Do the Pixels have a memory management issue? And if so, can't it just be fixed via update?

If you go that way , in my opinion get the Xr cheaper with the specs of the others

I was just out and they had XS on display, I’ve played with it a few times already but did again just comparing to iPhone 7+...I’m still more looking forward to the P3. XR display is the turnoff for me, I’d only go with XS. Plus I am looking forward to google integration (biggest thing I missed going to iOS, just isn’t the same), hepatic typing (love this, iPhone doesn’t do it even with swiftkey), fingerprint sensor and that camera.

I don’t think the ram situation if a dealbreaker for me but I have to try it first. And I expect it will get fixed, was hoping it would by now before getting mine.

Well I hope you like the pixel 3 and stay on board..Is the xr display which is lcd like your iPhone 7 that bad?

Honestly, been reading parts of this thread and although I’m super pumped to get my pixel this upcoming week...I’m also paranoid all I’ll be doing is judging it like a lot of others. I’m a pretty average user, maybe 2-3 hours a day SoT and don’t game at all...didn’t expect to get worried but all the conversations got me doubting coming back to android and shamefully bringing it back within 14 days for a XS.

You don't need to be worried. People here like to be dramatic and think the sky is falling if something doesn't operate exactly how they want it to.

When I compare it to oled display for sure. My 6P had an oled (I’m sure it did...) and coming to iPhone 7+ was a huge difference, screen is one of important features and gave it up going to iOS (to take a break from Android) as my wife is an Apple fan girl. I was very happy to see X/XS with oled displays but the honest truth after playing with them (my friends have X’s) I’m always ‘meh’. I love iOS it’s super solid and always works, but it’s way too similar to what I have and don’t like the design of X/XS(Face ID forced, notch forced, Siri still sucks).

So ya it’s got the screen but so does the pixel line. Oled is a big deal after using lcd for 2 years and being jealous when I see Samsung screens lol

Another thing I read today is that the Xr has better battery life over the XS Max and Pixel 3 XL. Not that I'd want to tip your opinion. I'm solid in the Pixel camp after using multiple phones and both IOS and Android.

Ya I saw a few reviews, it looks like a very good phone for someone who doesn’t mind having a lower quality screen but still not for me, even with the great battery life. I charge my phone on my commute every day anyway, battery life isn’t a dealbreaker for me as I’ve learned I’m a very average user. I wouldn’t mind having cool features like ambient display in exchange for a little less battery.

I had no issues with the 2 XL which also had 4gb of Ram. However, I recently had some big slow downs when doing certain tasks. One in particular was deleting music from Now Playing history. The phone started to slow down and even pause a few times. These types of issues happened maybe 3-4 times.

Restructuring that sentence,

"If you are only using 3.7 GB, given how low resource most tasks in this operating system are, having 8 gigs of overhead is more problematic than only having 4".

Another way of stating it: Assuming two devices are using a similar amount of resources...,

Again, unless I'm completely dense, this restructured formulation still assumes that the 8GB device will only use 3.7GB. I don't know why you make that assumption or impose that limitation.

...the one that does so with fewer resources is more efficient. Being more efficient translates to increases in performance (speed, smoothness), battery and stability.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. If using fewer resources means/requires apps to be killed and forced to reload that is the opposite of performance, speed and smoothness.

The answer to both is, "it doesn't".

The premise was that android devices aren't using a huge amount of RAM, even if they have a lot to use. 3.7 in the 8 comparison is an example, not a hard figure. It means to say that if there are two devices, both using 3.7 GB, then the one that only has 4 is doing its job better, is running more efficiently and will probably perform better. That's why the "assuming two devices are using a similar amount of resources" part exists.

Using fewer resources doesn't mean or require apps to be killed and forced to reload, and that also has nothing to do with the resource management that we were discussing. That's a separate issue, being caused by a software issue, nothing to do with hardware resources.

This version seem to have come out with more nagging issues than in the past it seems. I wonder if Google's beta testing sample is too small to find all the bugs before release.

As someone who has been using the 3XL in the day to day excessively I don't see it.

Is it the phone or Android 9 Pie? I personally think it's Pie. After beta testing on the 2XL things just weren't the same. Now on the 3 XL I think it could be better optimized.

Google seems to be going backwards with the pixel line.... the pixel 1's seemed pretty solid except for the ridiculously large bezels which seemed to serve no real purpose except to copy apple. The 2 XL had some major hardware issues. And now the 3 seems to be having a combo of hardware and software issues. Things that make you go hmmm....

I do think pie has some issues, but I'm running it on my original pixel with no problems whatsoever. In fact I think it's one of the best Android versions I've ever used. I am using the traditional 3 button navigation though, if I was forced to use gestures that might change my opinion a little ;-)

Yeah and Google haven't come out and said anything about the ram management. If they don't say anything in the next week or two, then I'm going to assume the aggressive management and constant app shutdowns are working as intended, which is insane as music apps are closing when the camera app is taking photos.

Haha, if you say Google copied Apple with the notch or gesture, I would agree, but copy Apple with bezels? I think that just bad design. This is the first time I ever hear someone says Google copied Apple on the large bezels.

I suppose the Ram and Processor itself are not quite as good as PC/Tablet/MAC ones at handling multiple applications. I mean, isn't that why only one or two tablets are just starting to use Phone Processors ?

The comparison doesn't make sense
