Discuss Task Managers/Killers Here!

I thought by using a task manager, it could save on battery life ?

Ive been using one on my EVO since yesterday with no issue...

Some say they can help, others say they don't. Being we've had the EVO for such a short time, I'd say give it a couple weeks before even trying one. Then if you decide to try one, you've got a baseline to see whether one would even have an effect or not. Otherwise, how could you even know if it is helping if you've never run the phone for a period of time without one?

Advanced Task Killer has an option to automatically kill apps at specified intervals, in case you don't want to babysit them.

I don't see an issue with use Task Managers. If anything essential is "killed", the phone will reboot at its worst. I think the benefits (better performance and battery life) far outweigh the risks.

But my point was to use the phone without one for a couple weeks before trying one to see if there is actually any improvement/impact. If you start using one from day one of getting a phone, how do you really know the impact?

Things that I have noticed running out of nowhere:

Facebook

YouTube

Stocks

MP3 Store

Music

Peep

Friend Stream

Calendar

Music

Messages

I have thought about these and assume they don't need to be *constantly* running. (yes no maybe?)

I think if you open task manager window you will see more apps - I have nascar, other sprint stuff

Yet on the same note, task killers are known to make the OS unstable. Let Android manage your memory.

You know what else makes the OS unstable? A dead battery because a bug in the Android system isn't properly shutting down the maps application and is allowing it to constantly draw power despite not actively doing anything.

I use Advance Task Killer an it quickly allows me to disable all of the things I don't have constant use for (Sprint TV, Nascar, Sprint Football). I don't have any stability problems.

Task Manager question

Sorry, Im new to Android....

Does our Evo 4g have a task manager built in? If not, can anyone recommend a good task manager that works well with the EVO?

Also is there any other way to know which apps are running?

Thanks in advance!!!

Any (Sprint) apps safe to KILL with adv. task manager?

I read in an article here on central that some apps with the carriers name or developers name in them should not be killed off. I noticed alot of my sprint apps, including sprint nav, are sometimes always running. I was wondering if it is safe to set the sprint apps for an auto kill or not? Also, what about the people app? What others are safe to kill off....

Definitely won't affect the phone at all. I did it, as most others have here, and the change in battery life is definitely noticeable.

Post your Auto-Killed Apps Here!!!

I know... I know... this has been discussed a bazillion times, but I wanted something more EVO specific (hence posting in this section of the forums) and something more fresh (hence posting it now).

Regardless what people (and Google) say, auto-killing useless apps have drastically increased my battery life with no impact on system stability. However, I feel like I might be disabling a feature that might be useful or forgetting to disable something that isn't. What better way than to get a huge database of apps people most commonly auto-kill and see where most of us agree on.

So go ahead and simply post a list of apps you have auto-killed by your favorite Task Manager. Feel free to mention which Task Manager you're using and why you're sticking with it, but keep it simple and to the point. A simple app list will do.

I'll start...

  • com.htc
  • fring
  • AppBrain Market Sync
  • Google Partnet Setup
  • HTC Message Uploader
  • MP3 Store
  • My Uploads
  • Stocks
  • Peep
  • Spring Navigation
  • Voice Dialer

If you see some apps that should not be auto-killed, please post your reasoning. Personally, I don't see what the big deal is as the OS seem to start them back up when necessary. Some widgets might not work, as I discovered, but the ones I use have been functioning without a hitch.

Thanks again guys!

*Moderators, please don't delete/move this thread. I would like to get an Excel database going with this data and I'll post it back here periodically.

How about using a google docs spreadsheet, then you can post a link to publicly view it?

dumb question, but if you killed the apps, does it still function?
example, if I killed gmail or handcent sms, does it still receive emails and sms?

I want to say no, but I'll leave that to someone who knows for sure.

haha, yes you do, you only close the gui application. you'll notice it auto starts each time you receive one.

even if you kill apps like GMAIL or SMS messaging, they will still work when a new message arrives. you will only notice things like an inbox notification missing from the status bar if one was in there previous to killing the app.

it is safe... did it on my Nexus and do it on the EVO...
