Docs from a Verizon focus group [unconfirmed]

I'm believing that this is not on Verizon with the lack of the mention of LTE, and no mention of Verizon. Also, at this point as far as my knowledge extends there's no way that this could be on Verizon because Verizon's 4G, LTE, requires the LTE chip, which would make it impossible to be the world's thinnest smartphone. I'd figure that it's for a company the uses a GSM standard, or Sprint.

Then again, if it is true then I don't know what to think.

I don't think this device is the bionic but.

One of the reasons they gave for the delay was moto creating their own silicone for the 4g lte.
I'm just sayin...

A focus group can be called together for vaporware as well...

I have done focus groups for projects that were pretty much in the dream stage that never came to fruition. Of course, it is easy to impress a focus group with info like these documents...

Take the best of all worlds in a device and slap them all together to create the true 'dream device'. Doesn't sound real...at least no time in the next few years.

If the BIONIC has all of that.....I'm definitely gonna need some clean underwear!

I also wonder about the references to it being just "4G" and it actually coming from VZW......seems like they really try to make it a point to always reference it as "4G LTE". But if these are just internal docs or something, maybe that explains the more "generic" reference to 4G...... IDK

That was my thought as well. Verizon has done a good job of marketing 4G to attempt to make people aware that LTE is not the same thing as HSPA+. Like you said maybe internally this isn't done as much.

Still, I wonder if (despite what the person sending it to Phil said) this was done at a phonemaker's behest or something along those lines and then associated with Verizon in some way. It just seems odd to me that LTE would not be mentioned once in the entire document.

Am I the only one who sees that it mentions a 35% increase in pixels over competitors? Which makes it a 720p display vs. QHD. If this is the SGSII then they modified it A LOT.

Actually a 720p vs qHD display is more than 35% different (44% according to my calculations). However, a qHD versus the "standard" 800x480 display is a 25% difference.

Very good question. I'm having a hard time believing it'd really be only a quarter-inch thick. That's 6.35mm. The Galaxy S II as it stands is 8.49mm. And adding LTE would make it thinner?

People aren't too accurate with measurements by eye. Thin looks like....and they throw a random number out. 1/2 was too thick and 1/4 inch fell closest probably.

Kevlar reinforced battery cover is pretty darn sweet if that turns out to be true. Ill use it as a vest.

Focus groups by the way are gathered for various reasons on product. This one sounds like they were asked to come up with the marketing ideas on how they would describe the product. A friend of mine is on qvc and sells haircare products. He asked me to do this very thing. There were 25 of us and they gave us product and asked us to comment and think about how we would describe the product and get people to buy it.

Also anything we may think are selling points i.e. smell, packaging etc etc.

This is what I think this focus group did for Verizon as well.

1280x720 = 921,600 pixels
(921,600 - 518,400)/518,400 = 0.778 or 77.8%

True story. I was never good at math. This means it's a qHD display. Which is still an upgrade from what the original SGSII has.

My calcs went the other way. (921,600 - 518,400) / 921,600 = 0.4375 or 44% (or the qHD is only 45% of a 720P display). Either way, the numbers don't add up to 35%. But using your method:

480x800 = 384000

(518400 - 384000) / 384000 = 0.35 or 35%.

So it looks like it's referring to a qHD display versus the standard 800x480 display.

Correct me if I'm worng, but doesn't qHD mean Quarter HD display? I recall reading that this is because the qHD display is a quarter of the pixel count of a true HD display, thus 77% sounds a little more accurate. Just my .02

Having worked in product development in the technology field and administered market research, I would like to weigh in and voice my opinion on this. The object of qualitative market reseach, such as focus groups, is to get reactions to help the company focus it's development and product cost towards features that resonates with people. The different features are mentioned and the reaction of the group members is recorded by people behind the mirror wall. So, when they say the phone is the most powerful one on the market, they will watch to see what the reaction is, etc. You often throw out "extreme" features just to see if that resonates with the group.

A samsung phone made out of something other than plastic??? get real But there is not a chance in hell that this is the Bionic, that is a pipe dream people. Not trying to rain on a parade but lets be realistic here. .25" thick and super amoled and we are still wondering if this is the Bionic??? c'mon now guys.

That is a Focus Group doc and, as noted previously in this thread, is most likely a "mash-up" of specs to get customer reaction to them and see which of these specs that "care about" most. This Focus Group could have been formed to determine a marketing strategy for one or more Verizon phones so that they will appeal to the widest audience.
