cost more. Let's compare apples to apples. Samsung forced 5G on the S 20 series. Let's price compare the S 20's to the 5G version of the note. Basically add $200 to the prices of the notes, roughly. Take the 5G off and the price isn't that much it any more. I don't have 5G here in my area, but I do have 5G router for my cable internet and I constantly get 200 Mbps download speeds, where before on other phones like the note 10+, I averaged 60 with some peaks here and there of 140. I'm assuming the 5G on this phone is giving me those speeds, all I know is I'm liking it.

Ok, so as it used to be the case some years ago, one more time it looks like Samsung is experimenting with S series, hopefully to deliver a much more perfected device in the Note series. Looks fine to me, since I really want and like the S Pen

I don't know if I agree with Samsung using the S series as experiments to make the note better. Remember the note 7...

True. But between first Note and the last one, except the 7 (which aimed to have a super hyper battery not tested in S7) that was the case several times, as I remember.

I see the S series as the Samsung's mainstream flagship, that "must-have-novelties" line. The Note series is that "not-for-everyone" line, so it tends to be more conservative. Sometimes Samsung tried to change it (and failed, like in the 7), but I think that's more or less the case.

True, but the 2 phones end up getting the same stuff, so which one is doing the testing?
That's a good question...

I tend to guess it's S line because of its position in the calendar. But that's, obviously, not necessarily the case every single time.

That's just a theoretical thought, though, and I think I'll never be able to know it certainly. That was just my guess, and continues to be... Just a guess.

Maybe that’s how they are trying to justify the price of the S20 where because their past high priced 5G variants were so expensive that extra $200 your paying is for the radio.

Problem is, that 5G radio in reality only costs dollars more than the older radio. It doesn’t cost hundreds of dollars more.

I brought up cost in parts to build a $1400 Ultra being around $30 more than the $1099 iphone Max Pro and people were arguing “you can’t make comparisons like that to Apple because of their costs like labor and marketing blah blah.” true but you can look at it this way... the $999 S10 plus costs $420 in parts to make. The $1400 Ultra costs $530 in parts to make. Labor and marketing etc $400 more than previous gen passed to the consumer?? I really really doubt that.

iPhones have in the past have always been considered overpriced. They have a loyal base that’s help Apple be able to sell at that premium... for years without needing discounts in price or gimmicks throwing accessories and such. Samsung just believes that their S phones now deserve that same premium and that’s why they are now priced the way they are imo.

The average consumer may never know that and eat up exactly what you said and say that’s ok. But at the end of the day I think Samsung will have miscalculated thinking people will also give them the Apple premium and they’ll still cringe at the price increase and it will have the effect of them taking a pass on the phone.

The Note line, for years before the 7, use to be the flagship phone having the cutting edge tech, everything the best before the galaxy line... the Note would showcase the new processors, screen tech and radio tech before the galaxy would get it in their next years model, etc.

Later it changed to now the galaxy showcases the new processors and panels and radios etc and the Note now gets what the galaxy gets.. with the pen added.

The camera is unacceptable for a $1,400 phone. Samsung threw hardware at a problem that requires a software solution. Let's hope they fix it in the Note 20

Since I got the S20 + Sunday and I absolutely love this phone. But all the advertisement and YouTube videos about the Ultra having the better camera it makes me think the S20+ is subpar in that department. I know I made the right choice in the + over the Ultra, it just makes me think should I have gone the Ultra route? 🤔

the plus has the better overall camera system

So your saying there's nothing positive about 20 ultra? Can you not return the phone, it won't be too late.

Seems they've had a yr to make the phone and rush it to market.
But didn't get all the bugs out of it before they sold it.
Now you got to wait for a update to make things work right.

Sounds like a unfinished product.

Dropping off my Ultra 512gb return to Samsung today. As much as I loved the new shiny toy. I just feel that I would rather wait for the Note 20 when these camera issues are fixed right out the box. Also wasn't in love with the round edges for watching stuff.

I think it just depends on what's available at the time. Like how the note 9 was rumored to have the in display scanner, but the displays weren't ready. Made sure it was on the s10 which was the big release next release. Same with the higher refresh display. Come to think of it they definitely test the market more with the S series. Wireless charging, water resistance, reverse wireless charging were all made available on the S series first not to mention they tend to get the newer version of Android 1st.

You can say they test the market with the S series or you could now say they consider the S line the top flagship phone, who knows.

I get both note and S series phones, so I see what both do. I see it they follow each other with tech with each one getting tweaks the other one will get when it releases. The note used to be the one that got the higher specs, but I see that tend changing, just my thoughts

Boy am I glad to have mustered up some control over my impulsive spending tendencies!

The S-series is their main line whatever they do with Note is for small percentage of market. Heck the Note was not even released in Europe for some versions. Any experiment they want to do they do with Note line. For Samsung S line is more important and Note line is whatever and it'll appeal to small subset of hardcore fans. But for the last couple of years even the Note line is nothing other than little improved S line with S-Pen. Even Qualcomm release cycle for newer SoC is lined with the S series. We'll see how they will do this year, but with foldables being the new hype I believe Note line will continue be just S-series with S-Pen and minor changes, unless they want to brand one of their crazy foldables as Note line which I doubt.

Where did they experiment idea of crazy big screens, edge screens, no headphone jack, no SD card etc? All Note line. They will try any changes with Note first and then decide what to push to their main S series.
