Discussion of the Fascinate root How-To

Ok - Since I wasted people's time with my last 2 posts in this thread, I went ahead and read every post in this thread, but I have a couple of questions before I start.

- What are the advantages to the 2 "upper" difficulty options for rooting?
- Is One Click a "permanent" root or does it kick back to unrooted status upon restart?
- Do all methods of rooting require connection to a computer or are there any options you can do completely from your phone?
- What is the status of my phone post rooting? (Do I lose all my apps / preferences / settings?)

My top 3 goals in rooting are the following (1 to 5 w/ top priority being 5):
- To gain a little bit of speed - 2.5
- Increase battery life - 4
- Move apps to my sd card instead of storing them on my phone - 4.5
- These are in addition to all the standard perks (remove bloatware, be able to run rooted apps, etc)

Knowing everything above, what options would you guys suggest? More information can be provided for a better tailored answer if necessary, and as always... You guys rock! Thanks in advance for help for a newbie.

yes it is permanent .....yes they require the computer

i would still suggest CWM+root method,,, this will give you flexibility of changing to custom roms and Kernels that will be faster and better on battery life

but really you would do just fine with either methods 1 or 2, one click or ADB method

you can debloat and you would see good results

Is there a list of Kernels and Roms for our phone or just too many to count? (I just get so overwhelmed with all the options - it's a lot to sift through with a wife, 2 girls, and a job)

What would I need to do to achieve a little faster device with a more extended battery life with option 1 or 2 (settings, apps, etc)?

Thanks again.

And I added one more question too - what state does doing option 1 revert to? Your apps / settings still there?

just putting a custom rom on there will automatically help with speed, and for battery life you can use a low volt kernel
if you look in the roms and hacks area we have alot of info on the stickys

none of the root options change anything on your phone accept give you super user options or give you clockwork recovery

Doesn't matter which ROM I would put on there, I would see increased speeds?

Let's say I am running a custom ROM and Kernel and have removed some of the bloatware (bing, blockbuster, etc), and a new update (say Froyo) comes out for our phone - what would the process be that I would go through?

Will any of these options allow me to move loaded apps from my phone to my sd card?

Thanks again for all you guys replies - just trying to wrap my head around the entire process.

if i flash to a new kernal, does it wipe how my homescreen and stuff is setup? does anyone know what the difference in specs are for stupidfast kernal 1.54 vs 1.76?

i am getting so pissed off ive been trying to root for 3 days now and i am getting to the point where i dont even want to root, but i finally got the driver so my comp recognizes my droid but now my zip driver wont unzip the root file. any advice, anything would be very helpful. thanx.

This may be just a mix up, but none of this stuff is for any of the "DROID" line up. This is all very specific to the samsung fascinate. Once you've got your computer recognizing the phone try the methods listed in DroidXcon's how to root post. Once you get the root it's all gravy. The main problem with the phone not showing up is bad samsung drivers. The good one's are posted all over heck and creation.

put your phone in debugging mode, and stay awake
plug your phone into the computer, while still plugged in shut the phone off, then restart it while its still plugged in . let me know if it connects

What would happen to a rooted phone after getting the update going around right now (to fix emergency calling). Titanium backup has bloat frozen to keep them from running...that's it.

so i dont know what is going on, i must be computer dumb or something and its a higher power telling me that im going to brick my phone, but i got the drivers from samsung.com and my comp will only recognize my phone in USB mount, and ive got the root.zip to open and even if i toggle back and forth in/out mount unmount i get:
'abd' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
then it tells me some troubleshooting tips which i do and re-do still the same thing.
so i think it is the drivers. so i uninstalled those ones and got new ones and they wont install, yes i have an unzip program. i dont know what else to do ive been troubleshooting for 3 days and im about ready to give up and be mainstream. if you have any suggestions please help.

Its a DL09 but , put the phone in debugging mode, plug it in, while still plugged in shut off the phone and turn it back on

nope no luck i swapped issues now, now i can get the root file to START_ROOT, but now my comp wont recognize my phone unless it is in mount, ive even tried to toggle back and forth between mount/unmount. ive tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalled, even from different sources, i dont know whats going on.
