DROID BIONIC Jelly Bean Update

The newer versions you can keep the app installed but it's safer (ha ha) to use the uninstall recovery feature inside safestrap if you need to flash anything. The FXZ and/or HoB will likely deal with it anyway but as a matter of best practice it's best to clean it up first.

Alright thanks I knew there was an issue with SS on earlier versions of the HoB that it had to be uninstalled. Better to be safe than sorry. Although there is a root exploit now it is not a 123 operation anymore.

The Ubuntu exploit method works flawlessly. I ran my Ubuntu within an Oracle VM Virtual box and installed/rooted without major issues. The only issues were assigning a static IP, as I have a rather large network here at the house. 10.0.0.1 was not a valid option. Once the static IP was assigned, DNS assigned, the process was flawless. If you decide to go this route, it's simple. No risk of installing dual booting system or losing any of your existing windows/mac configurations or settings. Kudo's to Dan for the exploit, we owe him so much. Kudo's to Sam for making a installer/package that allows us to do what we need to do and takes the noob factor out (for the most part, if you can read follow instructions).

For the record the only thing I did was help him fix the exploit by testing it. He'd fix, I'd retest, etc until we got it working. JohnlGalt will make a new integrated Linux image that has everything built into it when he gets time. Now THAT will be handy.

Im going to attempt to root my wife's phone. I'm wondering if the 32-bit Ubuntu install will still work even though my pc is a 64-bit? I know nothing about linux so I thought I would ask. Not sure if I can even pull this off, got instructions but looks very confusing.

Yes, use the 32 bit image (and make sure the 32 bit version gets installed. Some people chose 32 bit only to have the installer "decide" on 64 bit for them). It will save you a headache. And it's not too bad. Just follow the steps exactly and you should be good to go.

I get a error. Unable to boot. Please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU. I'm doing something wrong or maybe I have to use the 64-bit?

Did you dual boot? Windows / Linux? I didn't want to dual boot, considering that I run windows 8 64bit Pro.. headaches abound. I use Oracle VM VirtualBox, it's free and open source. Completely supports your systems existing hardware and pass through. You can install Ubuntu 32bit into the VM and run it without any issues. If you need assistance, I can help you setup and get it running as I have already used the method myself. As soon as the wife gets home, I will be rooting her phone with the Ubuntu (inside a VM) method.

Obviously I'm a ***** because I have a windows 8 64 bit machine as well but I couldn't get the usb flash to boot even though I set the bios to boot the flash drive first. Maybe I should just install it on my pc then instead of USB stick? Be easier?

It's not a 32 vs 64 bit thing. It's an architecture issue. I also run in a VM (VMWare WS 9) and have no issues. But I also use 64 bit and configure it to run 32 bit apps which is not always straightforward or easy. And without doing so, it WILL fail. Hence the 32 bit recommendation.

I used Oracle VM VirturalBox. It's free and open source. You'll also need a method to mount the ISO onto a virtual CD drive, UltraISO - Trial so that you can install the Ubuntu in the VM.

I tried to priv message you, but I don't see the message in my sent folder (here on the site).. let me know if you did or didn't get that.

I got your message, I can't get my system to dual boot. I got it installed on my USB stick but even though I got my system bios set to boot from the USB stick first, it won't for some reason, and goes back into Windows. If I can't figure it out, I will give you a call, just give me the best time to do so. I don't want to call when your in the middle of something. The phone has been unrooted a week now, so it can wait another time if need be.

Just call when you're ready.. I'm working on the wifes phone - the problematic one. For some reason her phone never works the same as mine :(

Working on my wife's phone too. She lost root after update because her phone was getting errors so she thought she could fxz back to 246 ICS after I warned her before the update that she can't do that. Women!!!!

Please post the output of run sh so I can take a look.

Will post output (and maybe output with "bash -x" so you can see more detail) from home later...

However, I'm thinking, after reading up some more, that perhaps I screwed myself by doing OTA update over rooted ICS (didn't have Voodoo etc.). Is there any hope for me, Sam? Certainly willing to factory reset or fxz or whatever to get to a state I can get root back.... is that even possible at this point? Other than no root, JB has my Bionic running better than it ever has so far... lots of weird lag issues are gone now.

If you go to DroidRZR.com, on the main page is info on the new bionic jb root exploit called Motoshare2, although its a pain to do, it will get your root back after a FXZ or lost root after update from not protecting root.

Whats bothering me currently, the /system/bin/sh: /storage/rfs0/pwn: not found error I'm getting. didn't happen on my phone, but is happening on the wifes phone. really annoying actually.

edit: I'm a total noob (tired) .. I didn't open the file sharing on the phone BEFORE run.sh .. sheesh.

I'd have replied sooner but I've been building the HoB 10.1...

That error means for SURE the phone is not connected to your server when the exploit is run. Check in Files again to make SURE it's connected to the samba share before running the exploit.

Yes, see what Mike is talking about. BUT, please flash the system.img from 98.72.22 FXZ BEFORE you try it to clean up any root remnants. That goes for anyone with "leftover root crap" in system.

Boot to AP Fastboot (Power off, hold volume down and press volume), connect to USB, then:

fastboot flash system system.img

Make sure it's the right system.img. fastboot is in the HoB utils dir if you need it.

Alternatively you can use the HoB 10.1 with the 98.72.22 FXZ and do a FXZ Keep Data (DO NOT try to root from the HoB if you're on JB)

Then use the Linux based exploit.

House of Bionic 10.1 is released. I've changed the Superuser installation to Koush's vs the old ChainDD. It's much better under JB than ChainDD. I've added new protect root and restore root functions.

Note: If you used HoB 9.8->10.0 to root, please uninstall Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and reinstall it.

Thanks Sam, will try as soon as I get home and let you know what happens.
