The root should be the same but the recovery image would be different as well as the roms wouldnt work.

Nope. The custom roms at just a great benefit to rooting your device. Feel free to root without a custom rom but definitely look into the benefits. Most of us find it well worth the trouble.

So I followed every step and when it got time to install the rom it said file corrupted. Now everything is gone and I have no idea what to do and my phone is back to factory.

Download the ROM again, put it on the SD card, (might need to download it on your computer, then copy it to the card), and try to flash again.

KSmith, any chance we could get MD5 hashes published for each ROM release?

Thanks for the reply. I ran it again to see if I screwed up but it's still aborting the installation because it says it's bad. I'm going to try your tip.

I followed these steps for my Optimus U and I'm now successfully rooted. Only temporary for to test it out

You have to be more specific. When you try to do WHICH step does it say "operation not permitted"?

Your contacts are synced with google, (as long as you've had sync on since you last changed any contacts). Go check out your gmail account, you'll see you have all your phone contacts there. If you wipe your phone so you can install ThundeROM, it will resync with google once you give it your gmail again.
