Disappointed (S20 ultra)

Right i wouldn't either i barely use my camera, but lots are returning theses phones since some realized it's not worth it if already on a S10 or Note10 Plus, this didn't happen to last years model .

Edit: and that is why this thread is here big disappointment.

Obviously everyone is not disappointed or we would have returned our phones too. Its all about choice. Some people like the phone some dont. I didn't buy it for the camera. The camera works great with distance shots just not up close. So i installed gcam for the up close shots problem solved . Yes i understand i shouldn't have to do that . So i can see if people who brought the phone strictly for the camera would be upset. but the rest of us who didn't , love the phone and think it's great

Every release people buy them and return them. It's normal to hear the complaints more. Everyone that's happy is usually to busy being happy to complain.

Why not? I use my camera a lot and is very important to me and many others that buy smartphones

When I text, I am ALWAYS using my camera so send pics of what I'm doing or surrounding area for fun. When I am at work, to show co-workers at different sites, the lay of the facility, the rooms, the config of server ans switches so they have a visual of what I am talking about.

There are people I see that Facetime friends and family ALL the time. Our company has basically put ZOOM on all computers and all smartphones now.

And the ultra does very good for all that

I think it just depends on what's available at the time. Like how the note 9 was rumored to have the in display scanner, but the displays weren't ready. Made sure it was on the s10 which was the big release next release. Same with the higher refresh display. Come to think of it they definitely test the market more with the S series. Wireless charging, water resistance, reverse wireless charging were all made available on the S series first not to mention they tend to get the newer version of Android 1st.

I don't really believe it's a test device by design. It's just the way the timeframe falls. Don't get me wrong....they can certainly use any feedback they get towards the Note but by the time the S model is released and feedback validated, it's difficult to implement major changes.

It does have a really GOOD camera.

People are criticizing it... and some returning it because basically... (and even if you don't pay full amount due to trade, etc)... just saying... it's not a "great" camera for the $1400 premium.

You coming from a Note 10 or S10+ etc.?? It's just, right now, doesn't look not worth the premium.

It's a good camera. For $1400 you want a great camera. You want it to hit the top spot on DXO at least for a week. You're not getting a great camera for the premium and between the S20+ and the Ultra. That's basically it. That's really the main issue with the Ultra.

And the ultra does very good for all that

And i will Be here till i die lol, But what i said it's true.
Well respectfully, it's an opinion to which you're certainly entitled too. That distinction only makes it true for you or anyone who agrees with you. When it comes to opinions there's more than one truth.

We can dance all day long about which is better or worse or if it's worth the price. I traded in my S10+, still have my Note10+ and the biggest Ultra. I liked them all and they each serve a purpose. I've had the Ultra since the 3rd of month and just shipped off the S10+ with no regrets so at the end of the day it comes down to what makes you happy.

It just gets old, lol. This phone is amazing, fast. Comparing prices from note 10+ release date to these prices I would pay the extra $100 for the ultra 512.

The camera works great for what it is, a phone camera. It's not intended to be a professional camera.

I don't worry about price and that's not bragging. I'm just at the point of my life where I see something I want, I just buy it as long as within my means. I worked for it so for me value is just a perception based what tickles my fancy. I'm not about to start letting others make my buying decisions.

Some guy at work was just raving about the camera today, and sold his iPhone 11 for it.

So not everyone hates the camera.

Well said.

Exactly. While the prices are high for these phones, we have yet to see the prices for the rest of the 2020 flagships. If they also tip toe past a thousand dollars, will they get the same scrutiny as the S20?

Maybe, maybe not. But I suspect the REAL problem isn't the cameras. It's that flagships have finally moved beyond what the average consumer can afford. And what do humans do when they can't afford something they want? They pick it apart or latch onto a flaw to convince themselves it's not worth buying.

I'm not saying everyone does that. But I've seen an awful lot of that lately.

Everytime someone says 'but it's 1400.00, it needs to do this or that'.

No, it doesn't. Samsung offered a product. They charged what they felt the market could bear. Either you want it, or you don't. Just cause it doesn't suit your needs doesn't mean it's not worth it to someone else.

Samsung isn't forcing anyone pony up 1400.

Exactly. I look at it this way there are much more expensive habits I can have that are way more dangerous on the body and wallet lol.

Note surprised as that's the same reaction I would get with my note 10+. Was always an iPhone user complimenting the photo quality especially low light.

Believe what you want your opinion against my opinion, 1,400 for that phone isn't worth it plus a broken focus camera, i will leave it here, no use in saying the truth.

i mean it's not an opinion it's factual. take a look at any available spec sheet. you may have some implicit bias vs the s20 (my money would be on having to justify your current phone), but you can't argue facts. the s20 is measurably better than both phones you mentioned in literally every category. your argument carries no logical merit. you can SUBJECTIVELY say that the cameras are better on the note and s10, but OBJECTIVELY, you would be wrong. same goes for the screen. same for the memory, etc

This should give hope to people. If gcam can fix some problems then we know a software update can do the trick(at least for some of the issues).

I've been using the Pro mode when shooting indoors of people and keeping all the settings on auto. It seems the smoothing process is not as agressive than Photo mode. You just can't use the wide angle or tele lens in Pro mode. I don't use them much when taking pictures indoors of people anyway.

The over softening of facial features can easily be fixed over a software update. The autofocus can't because the S20 Ultra, unlike the other 2 S20 models for some weird and unknown reason, uses the inferior phase detect autofocus instead of the superior dual pixel autofocus. Which is a bit disappointing considering the S20 Ultra is being promoted as the camera bomb.

Reading all these comments about people who have just gotten the S20 Ultra, I'm looking forward to Samsung ironing out all these problems and improving the camera experience in the S21. And hopefully matching Huawei with 10x optical zoom as well.

Bro for real? Come on.. smoothing images is a Samsung look that they like. It's not going away. It sucks.

This may sound like a silly question but what are the auto settings that you put in pro mode?
