Discussion of the Fascinate root How-To

Thanks DroidXcon for supplying this excellent rooting guide. All the other guides I found online for rooting my wife's Fascinate made to many assumptions in terms of what the end user should know to do in the process. It wasn't until I found your detailed guide that I was able to make it work. Thanks for breaking the process down for the uneducated. :)

Root Successful. WOOT!

Thank you very much i worked hard on it and i have more improvements to make on it. Im glad it worked for you, which method worked for you?

Hello,

I am new to Android...and rooting...NO experience whatsoever, but dying to use tethering on my fascinate, but need to root it to enable the apps to work. I found this thread describing a how-to, but can't seem to find a link or actual directions...

Any advice? Are the directions staring me in the face? All I see are the responses and praise for the how-to instructions.

I used the one click script. I tried the same script using instructions from another source, however, as I mentioned, they made sweeping assumptions as to what I should know to do and not do. For instance, there was no reference to NOT mounting the SD card and no reference to turning off media sync during the process. In addition, they did not mention that I might need to unplug the USB cable and plug it back in for the PC (and script) to recognize the phone after the first reboot (and second for that matter.) For this reason it would always fail. Your instructions contained that vital information and I'm grateful for it. Thanks.

The Droid Incredible I'm comfortable with. I've replaced recovery, rooted, loaded several different ROMs. Not an issue. Deal is, the DInc is my phone. The Fascinate is my wife's. Thus my dilemma. Don't want to render my wife's phone unusable. Don't much care for the Dog House if you catch my drift. :)

Just a quick question,

I am currently rooting for the first time and before I begin I just wanted to make sure of something. I was following the one-click guide to root and began downloading the fascinateroot_v02 file from the mirror MegaUpload, when the download finished my antivirus (Kaspersky) notification poped up alerting me that it detected an "Exploit.Linux.lootor.g" and it denied it....now what I am wondering is if that is what is needed for the root process concidering the phone runs off linux, or if its a legitimate virus that it block....

I dont want to start the process with/without a certain file from the .zip package and mess something up... So anyhelp would be great!

Rooting in itself is like a trojan, you are using a linux exploit to get into the locked up part of the system , then you are gaining access. So yes your antivirus is working correctly,,,,the only thing is you are the one applying the trojan and gaining access.

i suggest you just disable the antivirus for this

To the computer my, then just open it and it will execute the install

Using the ADB method.
I'm up to the part where I type in "adb push su /sdcard/su" this is what my CMD looks like

#exit
exit
C:\fascinateroot_v02>adb push su /sdcard/su
failed to copy 'su' to '/sdcard/su': permission denied

Pull the battery out then reinsert it and start over

Bishopenlow, please keep discussions in this thread. Please be more descriptive, when are you seeing this error....does your phone normally connect without a problem...did you follow the steps in the preparation area?

Droidxcon,
New to rooting so I did one click. Everything worked great. Now If I want to try CWM recovery should I unroot first? Or what steps should be taken so I dont get in a mess. I have read your other post regarding this just didnt know if there were any associated problems going from one click root to a more tech advanced method. BTW, I am running DL09 on my fascinate.

Ok I've decided to take the plunge.....downloaded everything I need to as far as drivers and the fascinate root file. Set to debugging, plugged in phone. it says it is pushing the files to my phone.....been that way for over 10 min..... is it stuck?
an I screwed?

What method are you using? where exactly are you stuck? if you are using one click method, and are waiting after running rage, sometimes it takes up to half an hour give or take,,,,and you are just rooting if it doesnt work just pull your battery and start over

im having this same problem also...but without thinking i went ahead and continued rooting and entered the stuff below and it said superuser successfully installed so im not sure if im rooted. Once i restarted the phone i checked my apps and i have Superuser but when i installed titanium backup it says "sorry could not acquire root privilleges...". I then tried to root again using the ADB method and it says FAILED Superuser already installed. I made sure that my SD card is mounted and I have no idea what to do now can someone please help?

adb install Superuser.apk

It will now install the Superuser.apk this may take some time while it installs when it is over it will say:

Success-after you see Success hit Ctrl-C Then reset your device
