So my family is switching from Verizon to another network, and a big part of our consideration is that GSM phones work internationally, specifically Hong Kong. Technically if we removed the SIM and put in one from a Hong Kong carrier, it could make calls and stuff, right? I'm just worried that the frequency bands or whatever might be different. Does it matter if I get it on contract or does I have to get the phones unlocked? Could anyone help me with this?

You can check specific phones international capabilities on their website, under shop and then international. Smart phones you should be good, and a lot of the feature/basic phones can be used abroad as well. Both kinds of phones can be unlocked to be used abroad, but you have to have been a T-Mobile customer for a certain amount of time. It's just a matter of calling into Care with the phone's IMEI.

Hope that helps!!
