DROID BIONIC Jelly Bean Update

Check my signature. *READ EVERYTHING* before doing please. I get very grouchy when I have to answer questions that I took the time to answer in the HoB OP and/or FAQ. The general idea is very simple in your case...I personally for posterity's sake would do an FXZ Keep Data to clean things up and return your system partition to full stock. (Won't touch your apps....don't panic. :) Your data partition will remain). Once that's done there's an option in the utility menu to root. Make sure to get the latest Moto drivers installed and follow all directions. If you run into problems, read to see if it's answered, and hit me up either here, the HoB discussion thread, or in a PM and I'll fix you up. If you JUST want to root and nothing more, use razr's edge (search for it or PM me and I'll send you my private link to it).
.

Sam, thanks so much for your offer to help. As you might surmise from my delayed reply, I'm quite busy this weekend (with grandpa duties!), so I may not have time to try this before the update hits. And I certainly don't want to rush the process. So, it looks like I might be stuck with stock JB. :(

Good luck to us all tomorrow!

Sam, you have any info as to why Dan up and quit?

Also let's say our jb release is buggy as all hell. Would they not patch it BC were near/at our EOL date

Fortunately I was able to interpret these feelings correctly: loss of essence.

He explained it quite thoroughly. Bugs for root are becoming harder and harder to find. They patch them every time he finds one. It's taking more and more time to find them and soon there'll be a zero sum game where there just won't be any bugs to exploit. He says if you want root, get an unlockable phone. I agree.

We will not see anything beyond this last patch unless a VERY serious security hole comes out. Even then it's unlikely.

What do you think tomorrow is, exactly? The day you get JB? Cause, it MIGHT be but there's a good chance it won't be.

Emails went out about the soak. They say it's starting early tomorrow. So, if that's true, but the OTA is also starting tomorrow, then it will be a very very short soak test. Through the comments written on the dedicated forum for the soak, I can feel the frustration and possible tension in the air. Especially a comment that he made that went something like, "Leave your issues with Motorola, Google, and your carrier at the door," and, "Saying things like 'I can't believe this made it through quality control' won't help any." We'll see how it goes. I'm still back and forth about whether I want to take the OTA right away or not. It's killing me.

Did anyone else just get a 2nd email?

My hope and prayer is that .22 was exactly like .23, just with ISIS. With ISIS out of the picture, then .22 should be .23. Doesn't hurt to be optimistic...

Would anyone care to hazard a guess as to whether SafeStrap will install on 4.1.2 if I take the OTA and maintain root with Voodoo? I'm inclined to give it a try if there's a decent chance that it'll work. I lived without root on my Bionic for a very long time, so it won't kill me if I can't get back.

That only partially answers my question. :) If you EVER want root again was the question. If you FXZ with JB, I can't guarantee you'll ever be able to get it back. If you take the OTA without being rooted and protecting root, I can't guarantee you'll ever get it back, either. People are so used to just being able to root when they want on Bionic but Dan R quit and we don't know yet if any of the existing exploits will work. If they don't, we won't have root. You could say "big deal, SOMEONE ALWAYS finds a root exploit"....yea, that's nice and bold, but, not true. Anyway, so before you take JB at all, either FXZ or OTA, you have to decide if you ever want root back. And if you do, root now, protect it with Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper, and then take the OTA. And NEVER FXZ or you'll permanently lose it.

Right after I get root and install Voodoo, the soak emails come out. So, is it worthwhile to temp unroot, or just leave it rooted?

I can verify soak test to start sometime on Monday, April 15th. Received email that said soak will be a short one and that release
will be soon after (if no major kinks are found). I'll not comment further until soak is finished per instructions, but will say this: FINALLY!!!!

Someone needs to keep root (I only need one) and when the update comes use OTA Grabber from the market and grab the zip for me. Host it on a dropbox or someplace and PM me a link. :) Would be MOST appreciated. You can temp unroot to install the update after you grab it with OTA Grabber.

P.S. Don't think that the soak means ANYTHING about whether this gets released to the general public or not. The "if no kinks are..." comment is hilarious. :)

So fun to see a planted seed germinate:sly:
