I've had this bug on every Android phone I've had (Droid Eris>Samsung Fascinate>HTC Thunderbolt). Supposedly the 2.3.4 version of Gingerbread should have the fix for the SMS bug (I'm not certain for sure, but when the Nexus S received the upgrade from Gingerbread 2.3.3 to 2.3.4, I had heard it mentioned). It's an annoying bug, that's for sure. :p

The fix that worked for me is:
Use go-sms, and
limit conversations to under 200 messages.
Neither worked on its own, but since I started doing both the problem seems to be gone.

I've been using go sms since having this happen to me. I haven't had it happen to me since using go sms. Try a third party sms app.
